Devotion Week 22: 4th July 2021 Theme: Standing Together When Things are Shaky Bible verses: Philippians 1:27 ESV 27 Only let your manner of life be worthy[a] of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, It is always encouraging when believers are able to stand together in the face of difficulty and opposition. Oftentimes, opposition comes from the outside. Other times, opposition comes from within. Yes, believers often find themselves at odds with other believers. And while the reasons are unending, the end result is always the same: damage to our witness, weakening of our bond, and fracturing of essential relationships. Division destroys. The Apostle Paul, in his famous letter to the believers of Philippi, was insistent of their commitment to unity. Paul knew the power of one or oneness, which is achieved when believers humble themselves for the greater good of the Kingdom. He also knew of the ongoing temptation of always “being right” and the temptation of always “having the last word.” So, Paul admonished these believers to focus! Just One Thing Theologians have suggested that this scripture (Philippians 1:27) is a motto-text for the entire book of Philippians. Paul was adamant about unity. So, of all the things he would write, he wanted to draw everyone’s attention to this singular focus: “standing firm in one spirit…” Paul wants to hear that the Philippians are, in fact, • Living by the Spirit of God: surrendering to God’s Spirit moment by moment. • Living in the spirit of unity: committing oneself to promote unity with other believers. • Living in the fight for the gospel: battling for souls on the front lines as a missionary. He wants these objectives to be fulfilled together! Talk It Over Unity can be difficult. What hindrances have you experienced in your pursuit of unity? What examples of successful reconciliation have you experienced? What steps will you take going forward to keep unity at the forefront of your relationships? Prayer Pray this week: Lord, help me to love my brothers and sisters. Help me to walk in humility, as Christ modelled. Help me to extend forgiveness, to give the benefit of the doubt when there is confusion, and to extend grace to others. Help me to model the power of one in my home, at my church, and in my ministry. All for your glory. In Christ’s name, amen. 7

CMCA Mercy Methodist Church 11.06.2021 Dear Reverends, Pastors, Brothers and Sisters in Christ of CMCA, Peace in the Lord! We thank God for His grace and love for choosing us to serve the Him with one heart and one mind in all the churches and preaching point in Australia! 1. Our Story It all began in September 2013, with the encouragement of then Bishop Kwang, under the leadership of Rev. Alexis Lui and LCEC of EMP Methodist Church, the first Chinese Worship Service of EMP Preaching Point was held at a rented venue at Sunnybank Community Centre in Brisbane, giving birth to a church planting ministry. After about a year, due to the increased rental cost of the Sunny bank venue, the church then secured the rental of Mansfield Christian Reformed Church venue in January 2015 (the current rented worship place) to continue to reach out to the Chinese community and entrusted a group of brothers and sisters from EMP Methodist Church to commit and serve in the Preaching Point. Praise the Lord, for over the next few years, through the passionate pastoral care of Rev. Alexis Lui and Rev. Tay and the faithful brothers and sisters in serving the Lord, the congregation number and the financial capability of the Preaching Point gradually increased. 2. Establishment of Mercy Methodist Church In order to move towards becoming a church, a working committee team (including the church building team) was set up at the end of 2018 with the consent of the LCEC and Reverends of the EMP Methodist Church, in order to work together with EMP church executive committee to manage the ministries in the preaching point. By the grace of the Lord, the inauguration of the Chinese Methodist Church of Australia (CMCA) Mercy Methodist Church was held during the Thanksgiving Sunday Service on 29th December, 2019 under the auspices of Bishop Albert Wong. 3. Church Purchase Plan As a relatively newly established Church, building or purchasing an existing church is an extremely challenging task. However, the executive committee of Mercy Methodist Church, the church building team, and brothers and sisters have the same vision that Mercy Methodist Church needed to have our own worship venue to continue to expand its church ministries mainly because: ) Our Sunday Service is allocated to 3:00pm as the current rented venue also accommodates the worship times of other congregations. 2) We do not have a formal lease agreement for the rented venue, and so may be forced to relocate at any time. 3) There is a lack of classrooms for adult and children's Sunday School classes at the current venue, therefore some of the Sunday school classes are currently held at home prior to Sunday Service. 14
