THALES OF MILETUS

The eclipse In 585 b.C., the first solar eclipse was seen in the Middle East. King Medo was trying to invade the kingdom of Lydia, but the battle was interrupted when they saw the solar eclipse. Thales of Miletus, who was part of the army of Lydia, predicted the exact date “when the day would turn into night”.  The eclipse had a duration of 3 minutes and 24 seconds, and, because it was close to the summer solstice and they were up north, it was majestic.

e of thales The method that Thales used is a mystery but some people think that he used babilonian’s clay tablets, where other eclipses were mentioned. Other people think that Thales was wrong and that he predicted a moon eclipse in the sunset of the 4th of July, 587 b.C.  Predicting a solar eclipse is much more difficult than predicting a moon eclipse because, while the former only happens in a tiny part of the world and for a very small amount of time, the moon eclipse is longer and is also seen in all the areas of the Earth that are at night. Either way, Thales predicted an eclipse and this was an event that changed history.

THALES OF MILETUS BIOGRAPHY Thales of Miletus was a Greek philosopher, geometer, mathematician, physicist and legislator. He lived and died in Miletus (from 624 BC to 546 BC), currently Turkish territory. He was the initiator of the famous Miletus school. From the 5th century BC, Thales made numerous important contributions to the field of philosophy, mathematics, astronomy and physics. Thales is often considered a pioneer of Greek and Western scientific and philosophical speculation and one of the Seven Sages of Greece, although his figure and contributions are surrounded by great uncertainties. Thales began to use deductive thinking applied to geometry, and he is credited with creating two geometric theorems that bear his name. Mario,Sebas 1ºBach A He was the son of Euxamias and Cleobulinas, both from Phenicia. Since the Ionian (inhabitants of Phenicia) frequently traded with Egypt and Babylon, Thales was likely to visit Egypt at some stage of his life. It is thought that he might have received teachings from the priests, who had deep astronomical and meteorological knowledge. It is also thought that he could have acquired mathematical knowledge which the Egyptians had developed. There are three lines of thought about his writings: the first one says that he only wrote Nautical Astrology; the second, that he only wrote about the solstice and about the equinox; and the last one, that he didn’t write any works, since currently there is no writing or proof of his writing.

THALES OF HE WAS THE FIRST TO ACCLAIM THE ULTIMATE NATURE OF THE WORLD, CONCEIVED ON THE BASIS OF A FIRST AND LAST ELEMENT: WATER. FOR THALES OF MILETUS, WATER WAS THE FIRST ELEMENT OF ALL THE THINGS THAT EXIST, WHICH BEGAN THE UNIVERSE. THIS IS AN IDEA THAT THE GREEKS CALLED ARJÉ (FROM THE GREEK ἈΡΧΉ, SOURCE, PRINCIPLE OR ORIGIN). WITH THIS IDEA HE CREATED, PERHAPS, THE FIRST WESTERN THEORY ABOUT THE PHYSICAL WORLD. THALES ARGUED THAT THE LAND ON WHICH WE STEP IS A KIND OF ISLAND THAT \"FLOATS\" ON WATER IN A SIMILAR MANNER TO A LOG. THEREFORE, ACCORDING TO HIS THEORY, THE EARTH SOMETIMES TREMBLES BECAUSE IT IS NOT SUPPORTED ON A FIXED BASIS: THE WATER IT IS FLOATING ON MAKES IT WOBBLE. WRITINGS OF TALES THEORIES HAVE NOT TRANSCENDED, BUT PHILOSOPHERS SUCH AS ARISTOTLE OR SENECA WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROMULGATING HIS THEORIES. VV“THALES THOUGHT BEGINING OF EVERY

F MILETUS THE TESTIMONIES INFORM US OF TWO WORKS ATTRIBUTED TO THALES (ONE CALLED NAUTICAL ASTROLOGY, AND ANOTHER ON SOLSTICES AND EQUINOXES). HOWEVER, THE TESTIMONIES THEMSELVES GIVE LITTLE VALUE TO THIS INFORMATION. WHAT DOES SEEM TRUE IS THAT THALES VISITED EGYPT, ACCORDING TO THE TESTIMONY OF JOSEPHO AND AECIO, WHO ALSO ATTRIBUTE TO HIM A THEORY ABOUT THE FLOODS OF THE NILE. PLINY AND PLUTARCH, WHO REPORT THAT THALES DISCOVERED HOW TO KNOW THE HEIGHT OF THE PYRAMIDS, REINFORCE THIS HYPOTHESIS. AÑADIR UN POCO DE TTRADITION CONSIDERS THALES TO BE ONE OF THE SEVEN WISE MEN (ALONG WITH BIAS, SOLON, QUILÓN, PÍTACO, CLEÓBULO AND PERIANDRO), WITH THE ATTRIBUTES OF THE DISTRACTED SAGE WHO FALLS INTO A WELL TO GO OBSERVING THE STARS OR EXTO THAT THE WATER WAS THE YTHING”

T H A L E ’ S Q U O T E S THALES, DURING HIS LIFE, POSTULATED MANY PHILOSOPHICAL SENTENCES THAT, TOGETHER WITH HIS OTHER EXPLOITS IN THE FIELD OF SCIENCE, HAVE MADE HIM AN IMMORTAL PHILOSOPHER AND MATHEMATICIAN. HIS KNOWLEDGE IS STILL IN USE IN OUR DAILY LIVES. ✦THE SUPREME PLEASURE IS TO GET WHAT YOU CRAVE. ACHIEVING OUR GOALS MAKES US FEEL FULFILLED. ✦EVERYTHING IS LIVELY AND EVERYTHING IS FULL OF GODS. HERE HE SHOWS HIS PHILOSOPHICAL ANIMISM. ✦MANY WORDS NEVER INDICATE WISDOM. TRUE SAGES RARELY SPEAK TOO MUCH. ✦CHOOSE ONLY ONE GOOD THING. A SUMMARY ABOUT HIS MONISTIC ETHICS. .✦ L E T YOUR ORACLE BE MODERATION. BALANCE IS ALWAYS THE BEST GUIDE. ✦THE PAST IS TRUE, THE DARK FUTURE. A REASONABLE VIEW ON TEMPORALITY. ✦TAKE FOR YOURSELF THE ADVICE YOU GIVE TO ANOTHER. IT IS EASY TO DISTRIBUTE ADVICE EVERYWHERE; THE COMPLICATED THING IS TO APPLY IT TO OUR OWN LIFE. ✦THE BIGGEST THING IS SPACE, BECAUSE IT CONTAINS EVERYTHING. IT MAY NOT BE INFINITE, BUT IT DOES CONTAIN EVERYTHING THAT CAN BE CONTAINED.

Interesting Facts Thales was the first philosopher in the Western tradition, and as such, there are certain curious facts related to his life and work: Even though he was the first philosopher and one of the most famous mathematicians and physicists in history, we do not have proof of any document which he may have written. Some people think that he could have written the “Nautic Astrology” but no one has proved it. This mathematician specialized in Geometry was the one who developed five different theorems.  As he lived in Ancient Greece he didn’t have any instrument for the observation of space, but he didn’t need it to predict a solar eclipse with only his knowledge. Thales also said that space is the greatest thing and that it’s composed of all the universal which exist. After this, Thales noticed  that he was interested in the study of the stars. He was obsessed about knowing the function of every element in the Universe. Thales came from a privileged family and he became very  famous because of his important discoveries. about Thales
