CPU ASSIGNMENT Shourya Singh Chouhan 9B 0
CPU Just as the human brain is the most important part of the human body as it directs and controls the actions of a body, CPU is the brain of the Computer. It stands for Central Processing Unit. It performs all the basic logical and arithmetic operations activities and transmits the commands and programs of the computer. All other parts of a computer work as directed by the CPU. It is also called the microprocessor. There are three main types of CPU 1. Transistor type CPU 2. Large Scale Integration type CPU 3. Small Scale Integration type CPU VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF CPU There are three main parts of CPU ( Central Processing Unit ) 1. The ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) 2. CU (Control Unit) 3. Registers
ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) This unit performs the computing functions. • Arithmetic operations which include Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division • All logic operations which involve comparisons such as less than, greater than or equal to. The result of these operations are stored in the registers or in memory or sent to output devices. REGISTERS All data is temporarily stored in registers during the execution of programs. Registers offer very fast memory but very limited in size. CU (Control Unit) The CU provides several functions: • It fetches, decodes and executes instructions • It issues control signals that control hardware • It moves data around the system --------- By Shourya Singh Chouhan 9B----------
