Family Devotion 2021-11-21 Child’s questions about Prayer Until now, you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. (John 16:24) Parent: I can see it on your face. You've got a question. Child: Uh-huh. You know we end our prayers, \"In Jesus' name\"? Parent: Yes….. Child: Well, why do we? Does that mean if we don't say, \"In Jesus' name,\" our prayers are no good or that God doesn't hear us or answer? Who said we have to say, \"In Jesus' name\" and …. Parent: Wait, wait, wait. You had some of the same questions I had when I was your age. Our prayers will still get through to God even if we don't use Jesus' name. The reason we do, however, is because Jesus told us to. When you pray, \"In Jesus' name,\" there's more to it than just saying the words. It means that we are willing to be obedient to what He taught us. And when we are obedient, we will be praying for what He wants us to pray for. Understand? Child: I'm trying to….. Parent: I guess the big word here is obedience. The more obedient we are to Jesus, the more we pray according to His will. Perhaps giving you four purposes of praying in His name will help. The first purpose of praying in Jesus' name is to glorify God, not just to get what we want. John 14:13-14 says, \"Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.\" Second, praying this way is based only on what Jesus has done, not on us at all. Third, a person who prays in Jesus' name claims to be His representative, so they need to be a true believer. That can be costly today. Finally, when you pray in Jesus' name, you should be trying to pray as Jesus would in the same situation. How's all that for an answer? To pray is to know God.
