North Carolina Community Colleges As part of the admission process to the fifty-eight community colleges in North Carolina, a student’s readiness for college-level math course(s) will be reviewed. The NC community colleges focus on accurate placement using a student’s unweighted high school grade-point average, or GPA, as long as it is from a United States high school. The colleges do not require the ACT or SAT for admission, but these can be considered as part of a student’s placement process. Currently, community college placement policies across the state vary slightly, so it’s best to check the website of your local community college, compare your high school GPA to their math placement requirements, and contact them if you have any questions. You’ll want to do this well in advance of the semester you plan to enroll at the college. Fall of your senior year is a great time to check. Also, it is very important to enroll in a math course during your senior year of high school to keep math skills sharp. Appalachian State University Entering students’ SAT or ACT math score will be used for placement into college-level mathematics at ASU. A student scoring less than 550 on the SAT or less than 22 on the ACT may take the “Math Placement Test”. A student who does not pass the math placement test may take MAT 1010 if no other math is required of their program or the student must take MAT 1001 a 4-hour course that provides 2 hours of math elective credits. A student must place into college-level math or successfully complete MAT 1001 in order to take introductory courses in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, General Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physics/Astronomy, and in other fields (any course with an ND designator). Transfer students without SAT or ACT scores will be required to take the “Math Placement Test” if they would like to take any math with a course number higher than 1010. Students wanting to take calculus are encouraged to take a college-level precalculus course (MAT 1025) before calculus. Students who have taken a rigorous high school-level precalculus course and who have an SAT of 550 or higher or an ACT of 22 or higher may attempt the “Calculus Readiness Test” in order to place into calculus. If a student’s SAT I math score is 540 or above (before March 2016), OR the SAT I math score is 570 or above (after March 2016), OR if the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test score is 400 or above, OR if the ACT math score is 23 or above, this will allow a student to enroll in 1065 (College Algebra), 2127 (Basic Concepts of Mathematics I), or 2283 (Statistics for Business), all of which count toward the general education mathematics requirement. It is very important that students take a mathematics course during their senior year of high school so that skills are retained.
