Oakwood Bowmen NFAS open shoot Sunday 7th April 2019 Many thanks to all our members and guests for attending. The weather was very mild and the sunshine eventually appeared in the afternoon. Richard Narey and his team laid a brand new course with some interesting and challenging shots and the new seating area seemed to work out well. A minute’s silence was held for our dear fellow archer Alfie Allen and a collection of £80 will be handed to his wife, Ruth, who is raising money for the \"Big C \" charity. We would like to say a special thanks to Garry Fisk and Debbie Huggins for their hard work in the catering hut, what a great team!! It was good to see Del Newman again and he sure was on top form, we did miss you and the banter Del. To all those who work behind the scenes every month making Oakwood the club it is, well done Team, Oakwood rocks!!! Well done to all winners. Mel Horne P.S. Thanks for the Birthday cake & wishes X ~ Massive thanks go to the lovely Theresa Hearne for sharing her photographs of the day!! ~ Hels :-) 102

Castle Bowmen 12 May 2019 th ~ Report & results by Owen Sankey ~ The first page has turned in the new chapter of Castle’s history. A new committee, a new shoot ground and a rejuvenated drive to create a fantastically enjoyable shoot. 6 months on from our departure of Ostlers plantation, we have finally held our first open shoot at our new premises, Castledyke. We have always strived to have natural looking targets and now with the advantages of having wild woodland, we were able to achieve a higher level of accuracy than ever before with multiple window shots and targets disguised with the ever growing cow parsley (honestly, I think it grew by half a foot overnight). Of course it wasn’t all straight forward, much of Saturday morning was spent configuring a flying fish, a seven-foot tall wolf and a target semi-submerged in a water jump, but we feel it was well received... I quote from an attendee:- “Probably the best looking predator and prey shot ever”. All in all, we had a huge amount of positive feedback from the course which is very much appreciated, all of us at Castle would like to thank every single archer for coming along and supporting us and look forward to hopefully seeing you all again in July! This time we’ll have bacon baps :-) 116

Hels/Field Archery News UK recently met with Mike Loades from his Californian home for an exclusive interview about his new book - “War bows” - and his life’s work. Here is a preview of what’s to come in the next issue of FAN UK Magazine... Mike Loades’ new book, \"War Bows\", is an encapsulating read; looking at some of the most deadly and technological advance bows across the ages. Covering bows from Europe, the Middle East and Asia, it shows detailed construction, materials and developments; the focus ranges from the mighty English Longbow, crossbows and Scythian composite bows to the Japanese Yumi bow. The book also shows the different types of arrows, uses and their construction. Each chapter also depicts the battles they were used in - from Crecy to the Battle of Kawanakajima - shown in fascinating historic illustrations. Throughout, detailed research also shows types of dress and armour giving detailed accounts to their historic and ceremonial uses. Mike’s love for horses shines through with a detailed look at \"the horse archer\" and how important these skilled archers were to the battlefield and military warfare. Mike is a true toxophilite and this book is a must for all who not only have a love for the heritage of bows, but who also have a passion for the history. 132
