EFFECTS OF A RECREATIONAL ICE SKATING PROGRAM ON THE FUNCTIONAL MOBILITY OF A CHILD WITH CEREBRAL PALSY (CP)ARTICLE REVIEW The article Effects of a Recreational Ice Skating Program on the FunctionalMobility of a Child with Cerebral Palsy by Walsh and Scharf (2013), is animpressive research article considering that this research study was made with theintention of improving cerebral palsy children’s physical condition. The purposeof the study was to take advantage of a figure skating program to ameliorateambulation, strength, posture and balance. Figure 1 : Ice Skating (2018) For example, a five-year-old female with diagnosis of cerebral palsy (CP)was receiving physical therapy services two times per week practicing guided iceskating to increase abilities, physical strength and endurance. The girl was no ableto walk by herself until she got involved in this program performing several kindsof ice skating exercises to enrich body movement, develop competences and have 1
fun. Children with any illness or disorder are as able as other children to practicesports and enjoy their childhood. It is important to be aware of this figure skatingprogram contribution as a solution and one of the best ways to do physicalexercise making it useful and joyful for them. Figure 2: Cerebral Palsy Skates (2010) If the child is not able to remain standing on their feet or take stepsindependently, they need assistance and guide to help them (2018)to learn to skate.Even, there are several medical (Given, 2010) equipment such as: crutches orwheelchairs for that purpose. In this case the most useful machinery is the walkingframe because it can be used in the ice rink to practice figure skating being partof this functional and beneficial project. To conclude, this article demonstrated the improvements of CP children´sfunctional mobility as four months after this program, the results showed howadvantageous the practice of a sport such as ice skating can be. 2

Figure 1: Autism Research (2018) Figure 1 : Autism Research (2018) This text discusses some of the main insights that emerged in a research studyreport called ‘A Qualitative Interview Study of Parents' Perspectives and Experiences’published in 2017 by three researchers Sarah Hampton, Hugh R, Antonella, and SueFletcher-Watson, from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK. Generally speaking, the article provides relevant perceptions of the role of bilingual parents whose childrenhave been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and what their perceptionare about exposing their children to bilingual environments. This qualitative study aimed at contrasting two groups of parents’ perceptions: 17bilingual parents with a child with ASD, and 18 bilingual parents with a TypicallyDeveloping Child (TDC). According to these researchers, the study is important for thefield of bilingualism in the sense that there has been little research about these tworelevant themes: bilingualism and autism. These researchers, relying on experts, describethat children with ASD usually suffer language difficulties (i.e. can’t cope with thepragmatics of language: management of irony or metaphors, conversational norms, andthe like), delay in the language acquisition, and of course, difficulties to interact orsocialize with others since they often act as if nobody else was close to them, avoiding 1
eye contact, and not knowing how to behave in different situations that cause physicaldiscomfort. From the interview replied by the participants, it is worth noticing that a fewparents with children with ASD believe that due to bilingual environments their childrenseem to have presented delay in language development. On the other hand, both groupsof parents reported that bilingual environments brought a lot of benefits to the child’sintellectual development. Another interesting feature reported by both groups of parentswas related to their child’s motivation. Accordingly, they said that if the child showedinterest in the minority language, then bilingualism was relatively easy to take place;whereas if the child did not show any interest, the task of promoting opportunities to usethe language was more difficult to promote. Finally, I would like to invite my colleagues and future English teachers toacknowledge the importance of these issues about autism and bilingualism, as we mayhave students with ASD. Therefore, reading about these matters help us construct a betterunderstanding of making our classrooms more inclusive. Figure 1: Aportaciones de la Mass Media (2012) The vast information that the media handle can be manipulated, even bythemselves, to change the chip and enter the minds of the people, deciding oneway or another what they see, hear and even read. Let's start by saying that there is great competition between the media(composed of television, radio and newspapers), each of them wants to be themost popular. Giving people, in most cases, erroneous information and eveninformation that they as citizens would like to hear, in this way they achievetheir goal to be the best. However, knowing that in a country like Colombia notmany people read newspapers, the race to win ends up being unleashed betweentelevision and radio. but things don’t become easier. Television by simple logichandles audio and image which leaves the radio at a disadvantage as the mediumof the television image takes advantage to show striking things and manages togive importance to senseless things., Trivia, that is less important than the lifeof the people that die every day in Colombia due to violence. The above said, we can see evidence for example of the debate betweencitizens and candidates for the presidency of Colombia. Any television channelinterested in its country would schedule the debate early in the evening forfamilies to listen to it and debate among themselves, but the channel to its ownconvenience and that of the candidates decides to leave the debate until late atnight and presents its famous series with a happy ending. If we think about it 1
will people want to stay up late to see the debate, or get up early tired from workand study to stay waiting for the debate. They may simply decide to sleep; thisis what happens with our beloved Colombian television. On the other hand, we review the case of radio that can’t be left behind. To gain listeners the short and rapid news they give it is given at about 5 o'clockin the morning when few of us are awake and those that are don’t listen as theyleave their houses running to jobs, schools and universities. This news lastsaround 5 minutes and the rest of the day the radio is full of music that feeds ourminds with trash, mistreatment of women, sex, and drugs among many otherthings. Things that make us forget the Colombian reality, the many unemployedpeople and the countless robberies that end up killing and wounding hundredsof people every day. Finally, our beloved newspaper which ends up giving a slight hope to afew readers, but what happens? The newspaper keeps having to carry out manychanges both in its image and its price to the point of giving itself away so thatthe information reaches everyone. Now if we go out onto the streets theincentive that makes us buy the newspaper is the sample of a new product whichis almost always food and not the newspaper. In conclusion it is important to realize that the means of communication, for example in Colombia, are like machines killing viewers’ autonomousthoughts and as Gabo said once \"to be a journalist, you need an importantcultural base, a lot of practice and a lot of ethics.\" we are surrounded by lies notonly given by our media who in wanting to do more are doing less. Even thepeople, citizens, readers, viewers and listeners, are satisfied with the absurdinformation they give us and even knowing the truth we still ignore it. THE MASS MEDIA Figure 1 Media ColorBox (2018) Nowadays the world is turning to a different kind of mass media, wenotice everything happening in the world through TV, radio and thenewspapers, but this information is created by the journalist, or newsreaders. All the time they advise us about the changes that are happening all around theworld. However the mass media do not shape people's ideas, because theprincipal objective of mass media is to communicate or report everything. Nowadays, people use mass media to give information, specifically theTV because everyone likes to watch TV all the time. Also through entertainmentmedia we can be updated about the world, as a result people like journalists tohave interviews with famous people or anyone with influence. Moreover
publishers give us information through the newspaper, editing the mostimportant news happening currently or about any topic, providing an opinionthat they want to share. Also the mass media do not only communicate, they can also provideentertainment because it is common to watch or listen to various contests orreality shows as a means to have popularity, for example on the radio stationthe speakers have contests to win tickets to concerts or sometimes have conteststo win money. In fact, on reality shows that we have seen on TV, the creatorsshow a history about any famous family, or sometimes they show the everydayreality.Furthermore, the influence of social media has been changing due totechnology, since this feature can be brought to us all the time. This influencehas changed the world and for this reason people can share their ideas throughany social network. People that want to have their own business, create awebsite or have a group on Facebook. Facebook is considered a great tool forsharing ideas, as a result people are all the time on the social network writingabout whatever topic, with which some people agree or disagree. In summary, my opinion of the mass media is that they can onlycommunicate or report, and that the mass media do not shape people's ideas, because they are managed by people who want to give us information that hasbeen sourced professionally and share the ideas that all the people would wantto share using these resources.

SOCIAL NETWORKING : A NEW TREND FILLED WITH BENEFITS & IMPLICATIONS Figure 1: Social Networks (2018) The incorporation of information and communication technology hastremendously impacted the way the world communicates today. We can seenow that people are opting for instant messaging because it saves them time. Inaddition to this, it is more practical when replying to others. Moreover, peoplesee this new trend as a way for meeting people online, exchange informationand making new friends. If we make a contrast with the past, we can see that before people used tocommunicate in a traditional way such as writing a letter, or calling to a phonenumber. However, this has changed quite a lot in the last years because of the 1
emergence of Social Networks which are being widely used around the world. For instance, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. In this article, I will describethe characteristics of each. Additionally, I will explain the benefits but alsoimplications that this new technological era has brought for human beings.Firstly, Facebook is a global social network that works as a channel for peopleall over the world to communicate and interact. Additionally, it has multiplefeatures that makes it very attractive for users; that is probably one of the reasonwhy some people like it the most among other networks. First, you can addfriends, upload pictures, share posts, videos, links or any other information thatyou consider relevant or of your interests. Figure 2: Facebook (2018) 2
Usually once you upload a picture, your friends can see it and comment aboutit or simply just click on the ¨Like´´ button which makes you popular, dependingthe number of Likes you get. This has also worked for the business part and bigcompanies that are devoted to Online marketing to attract new clients andpromote their own products. Figure 3: Facebook Likes (2018)In addition to this, you can also find and discover new people and get toknow different cultures. However, all these are positive benefits and makelife easier for people. Thus, we cannot deny that in this social networkthere are many young people that can get distracted and share personalinformation to strangers; putting themselves at risk; especially theteenager’s population or children. Therefore, it is important that parentsare constantly monitoring what their kids do online when they are notpresent since there are a lot of human trafficking groups behind computer 3
screens waiting for their next victims to appear. Unfortunately, this is avery difficult situation that has being happening and it is important thatfamilies know about it and take preventive measures to protect childrensafety. Figure 3: Human Trafficking (2018)The second social network is Instagram which I personally like better thanFacebook for many reasons. Instagram has a very dynamic and interactiveinterface that is easier for users to navigate on; the menu is very simple andthe privacy settings are more specific than the Facebook´s ones.Furthermore, Instagram is more intimate and private, you can add picturesand upload stories. The good thing is that you can limit the numbers ofviewers or select who do you want to watch your stories. 4
Figure 4: Instagram (2018)Instagram has become in one of the most used marketing platform forcompanies and investors to promote their products, starting from fashiondesigners, clothing and IT companies among others. The third social network is WhatsApp. WhatsApp is the most usedapplication to type in real time, we can share the live location, we can sendvoice messages, we can do audio and video calls. In addition to that nowwe can also send files and documents such as PDFs. The disadvantage isthat the calls and video calls signal is sometimes lost and the connection 5
is a little slow. However, recent improvements have been made to this app. Thus, It is in constant update to offer a better service to the population. Figure 5: Whatsup (2018)To sum up, we think that Social Networks offer a great variety of benefitswhich are endless. We should take advantage of them to make our dailylife situations easier. For instance, If living in another country , there aregoing to be multiple channels and platforms to connect with family andfriends and to always stay in touch and connected ; surpassing theboundaries of time, location and distance. However, there is a social responsibility commitment that parents need totake into consideration for example with their children and teenagers. This 6
commitment must also be taught and spread among users worldwidesince; not what is offered online can be trusted ; and that includes peoplefrom different parts of the world . There are issues and complicatedproblems such as human trafficking that can be avoided if we promote aneducational culture on how to use social networks for meaningful purposesamong ourselves.REFERENCESAbcNews. Figure 1: Mobile Learning (2017) Information and Communication technology (ICT) has changed the way the western worldperceives daily tasks, within this, education has also been transformed by it. Kids go to schooland take their phones or different devices with them; it is not a secret that technology is nowpart of their routines and day to day habits. Thus, kids use social media, video games andapplications because they feel identified and related with trends, topics and cultural aspects thatare happening around the world. However, some people have a negative perception about theuse of mobile phones in several scenarios; for example, using Mobile phones into theclassrooms; especially teachers because they see it as a distraction for students learning processand not as a positive resource that can make learning interactive, flexible and meaningful forboth parties, students and teachers. In this essay I will explain why mobile learning has multiple benefits for learning andhow teachers can manage the challenges that it brings when used in the classroom. First, Mobile learning offers the ability to learn on the go. Bogota is such a busy citythat people rarely have extra time to for doing all the activities that they want or wish theycould do . However, people have managed to deal with the time a little bit ; for example when
taking a transmilenio bus or going on the ride, it is common to see transmilenio users usingapps like the case of Duolingo to practice English and complete the lessons or levels of theday; this is an excellent description of what learning on the go means; doing daily activities butalso taking some minutes to study, check activities and do some homework. Normally, a typicaldaily activity is to wake up, grab some breakfast and go to work early in the morning becausefirst the time is very limited and second, the traffic in the city gets busy. However, the flexibilitythat mobile learning offers is very unique and comfortable for the learner to the point that hecan change the routine a little bit and add an additional task to it. Besides, the fact that a mobiledevice can offer the advantage to study and learn in an autonomous way is a very positiveaspect that is not seen by many but it is there though; because it teaches us to be responsibleand assume a learning role of effort and commitment. Second, Mobile Learning is an excellent educational strategy for governmentinstitutions to reach out to children that live in remote areas and that do not have access topublic education. Colombia is a multi-diverse and multicultural country; the variety of regionsand towns that it has is huge and endless. There are small towns that people do not even knowthat they actually exist and that they are part of the nation; that is the case of Lloró en Choco.Technology has the ability to cross frontiers in distance and time; I personally believe thatMobile learning is such a fantastic idea to bring education to pupils in Choco for example. Theministry of education should incorporate this idea into its strategic plan in order to promote theaccess to public education, especially for children that their living and social environmentconditions does not allow them to have it. Third, Mobile Learning enables personalized learning. It is common to find that notall students learn at the same pace or have the same skills or competencies when understandingnew concepts. Therefore, learning through a phone is a great way for students to study withoutbeing under pressure or when they are submitting assignments or completing quizzes. Inaddition to this benefit, students can keep track of their own strengths and weaknesses whiledoing activities or completing tasks. After that, they can also assess their performance andcheck If they have improved in certain skills or areas. However, some people and educators claim that incorporating a mobile phone into theclassroom brings challenges and some disadvantages for many reasons. The first one has to dowith access to devices and internet. It is necessary to keep in mind that for example in our
Colombian context, not all academic institutions or school districts has a broad technologicalinfrastructure that allow students to use phones into class lessons. Some only have theminimum equipment such as a computers or video beams projectors but no more than that.Another aspect is that not all students have a smartphone with connection to internet especiallyin school district environments for many reasons. One of them is that parents do not considernecessary to invest on a data plan of such a device for a child to have and bring to school. Otherparents prefer that their kids use a regular phones, not smart ones just to communicate and keepin contact with them. Therefore, socioeconomic conditions and cost are a challenge of usingphones to promote mobile learning.I disagree with this position, because it is not necessary to pay a data plan to incorporate mobilelearning. Nowadays, many organizations usually keep a Wi-Fi set up for people to use for free. Therefore, this is an option to connect online and learn. Some apps do not need internetconnection to work properly, just for an initial download.Other conception is that cell phones are seen as a way of distraction in the class rather thana means for learning. Some educators consider the use of cell phones as a bad habit and notas a positive aspect. Why? the list of reasons is endless. For example, the fact that students maygo to Social networks such as Instagram, Facebook or Whats up and unfocus from the objectiveof the class. Other aspect is that students can be connected to other content pages or appsdifferent from the ones specified by the teacher and in this way simultaneously distract otherstudents. I agree with the aspect of Social Networking because is a huge trend right nowbetween teenagers and children. However, I disagree when some people consider as a distraction for the class. I strongly believethat classroom management plays an important role here since teachers need to always monitorthe class even online or offline and pay special attention to what students are doing, checkingif they are completing the required activities and tasks. In addition to this, I consider thateverything depends on the way that teachers communicates with students, how the teacherorganizes the transition from one activity to another and If collaboration is being promoted inthe class. Usually students that work collaboratively are engaged and motivated toward theclass; leaving no space for distraction during the lesson.
To sum up, Mobile Learning is an emerging 21st century pedagogy that promotesautonomous and collaborative learning. Additionally, it motivates students to learn in a non-traditional way by interacting, practicing and assessing their own skills or competencies. Take my advice… Figure1: Learn a Second Language (2015) Nowadays, learning English is very important. In the past, learning another languagewas a very expensive hobby, but nowadays it is a must because a lot of employers are askingfor this skill and this is also a requirement to be able to graduate from college. In this article, I am going to give you some pieces of advice about how to learnEnglish. In addition, I am going to tell you about my own experience learning this newlanguage, and the tool that worked for me. To start, the main advice I’ll give you is to keep going. I know it sounds strange, butlearning a new language can be very difficult, and sometimes people give up easily, so pleasekeep trying, it will be worth it. Another thing you can do is to practice as much as you can;this is going to help you to get used to this new language, and will also help you to winconfidence on yourself. On the other hand, the tools you use for learning are really important. I know thatnowadays there are a lot of different ways of learning a language, but I am going to talk aboutmy own experience. I learned this amazing language by listening to music, that’s it, I didn’tuse any book or website; the music was my teacher. For example, I love Broadway musicals, 1
so by listening to the soundtrack of each musical I started to learn new vocabulary. I alsolearned grammar and I improved my listening. When I learned and sing songs, I alsoimproved my speaking; all of this without even noticing. In this way, for me it was easier tolearn English. This method doesn’t work for everybody, but you can try it, maybe it worksfor you as it worked for me. I hope this article helps you to search new ways of learningEnglish, and I hope you find something that it works for you. Clay is one of the most malleable materials in the world; you can use clay to model statues, pieces of art or even to have authentic crockery. On the other hand, we have the screw, a piece of curved metal that works to support a portrait in a wall, to fix a broken door or to hang a plant in your garden but have your ever thought about nailing a screw in clay? Probably no, because those materials are not supposed to work together for any purpose, and if you even try to nail ascrew in clay, a hole could appear in the clay and the screw probably remains a little bitdirty, but no more than that. Then you can erase that hole by modelling the clay again...and what about the screw? Nothing, because is worthless to nail a screw in clay. But, whathappen when you already nailed the screw in a wall to hang your favorite plant, and thewall hole is too big for the screw and you do not know how to fix it? In that case, you canuse clay to cover the extra space around to “help” the screw to be fixed in the wall andfinally you will hang your favorite plant without problems, in that case both materialssupported each other. Language use L1 vs L2 in an EFL classroom, is one of the biggest issues Englishteachers face most of the times, and mostly “always” when they are teaching to veryyoung learners, kids or people who have not had any contact with L2. It is just that simple,L1 is the screw and L2 is the clay. Students can be the plant and knowledge would be thewall. There is not a magic formula for you to force your students to understand what youare teaching them or why you are there in that classroom telling them why English is 1
important to their life. Sometimes, nailing the screw L1 into the clay L2, is easy, becausethat process does not demand constancy or strategy, it is just required to have slackers inyour classroom and a conformist attitude, so the plant (students) and the wall (knowledge)still remains the same, likewise the screw (L1) and the clay (L2). How is that related with our career?Due to my experience, Teachers must useL2 during the whole lesson no matter ifstudents fully, partially or nullunderstand what you are telling them. You should determine when it isrequired to explain key words in L1 andthen you might apply a strategy ormethod to help students keep growingand learning the L2, for example forthem to keep the “difficult words”, you canask them to have those words in both languages in a personaldictionary with the meaning in English, therefore, the compendium of L1, L2, studentsand knowledge is being well balanced not only during your lesson but also after that. Tosum up, you are the one who chooses if you as a teacher want to use Language to nail ascrew in clay or to use language to cover a screw wall hole with clay.
