It is intended to serve as a guide of what the structure and regulations are, its contents  may vary without notice. School Philosophy Juniper School´s students, parents, faculty and staff are a Catholic community of faith, a family of believers who work, learn, grow, play, and pray together to better love and serve God and further His Kingdom on Earth. Dominican Blessing May God Creator bless you May God Redeemer heal you May God the Holy Spirit fill you with light.

H Sister Maria Pia Backes I S Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose 125 Years of Service in T Germany, Mexico and the United States The Dominican story O begins almost 800 years ago with Dominic de Guzman, born in R 1170 in Caleruega, Spain. Filled with a deep spirit of prayer and Y a passion for preaching. Dominic gave birth to a new religious order: the Order of Preachers. (OP) Dominic's wisdom and vision enabled him to integrate the best of the contemplative and apostolic life. He called his followers to be rooted in and shaped by the Word of God through personal and liturgical prayer, assiduous study, and life shared in community. He gifted the Church with contemplative women and men passionately committed to proclaiming the truth of Jesus wherever they found themselves. Our Mission San Jose Dominican story begins more than 110 years ago. Three young Dominican Sisters were sent in 1876 from Brooklyn, New York, to San Francisco, California, to begin a school for German-speaking immigrants. Sister Maria Pia Backes, the superior, was 24 years old. Her companions were Sister Salesia Fichtner (21) and Sister Amanda Bednartz (17). By the time of her death, 48 years later, Mother Pia had firmly established the new Congregation of the Queen of the Holy Rosary: the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. Her devotion to the Gospel, her love for the liturgy, and her desire to bring Catholic education to youth, especially to the poor, shaped the spirit of this new family.

H Today around 350 Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose live the I rich tradition of the Dominican family with vitality, S enthusiastically responding to the challenge of Christian T education in California, Oregon, Arizona, Mexico, and Germany. O The vision of Mother Pia continues. R The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose are religious women Y energized by the love of our Lord, God, committed to building communities of faith in a variety of educational ministries, women who love deeply and serve generously... women who make a difference.

H Sister Ellen Kelly OP I S Juniper school was founded in 1960 by the Passionist Priests who T saw the need that existed at that time to educate the children O of American families who resided temporarily in Mexico and had R no command of the Spanish language. Y The Benedictine Sisters directed the school from the time of its foundation until the year 1968 when the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, California, assumed its administration. The first Dominican Sister sent to Mexico to administer the school was Sister Ellen Kelly, Sister Dolores Marie Diaz accompanied her as a teacher in the English program. She was followed by Sister Imelda Marie Dibble, then by Sister Rose Martin and by Sister Carol Prutsos. In its beginnings, the school population was comprised of mostly Americans. Due to the changes that have taken place in Mexico, the school community has been shifting gradually so that at the present time the school´s population is mostly made up of Mexican families having as a priority to give their children a high quality education, in a Catholic environment of peace and Christian love.

H In 1968 Juniper had  nine groups of pupils from Pre-Primary to I Eighth Grade. S In 1970 a new building was added that consists of four T classrooms, an assembly room, a library, a faculty room and a O science/art room. This new building allowed us to expand two R groups per grade giving us the opportunity to reduce the Y number of students per class. In 1980, the Seventh and Eighth grade were phased out because of low enrollments.  In the same year a Kindergarten building was constructed to offer a Pre-school education. In 1985 a third floor was added to the “new building” and the original building was extended toward Bondojito Street. In 1994 under Sister Ellen´s leadership a Financial Committee was formed in order to fund the construction of a 2-level multi-purpose building in the 5 and 6 year old play area. In 1995 the Kindergarten added a Pre-Kinder  level for 3 year olds. In October 1996 the  Margaret E. Kelly Auditorium was inaugurated. This building has on the lower level a Music classroom, a chapel, 2 extra classrooms and bathrooms. On the upper floor, at school patio level  are the kitchen, stage and multifunctional auditorium. Kindergarten grades Pre– Kinder, Kinder and Pre-Primary get their incorporation  to the Secretaría de Educación Pública for first time in the 2004-2005 school term. In 2005 Juniper`s Library gets renovated. In 2013 the school begins a major transformation of its buildings and grounds. The Kinder and Big School are completely modified and an underground parking lot is added.

By the end of the ten years, the students will have the basis to continue their studies either in Mexico or in the United States. Our main goal is to give our students a Catholic education, not only in theory, but in practice.
