Why should I join Journey Through Our Heritage? Pride JTOH provides a platform to exploreand know your individual cultural her-itage while instilling pride in the lega-cy you will carry with you throughout your life. PurposeThrough effective and impactful con-nections and relationships, JTOH pro-vides the ability to work within cultur-ally diverse communities while build-ing character, tolerance and under- standing. Power JTOH provides the ability to practice effective and active leadershipthrough community events, organiza-tion and field experience. This real-lifeapplication will help you be success- ful as the driving force of change in our ever-changing world.

Welcome!(Kitlapalojua)Journey Through Our Heritage (JTOH) is a pro-gram designed to create an awareness of cultureand a sense of community. Using curriculum thatinstills confidence, compassion and understand-ing for all people, we hope to encourage our stu-dents to become leaders. Through analyticalthinking and creative problem solving we en-deavor to develop role models that have a posi-tive impact on the future.Journey Through Our Heritage teams choose afocus area each year that aligns with programgoals. Journey Through Our Heritage teams thencompete in events that help them explore andexpress that theme.The Journey Year at a Glance:Welcome Back Ceremony in late fall.This event brings our schools, their families, andour community together to learn about what ourfocus will be for the year. This event allows every-one the chance to celebrate a new start and meetnew people.Cultural Expressions in early Dec. Teams devel-op a core curriculum that utilizes video, teatro,spoken word and music to compete against eachother.In spring the JTOH teams create a student-driven anthology of prose, poetry and originalart.

The Highlight of the JTOH year the Tlatchli Games This fun-filled odyssey of the mindallows students to utilize their knowledge of theJTOH curriculum in games and activities thatdevelop memorization, study skills and strategiesnecessary for academic success. The JTOH program concludes with the annual Mauricio Saravia Awards Ceremony Trophies awarded for: Cultural Expressions, Mural Design Service Learning, Tlatchli Games and Literary Achievement Service Learning ( Due March 30th , 2018)The JTOH students participates with numerouscommunity organizations including : Colorado FolkArts Council (CFAC), Chicana/o Arts andHumanities Council (CHAC), Sisters of Color Unitedfor Education (SOCUE), Pirate Art Gallery andmany other partnerships. Each team has the optionof choosing their own service learning project. EachTeam will be given points based on the concept,design and written synopsis of their project. Theteams with the highest points will be awarded atrophy for their efforts and a gift certificate for theirschools.

Our Mission:Journey Through Our Heritage strives to promoteself empowerment, develops leaders and engagesstudents with their community. All students gain confidence by knowing their individual cultural and historical birth rights. Through rigorous academic study, service learning, STEM projectscreative problem solving and healthy competition, we hope to instill a sense of pride for students in their past as well as their future.Our Goals1. To implement indigenous values, traditions, and practices that build character. Encourage rigorous interdisciplinary competition de- signed to challenge and inspire young minds.2. To create a formal connection between MSU Denver students with GED/high school stu- dents state wide.3. To collaborate and work with community in building relationships with program administrators, community organizations, schools and potential partners who desire to participate in the program.4. To embrace and promote diversity by broadening participating teacher’s ability to teach a more culturally inclusive curriculum, facilitate the infusion of cultural and historical contributions of Latinos and other ethnicities and provide avenues for the success of all.
