Chapter 1Congratulations on Your New Puppy... Now What?Congratulations on making the choice to adopt or purchase a furry friend. Not only will they be acompanion, but studies indicate they will help enrich the quality of your life as well, in more waysthan you can imagine. In this guide, we will cover the basics of getting to know your new friend, what it changes about your environment, your habits, and your schedule. After many years ofcompanionship, you will look back at these first months, and try to remember how they were filledwith many challenges. However, with this guide, you are on your way to agreat start. In addition, we’ll also cover some products that will help you in your puppyjourney. These products, when used correctly, will make it easier to train, maintain and live with your new friend for many years to come.As a new pet parent, it’s important to remember that properlytraining your puppy, whether housetraining, crate training or simplecommands, is all interrelated. Training takes dedication, time andpatience. Here are a few basic starting steps. 1. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Puppies are puppies. They are all about the moment and they are easily distracted. 2. Keep your puppy confined in small spaces at first to limit the distractions, accidents and for their general safety. 3. Training a puppy will not happen overnight. It will take time and there will be setbacks along the way. The more time that you as an owner, can put in, the better and easier it will become in the future.2SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 2 10/17/17 8:00 AM

4. Remember to have a very positive attitude while around your new puppy. They are able to understand more than you think and can react either positively or negatively, depending on your attitude. A positive attitude will go a long way in helping your new puppy do what you wish them to do.5. And last… not all puppies are the same. Whether pure-bred or mixed breed, each new puppy has their own attitude and learning ability. Be realistic, have patience, and in time, all puppies can be trained. Chapter 2:Set Up for Success, Think About Your New Puppy and Their SurroundingsWide Open SpacesFor all new puppies, the new world is a huge, overwhelming place, full of new things, readyto be explored. While this is a fine placefor explorations, it is not what a new puppyneeds to undertake without supervision.Create a good, puppy-proof space that yournew puppy can wander in. This becomestheir home space, their “safe” zone. This is nota place where they are sent for punishment, but rather a space where accidents willhappen until they are completely trained. This space should also provide a good area to eat, sleepand drink in, separated from a clearly defined space away from everything else to go potty.Puppy SafetyThis is often an overlooked area when it comes to bringing your new puppy into your home.Things we take for granted are often left on the floor, out of our sight. For a puppy though, thesethings are at their level, perfect playthings, toys and things to chew on. So, while it may soundfunny, try getting down to ground level and looking around, especially in the confined space thatyou will be using. Try to eliminate things that may be sharp, stick out, and things that you do notwant your new puppy to chew on.Next, move around to the areas in your home that will be shared with your new puppy. Things topay careful attention to:1. All power cords for lamps, appliances, etc. These make great tug-of-war play toys.2. Sharp objects on chairs, tables, etc.3. Ornamental items on furniture and other items that can be removed or chewed off and swallowed.4. Remove any furniture and antiques to a safe place for a short time. Puppies do chew on things and will use table legs as a chew toy. 3SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 3 10/17/17 8:00 AM

ExercisePuppies need and should get routine and regular exercise with their new owner. This exercisehelps in some beneficial areas for both you and your new puppy: 1. Exercise will help dissipate some of the boundless energy that puppies tend to have an endless supply of. When expending this energy, this helps the puppy to focus more on the training and good behavior. 2. Exercise also allows you the ability to help correct undesirable behaviors. While on the walk, be the “alpha dog”, the leader making sure they are getting the rules. 3. Regular walks allow more bonding time and help develop your new puppy’s social skills. Meeting other dogs and learning how to act is a good experience for them. 4. At the end of the walk, give them a few moments to explore, but be firm when the time is over. 5. Praise your new puppy constantly when they do good things. Chapter 3: House TrainingExpectationsFor most new pet parents, this is thearea that causes the most anxietywith your new puppy. Be realistic withyour expectations. Your new puppywill get it, they can and will becomehouse trained, but unfortunately, eachpuppy is different. Another big factorin your expectation level, should beyour involvement. Puppies are needy;they want to play, don’t know the rulesyet, are easily distracted and have littlepatience. You on the other hand, need a lot of patience. Be firm, but gentle. Persistence on yourpart will help your new puppy do what you want them to do. Simple Solution: Never strike, kick or yell at your new puppy. Aggressive behavior on your part will probably scare the dog and may make them more aggressive.4SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 4 10/17/17 8:00 AM

The TourWhen your new puppy arrives in the house, it is veryimportant to take them on a tour of their new environment.First, let them visit their area. Place them inside the crate orconfinement area and let them search, sniff and seek outthe area while you watch them. This will allow them to get toknow their area, and in addition, you will be able to noticeanything that they pay specific attention to. If they spendtime with something that you may perceive as an issue, potential chewing or puppy safety, you can take care of thatlater when they are playing with someone else or sleeping. After thoroughly searching their area, it’s time to visit the other areas that they will be allowed into.It is important that you be with them at all times. Make sure that they are shown the areas that arenot theirs or are off-limits, which will be met with a gentle “no” or a descriptive sound from youindicating that that area is not acceptable.Accidents will happen! When it comes to a new puppy, there willbe many issues and accidents. It is yourjob to make sure the environment is free ofsafety issues, but in the end, puppies willfind everything. Here are some tips to helpreduce the number of accidents that mightoccur: 1. Give your puppy something to play with and chew on. A puppy-safe toy is good, but make sure that there are no loose parts that could come off while chewing and be ingested or cause the puppy to choke. 2. A shoe or toy that looks like a shoe, is not a good thing to give a puppy or a dog. Every shoe will now look like and become a new chew toy.3. If the puppy starts to play or chew the puppy pads (see page 8), consider purchasing a puppy pad holder. This holder holds the pad in a sturdy frame, while still allowing your puppy access to the pads.4. Be patient, puppies will eventually get it with your help. It is true that the more time you spend up-front with your puppy, training and guiding, the more quickly all of this will pay off. Happy pet parent equals happy puppy. Simple Solution:If more than one person in the house will be training the new puppy, be sure toshare the expectations and rules with everyone. Mixed messages for the newpuppy will only confuse and delay training. 5SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 5 10/17/17 8:00 AM

Chapter 4:Proper Cleaning of Pet Stains and OdorsWhat is the best way to get rid of stains and odors? Well, we decided to ask Scott Plasek, the petstain and odor expert with Simple Solution, who spends his time testing formulas and deliverysystems to find the best ones for eliminating stains and discouraging repeated marking. Whatfollows are Scott’s tips and tricks for getting rid of pet stains.Buy the right product for the job. There are products on the market formulated specifically for stains, for odors, for both stain andodors, and even just for urine. Scott tells us that oxygen-activated (Oxy) formulas are best forremoving tough stains. Also, an aerosol product with a continuous power spray is preferable toone with a trigger spray because it lets you reach a wider area and penetrates deep into fibers. How to Clean 1. Use paper towels to pick up the mess and then soak up any liquid. If you’re dealing with pet feces, use a pet waste pick-up bag to dispose of it. 2. Douse the soiled area with pet stain remover. For carpets, Scott says pet urine leaks down into the backing and spreads for several inches, so it is best to spray a ring several inches outside the stain area and then flood the inside with the stain remover. Make sure you spray enough liquid on the stain. Keep spraying until it is really wet—but not saturated. 3. Let it dry, then vacuum. 4. Treat old stains differently than new stains. You need to use more stain remover and let it stay wet for longer. 5. Clean stained bedding, pet beds and other fabrics in the washing machine. Use an Oxy product, let it sit for an hour or two, then wash in warm water if the fabric label says it allows this temperature.Simple Solution has a full line of stain and odor products for anysurface. For urine, use the Simple Solution Urine Destroyer orSimple Solution Stain and Odor. For stains and solid messes likefeces, use the Simple Solution OXY formulations for best results.6SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 6 10/17/17 8:01 AM

Chapter 5: Confine, Then Keep the ScheduleGates and CratesWhen it comes to confinement of your new puppy, to help determine which option is best for youand your new puppy, simply look around your home. Do you have areas or rooms in your homewhere an accident will not affect your flooring? Can that room be puppy-proofed from your new“chew everything ‘cause I’m teething” machine? What size is your puppy and how much room dothey need? How active are they? Here are some advantages and dis-advantages of each: Advantages DisadvantagesGates Easy to install Not as secure, puppies are escape artists Can be mounted If not installed, need to climb over to get in Usually allow more spaceNote: Always purchase a gate without rungs. Puppies can get caught between easily Advantages Disadvantages Easy to install May need more than one as puppy grows largerCrates Confined space in any room Need to be cleaned often Small area for puppy to go pottyNote: Purchase the right size for your puppy, with small wire openings. Puppies try to squeezethrough small openings if they can. Simple Solution:When it comes to buying a crate for yourpuppy, think about a couple of things first. One, will your puppy be in the crate as a full-grown dog. Some dogs find it very soothingto be in their crate, their dog cave. If yes, then purchase a crate that is appropriate forthe size your dog will become. As a starterfor your puppy, however, create a dividerthat eliminates some of the space if needed.SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 7 7 10/17/17 8:01 AM

Chapter 6: Training PadsYour new puppy will be spending a lot of time in the house and will needsomewhere to go potty when in their confined space. Training pads arethe perfect solution for this.In the past, most owners just used newspaper or paper towels and placedthem on the floor. Not only were these not very absorbent, they allowedpuppies to think that any paper on left on the floor was their pottystation. Simple Solution training pads are designed tohelp your puppy understand where to go on aconsistent and routine basis.Simple Solution pads have: 1. Special absorbent material that absorbs the urine and holds it 2. A polymer backing that does not allow leaks. 3. Odor control technology that helps contain urine odors 4. They are sprayed with a proprietary attractant that attracts most puppies to use them.First, spread a couple of pads over a defined space in the confinement area. Do not completelycover the area, this will confuse the new puppy. As your puppy starts to use the pads, you willnotice that they will be going in the same area or to the same pad most of the time. When thishappens, you can start to reduce the number of pads that you use. After your puppy eats, wakes up or plays very hard, lead your puppy to the pad. It may benecessary to place your puppy on the pad for the first couple of times. The puppy may walk offthe pad without using it, but be diligent, gently placing your puppy back on the pads again andagain. If nothing has happened after several times, take a break, but try again in several minutes. If your puppy uses the pad, praise, praise, praise… “Good puppy!”… “Good dog!”. Your puppywants to please you, it is in their nature. If your puppy is having a hard time getting used to the pads and how to usethem, follow these simple tips: 1. Be diligent, do not give up. It will take several attempts for your new puppy to get the process down. 2. Be sure to praise your new puppy anytime they use the pad, they want to please you. 3. Look for signs that they are looking for a place to go potty. As you and your new puppy get to know each other, you will start to recognize the signs when they are looking for a spot to go. See chapter 11 for more tips. 4. Replace pads frequently when used with new ones.8SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 8 10/17/17 8:01 AM

Simple Solution training padsare powered by InstaShieldTechnology, these premiumdog pads are speciallyengineered with 6-Layers ofleak-proof protection andfeature a 3-in-1 Attractant andWetness Indicator. It’s anotherSimple Solution to make petparenting easier. Chapter 7: RoutinePuppies, and dogs in general, need a consistent, regular routine.A healthy puppy likes to eat at regular intervals, just like people. They utilize a lot of energy playing, and just generally being apuppy, so they need fuel to grow into a healthy dog.Hence, it is best to establish a regular routine fortheir feeding time, keeping as much to the scheduleas possible in the beginning. As you becomeaware of their habits, the schedule can begradually adjusted to fit everyone’s schedule. However, we know that life is not consistent and there are things that happen. Here is where alittle pre-planning goes along way. Try to find someone that can help out, when and if needed…a neighbor, dog sitter… someone that can be contacted to help in the event that the schedulecannot be kept. Someone who can feed, make sure they have water (puppies knock over theirwater bowls a lot), take them for a quick walk and possibly change the puppy pads. In the end, some good planning up-front will help relieve some puppy and your stress.Other routine things to keep in mind: 1. Keep you puppy’s food and water in the same place. Do not move them around. 2. Try to keep the training pads in the same place or area. 3. If you are starting to train your puppy to go potty outside, walk them to the same area each time. 4. Always praise the good things.Momma and Daddy have to go to workThis is the hardest part of a new puppy’s life, and possibly yours too – having to leave them athome. You will probably stress about the schedule, what they are getting into, what they arechewing up, what mess they will leave, but for your new puppy, they are only thinking about onething… “that you were here and now you are not”. They think that you have left and are not 9SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 9 10/17/17 8:01 AM

coming back. It is very important in the first days and weeks to limit the time that you are away fora start, if possible. The more you can accomplish this, the less anxiety your puppy will feel. Here are some good tips: 1. To start, confine your puppy during the day while you are at home and leave them alone in their area. They will tend to bark and whimper, but wait till they calm down, then return. When you puppy sees that you have left and then come back, the anxiety of your leaving will get better and eventually they will learn that you will return. 2. Try to be gone for only a few hours at a time if at all possible for the first week or two. 3. When you leave, turn on a radio or TV in the room if possible at a very low volume. Puppies are used to someone, you and your family making noise in the house, and silence can cause anxiety. A soft radio or TV noise will help. Chapter 8: On-going Potty TrainingYou now have mastered the initial puppy training. It is now time to think about the long term.A little pre-planning on what the future holds will go a long way in keeping your puppy happyand healthy.Indoor onlyWhen it comes to training your new puppy, ifyou live in an apartment with little to no greenspace, a small home with no yard, in areas withextreme temperatures, or work full-time outsidethe house, it may be necessary to “indoor only”train your puppy. Also, some small or toy dogbreeds actually prefer “indoor only”. So, whatis your situation? Answer this basic question todetermine if “indoor only” will be a good choicefor you and your puppy.10SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 10 10/17/17 8:01 AM

1. Is there anyone that you can count on that can be there to let your puppy out during the day?If the answer is no, then your dog will need to be an “indoor only” dog. The good news is thatthey are already puppy-pad trained and you are ready to go.OutdoorTraining your puppy to go outdoors is the bestoption for people with large backyards, someoneat home all the time (work from home), aresponsible dog sitter or stay-at-home neighboris available, or a large breed that needs a lot ofexercise and space. If you started with puppy pad training and nowwant to move to outdoor only, the process is verysimple. Gradually move the puppy pads towardthe door that leads to the outdoor area that the puppy will use to go potty. Eventually, you’ll movethe pad to an outdoor location that you want the puppy to use.For walks, make sure that you are a responsible pet parent and pick up after you dog. In somelocations, it is illegal to not pick up your puppy’s waste, but in reality, it is very impolite to notpick up after your puppy everywhere you go. Visit your local Pet retailer for waste bags that arespecifically designed for this purpose.Indoor and OutdoorWhile we all lead fast-paced lives, one thing is for sure, you and your puppy will be on the go alot. This option is best for people that travel, use a doggie day care or stay with someone elseduring the day. Also, weather may play a huge factor in this, as well. Extreme weather, either hotor cold may induce a puppy to eliminate waste inside, but on the beautiful days, outside is thebest. So, here are some tips on training your dog to go inside and outside with ease. 1. Always keep the puppy pads in the same place indoors. This will be the safe place for your puppy to go. 2. You may consider also placing a pad outside, in the area that you want your dog to go potty in. 3. When traveling, always do a tour of the new area, making sure that the tour also includes showing where the puppy pad is. a. Make more frequent outside visits. This will help your puppy remain calm and less anxious about new surroundings. b. Do not use more puppy pads than they are used to. Don’t cover the entire floor with 11SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 11 10/17/17 8:01 AM

pads in a new place. Simply use the same amount as always, just make sure they know where this is. Using more will likely confuse them.4. Praise, praise, praise when your puppy does what they are supposed to do. Simple Solution: While it is best to offer water to your puppy all day long, a good routine is to remove the water by 7 – 8 o’clock each night before the potty break or walk. This will help your puppy learn to hold their bladder. Chapter 9: What Happened, I Thought We Had This?My puppy just doesn’t want to go.Well, this will happen a lot early on. Your puppy is easily distracted and wants to play and explorethis new world. Taking the time to go potty is not something that is planned by your puppy, itsimply just happens. Be patient, take them to the spot or puppy pad for several minutes. If nothinghappens, take a break for a few minutes and try again. Look for the signs, sniffing around, circling,or stopping short are all signs that your puppy will be going soon. Keep going back to the spotover and over, till your puppy goes.My puppy goes to the same spot inside over and over. This is an issue with proper stain and odor cleaning. The spot was not cleaned properly the lasttime and your puppy has found the spot again. Follow the cleaning instructions in Chapter 4.When the spot is cleaned properly, your puppy will probably not go back there. My puppy doesn’t or can’t wait to be walked.Remember, puppies have small and developing bladders and simply don’t think about waiting togo. They are too busy being a puppy. Be patient, it is usually a short-term issue. If it goes on formore than a couple of weeks, then it most likely is a schedule issue. Your puppy doesn’t trust yourschedule to be on time; instead of waiting for you, the puppy just goes potty when it needs to. So,12SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 12 10/17/17 8:01 AM

in this instance, it’s best to start over again. Go back to shorter intervals and try your best to stay onschedule. Also, pay attention to the timing. Puppies are on their own schedule, after they eat ordrink, they need to go potty right after usually in about 20 minutes. Plan to take them out beforethat time for several weeks to get back on schedule. My dog refuses to go at the “special” spot.Well, this is probably due to the fact that your puppy may beconfused. Think about things that may be confusing them: walktimes that vary in length, confusing commands from you and/or your anxiety about getting this over with quickly to do otherthings. To ease this, simply remember to take your time, lookaround, relax and have some patience. My dog sneaks off to go potty. This is most likely a behavior issue. This is probably the result of a confusion about where togo, a huge reaction from you over a potty accident, or maybe just the stress from you overhousebreaking in general. The best way to handle this is patience. Find the secret spot and cleanit thoroughly. Make sure you are following the schedule and confine the puppy. Praise thoroughlywhen your puppy goes to the right place. My puppy is starting to mark territory. This is definitely a behavior issue. Your puppy is urinating on things to markdominance. In a sense, this could be a challenge to the “alpha dog”, which is you,or other dogs within the home. Some tips are: 1. Some obedience training may be needed to instill the “alpha dog” dominance 2. A dog behavior specialist may be helpful. 3. Consider spaying or neutering. 4. Make sure all urine spots are thoroughly cleaned. 5. If you catch them in the act, use the corrective action word or noise immediately. Then, lead the puppy to the potty spot desired. Chapter 10: Stain and Odor FAQ’sAfter walking you through cleaning pet messes and particularly bad odors, nowwe want to talk to you about the science behind cleaning; it really does takes alab coat to create some truly innovative stain and odor-destroying products. Wetalked with Scott Plasek, again to learn how a stain and odor product is testedand produced: 13SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 13 10/17/17 8:02 AM

Scott Plasek: First, as you can imagine, we do a lot of stuff thatis smelly and messy! We build formulations that are designed toremove the nasty stuff your dog or cat leaves behind, so we handlethings that most people don’t want to. Second, we deal with alot of science, such as breaking down organic waste materialsto base-level science so we can figure out how to remove themfrom surfaces. And third, we have to be knowledgeable about theproperties of all surfaces that could receive pet stain and odors tomake sure we build formulations that will not harm them. How do you find the right formula for your products?Scott: We always start with the science of the waste product that weneed to remove. By breaking down the waste compounds, we can build a base formulation thatwill work effectively at removing the problem area. Then we test, we test again, and then test somemore until we get the results that make the best formula. What’s the difference between liquid and foam when it comes to pet stain andodor removers?Scott: Contrary to belief, foam is not always the best solution to a waste problem. In terms ofstains, foam does tend to lift dirt and other materials from fibers in carpet, but does not work wellwhen it comes to odors, where contact time is key. For odors, longer contact time is always better,so more liquid and less foam is best. What can you tell our readers about the machine that tests your productson carpets?Scott: We love our machine! We use it to test for a number of things, such as removal of petwaste material by weight. The machine measures the carpet or surface and lets us know if, whencleaned with our Simple Solution formulas, the items will return to their original brightness orcolor. What are the hardest pet stains for you to test?Scott: Blood is always the hardest stain to remove fromanything, especially once set. Simple Solution products aredesigned to work effectively on blood stains, new or old.For new stains, blot with a cloth to remove excess, saturatethe spot, blot some more. For old stains, thoroughlysaturate the stain and let sit. After the stain starts to loosenfrom the surface, saturate again and start to blot. Whendry, vacuum. For severe blood stains, it may take multipleapplications. What happens when the “good” bacteria in your products fight the “bad”bacteria that cause pet odors?Scott: Bacteria live all around us, constantly. Normal pet waste contains bacteria that help createan odor that people do not like. We engineer the bacteria in the Simple Solution products tofind these odor-causing bacteria and they become the food for the good bacteria. The mostimportant part to know is that bacteria must have moisture to live and thrive, so to help these“good” bacteria win out, you must thoroughly saturate the area and let it sit.14SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 14 10/17/17 8:02 AM

Have you ever met a pet stain or odor that defeated you?Scott: Not yet. In pet stain and odor, the main issue for pet parents is not using enough product.A good rule of thumb is this: a normal-size dog’s urine spot on the carpet will require at least aquarter of the bottle (8 oz.) of Simple Solution product to remove the new spot. This will ensurethat there are enough good bacteria to thrive and consume the bad bacteria. For stains, spray andwait for the formula to work as per the instructions. Many people spray and remove immediately, which is not the right way. Spray and let the product work and you will see great results.Do you have any insider tips from your lab that you can share with our readers?Scott: Yes, I would be happy to: 1. Read the product’s directions and follow them. 2. Apply the right amount of product; using less than what is needed will not get the results you want. 3. Use the right product for your needs. Oxy products work great on stains and not so good on odors, while Pro-bacteria™ & Enzyme products work great on odor-causing areas and not as great on stains. Chapter 11: Final Thoughts and TipsCorrecting your puppy. The most important tip for training your puppy is timing. It doesn’t matter whether it is praise, preventing a possible mistake, or correction of behavior, it must be done at the very momentthat the issue occurs. Seconds later is too late. Correcting training behavior at a later time onlyreinforces what they are doing at that moment, which could be anything. So be patient, if youcannot accomplish the corrective behavior or praise at the right moment, don’t worry. Read the signs… it’s time to potty. 15SS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 15 10/17/17 8:02 AM

Look for the signs that your puppy is looking for a spot to go. Most puppies give very clear signalswhen they are looking for a spot to go.Look for: 1. Circling…most dogs will circle an area before going2. Sniffing around on the ground… they are looking for a good spot.3. Trying to get to closed or confined areas that are hidden from your view.4. Very young puppies may not give a lot of indication. It’s best to stick to a very short schedule of potty intervals until you confirm the clear signs of your new puppy.Potty Training Schedule.Number of Potty Breaks Needed by Puppy AgeAge in weeks Potty breaks per day6-15 8-1015-20 6-920-30 4-730+ 3-5Potty CommunicationWhen training your puppy to go outside, it’s important to go to the same area if possible eachtime. It is also important to come up with a “key” word that will help initiate the potty thoughts withyour puppy as well. Words like “potty”, “go now”, or any word that associates the action with thecommand from you are ideal. 16 10/17/17 8:02 AMSS_Puppy_Guide_Final.indd 16
