Metaphor What is a metaphor? A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. Example Love is a battlefield. Bob is a couch potato. 2

analogy What is an analogy? An Analogy means to compare similarities between one thing and another by comparing similarities but explaining to clarify, therefore analogy is more complex than metaphor. Example Life is a box of chocolates. 4

SIMILE What is a SIMILE? It is a visual expression by directly comparing two things by using 'as’ and 'like'. You might say “learning English is like wading through toffee” when it is difficult, or that it. is “smooth as silk”, when it is easy, we can apply simile to every situation. It will add color to the language and meaning of what is said. Example You were as brave as a lion. They fought like cats and dogs. 6
