Installing charging facilities could 4 be a challenge for some, and a significant investment. The charging of electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles on campsites has become a hot topic on social media recently. Some campsites allow electric cars to be plugged into a mains socket in the caravan for charging, while others don’t allow it at all. Some charge extra for charging electric vehicles, while others don’t. Some people feel that if you’re paying for an electric hook-up, it shouldn’t matter how much power you consume; others think that they are subsidising the people who are charging their electric or plug-in hybrid cars. I’ve seen some very angry comments about these issues. In August 2021, the UK’s Caravan and Motorhome Club undertook a ‘Little Green Tour’ to establish the towing credentials of pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars in real- world touring with a caravan. All the lights will be 12V – three down the middle of the bus operated by a switch at the entrance, a light in the WC/washroom, four spots with individual switches at the back above the seating/bed, and lights above each side of the kitchen.

The stripped bus ceiling has cross members and some long thin strips of steel – except at the back. Here I had to glue blocks onto the part above the doors, adding a few longitudi- nal strips of wood. The ceiling is quite long and wide so the plywood (I chose 4mm okoume/ aucoumea – a type of mahogany) would have joints. I wanted the joints to fall on a cross member, so it was a mathematical puzzle to make a pattern that had as few visible joints as possible. At the rear I managed a length of 2350mm but had to add 130mm wide strips along the width. These two joints will mostly be within the eventual top cupboards, but the entrance and inside the washroom will have no overhead cupboards so here I cut and fitted two pieces across ways – both 1490mm long – the first being 980mm wide and second piece 735mm. RV PROFILES NZMCA Motorhome Show ACM PLATINUM STARTING $297,000 ACM is a luxury motorhome builder based in Auckland, and there is always a lot to drool over in these motorhomes. In this model the sleekness of the ceiling line was so fine that hardly any of the people looking at it realised there was an electric drop-down bed hidden up there. The other feature you have got to love in these big models is the length of the beautiful Corian one-piece bench top. ARVEE – AMPHIBIOUS 10 12 RECREATIONAL VEHICLE 11 14 The last thing you would consider as being an RV is a boat, but if you think about it the only difference really is that one D&G OUTDOORS JB CARAVANS vehicle is made to travel on roads, the other on the water – AND CUB CAMPERS cooking, sleeping, water and toilet facilities, batteries and power are needed on both. RV PROFILES NZMCA Motorhome Show 17 18 JAYCO OPTIMUM FROM $213,000 2023 MODELS We saw the Jayco Optimum motorhome and Silverline caravan over the weekend; again attracting big interest from visitors. The Optimum is a big vehicle on the FIAT cab chassis. This one has the double slide-out with the dinette seating and bed set up in it. Plenty to love in the kitchen with the big Thetford 3-way auto 171L fridge/freezer unit, combo oven with grill and four-burner gas hob on top. Soft-close drawers, pantry units, storage galore below and above, including a microwave and more cupboards. Heating- and water-wise the Autoterm 2kW diesel heater is great for this country, a Nautilus hot water system, plus 125L fresh and grey water fitted tanks. Power-wise this model has 180W solar panel with 125Ah lithium battery setup as standard, a Projecta battery management system with a tablet control pad. The dinette is an L-shape with adjustable table. The bedroom space sits beside it separated by wardrobe and cupboard storage. The bed is a queen size with inner-sprung mattress with comfy pillow top, orthopaedic slats, and lifts up to access more storage space. Both the dinette seats and bed frame are lightweight aluminium frames. The bathroom runs full width across the rear of the vehicle, big full-size shower box to the right, ceramic swivel 12V electric flush toilet to the left, vanity unit offers brilliant storage options underneath, with a washing machine tucked into the corner – these are common in Aussie-built RVs, more so than any other brand in the world from what I have seen over the years. 19 20 90 Vol 17 July-Aug 2022

Pelmets over the windows are great the other and one in the rear. This is a big heavy unit that you won’t be towing for added insulation around anytime soon, more of a get delivered and set up to live in on-site. 26. Main entry steps take you into the main living space, nice TV setup, storage there as well All models are fully New Zealand compliant, with the 230V wiring fitted at manufacture, as is the 12V compressor fridge/freezer unit. The 230V sockets are fitted here in New Zealand, as are the Thetford oven, cooktop and microwave. Each unit has a New Zealand electric WoF and appliances correct for New Zealand LPG use, so all the boxes are ticked. Another difference at the point of manufacture is the chassis: powder-coated steel chassis is normal for the US, but Ken has the New Zealand-bound models fully galvanised for our conditions. Other differences in these models include the substantial four steps that slide out and sit on feet, then with the aid of gas struts easily lift up to slide away again, and the fact that half these models have two habitation entry doors like the ones shown here; there are also often two separate electric awnings over these entrance spaces. 22 23 24 25 26

Electrically a 20-amp charge controller works with the 190W solar panels Four-wheel electric braking systems, external hot and cold shower, exterior power point and TV point, mains water connection, twin 9kg gas bottles, habitation doors with insect screens, and stabiliser jacks are other common features.
