Devotion Week 5: 7th March 2021 Theme: Tough Minded Faith for Tender Hearted People Hymn: What a Friend we have in Jesus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKjUoE2fack Bible Verse: Hebrews 11:1 ESV Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Faith is trusting the unprovable. “I would love to be a believer, if I knew it was the truth,” an intelligent young Japanese man said. “Prove it to me. That’s what the unbelieving world is waiting for. We’re scientific. We want proof before we believe.” “But that’s a contradiction,” the pastor answered. “If there is proof, there no longer is room for belief. For faith believes in that which cannot be proven. Let me sum it up in this sentence: When proof is possible, faith becomes impossible.” The young man asked, “But if God wants us to be believers, why didn’t He prove Himself to us?” Pastor quoted Hebrews 11:6. “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” The same is true in human relationships. When somebody believes in you before you’ve earned their trust, you have been honoured! When they trust you even though you didn’t display your credentials, faith is born. God knew what He was doing when He established the belief system. When you strip away all mystery and leave the truth naked and mathematically scientific, something sweet and attractive is lost. There will always be unknown. There will always be unprovable. But faith confronts those frontiers with a thrilling leap. Then life becomes vibrant with adventure! The scripture reading is a call to draw near to God and to keep on persevering in faith, through remembrance of the reconciling work of Jesus. We have been given this boldness and confidence to approach God, through faith is Jesus Christ. He has made the way, by his death and resurrection, for us to be reconciled to God. We can come to an approachable and relational God, who is attentive to us, because of Jesus’ sacrifice. What greater encouragement could there be of God’s love for us! We receive, by faith, a fresh revelation of His love, and renewed strength. For God’s Word promises that when we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. Reflection: • Are you putting your trust in God to guide you every step of the way? • How does worldly pragmatism affect faith? • How can faith in the invisible God be expressed in our daily lives? • How would you assess your faith in this regard? Prayer 8

The Methodist Social Creed The Methodist Church must view the perplexing times and problems that we face today in the light of the life and teachings of Jesus. Jesus taught us to love our neighbours and seek justice for them as well as for ourselves. To be silent in the face of need, injustice, and exploitation is to deny him. We believe that God is Father of all peoples and races, that Jesus Christ is his Son, that all men are brothers, and that each person is of infinite worth as a child of God. We believe that “the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” Our own capacities and all we possess are gifts of the Creator, and should be held and used in stewardship to him. We believe that God in Christ is seeking to redeem all men and also society. This redemption is a continuing necessity. We believe that the grace of God in Christ is available for redemption from individual and social sin as we seek in penitence and obedience to do his holy will. We believe that all persons have supreme value in the sight of God, and ought to be so regarded by us. We test all institutions and practices by their effect upon persons. Since Jesus died for the redemption of all men, we believe we should live to help save man from sin and from every influence which would harm or destroy him.
