• SCOPE Instrumentation Engineering is a major part of engineering course that mainly concentrates on the concept and function of measuring equipment that are utilized in various fields such as designing, layout of robotic systems in electrical, domains and Instrumentation. Through Instrumentation Engineering students learn to add sensors to the systems which have recorders, transmitters, displays or control systems. The course curriculum of Instrumentation Engineering includes the teaching of how to design, make, test, monitor and maintain instruments. The main work of an instrumentation engineer includes how to design, make, test, monitor and maintain instruments. Instrumenta- tion Engineers are also required and work in various sectors such as power, water, solar etc. They are responsible for design installation or signal conditioning of an instrument. They assure the standard quality of an Instrument and are upgraded than before and working on them Some areas for an instrumentation and control engineer can work on are designing and developing new control sys- tems, testing, maintaining and modifying existing systems, analysing data and presenting findings in written reports, managing operations, working collaboratively with design engineers, operation engineers, purchasers and other in- ternal staff, liaising with clients, suppliers, contractors and relevant authorities, project management within cost and time constrained environments, understanding and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and quality standards, providing advice and consultancy support, purchasing equipment, writing computer software and test procedures, developing new business proposals. • PLACEMENT OFFERS 5
• WORDS FROM ALUMNII graduated from the Instrumentation and Control department in 2003. When I was working as a C&I Engi- neer at NTPC Limited, I realized the importance of the practical engineering knowledge gained during my NSS days, and the specific curriculum in I&C department which was tailored to cater the needs of process “industries. What I liked the most in the curriculum was the good mix of theoretical subjects such as control engineering and practice-oriented subjects such as power plant engineering. I also realized the importance of the engineering management concepts that I learned and the other work related trainings that I received from the placement and training bureau at the college. I realized the importance of theoretical engineering knowledge that I learned from the college, when I was doing my Ph.D at the National University of Singa- pore (NUS), and also during my postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The critical thinking and problem solving skills I acquired from learning subjects such as control engineering, microprocessor systems, and engineering mechanics is also vital in my current role as an Imaging Scientist. I consider myself lucky and privileged to attend the classes of my experienced teachers in the department, and to be an alumnus of this college which helped me to build a solid theoretical foundation for fundamental research, as well as the specific skills needed to excel in the industrial arena. Pramod Pisharody Senior Research Associate, CZI Imaging Scientist University of Minnesota Instrumentation and Control Engineering is one of the unique branches in the field of engineering which gives exposure to Electrical ; Electronics and Control system engineering in addition to the main stream “in- strumentation”. I&C branch gives wide opportunities for the engineers to work in the field of Oil and Gas ; “PowerSector andAutomation environments. By hiring good instrumentation engineers , the companies are ensuring the safer and reliable operation of the equipment’s or units concerned. In my experience, instru- mentation engineers have got good logical thinking which helps them to lead the investigation and also for the effective troubleshooting of the issues thereby applying the required mitigations, accordingly instrumen- tation engineers form the part of the highly recognized engineering group in such industries. “ Muhammad Famis Batch Analyzer, Engineering Specialist Saudi Aramco Mobil Refinery, Yanbu; Saudi Arabia Departement of Instrumentation and Control Engineering, NSS College of Engineering Palakkad 6
