Family Devotion 2022-06-5 How to Begin and End Each Day Psalm 57:1-11 ESV (Together Read-aloud) David wrote this Psalm when he fled from Saul into a cave. He records one day's experience and gives advice on living our lives. First, close each day in prayer in verses 1-4: Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; In the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. 2 I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. 3 He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me. SelahGod will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness! 4 My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts—the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. Take all your concerns to God. When you start trusting Him, He changes you, and you see your surroundings in a new way. By faith, you enter into His presence. Storms don't last forever, but they come; God will take care and never forsake you regarding your problems. He performs and perfects all things for His glory through you. Second, open each day with praise in verses 5-8: Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! 6 They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah 7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody! 8 Awake, my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! While David was sleeping, God was working for him. When he awoke, David wanted God to have all the glory and wanted to tell the world what He had done for him. God answers prayer, and whatever He does is for your good and His glory. Calamities pass, so praise God for seeing you through them. Look up each day with prayer and unlock each day with praise. Praise is great medicine and will take all bitterness, envy, jealousy, and unrest out of life. –– Warren Wiersbe's – A Daily Walk Through the Psalms, 2011, pg 165. Reflection: When you are in a tight place, your great concern should not be how you can get out of it but how God will be glorified. Do you find yourself simply enduring difficulties instead of using them to help yourself grow? Try closing each day in prayer and opening each day with praise. Allow God to accomplish His purposes in your life. Depending on the hand of God, you will find and experience God is faithful.
