LOOKING FORWARD TO THE OLYMPICS FORMER LETAS PLAYERS ON THE ROAD TO RIO The LET Access Series events award Rolex World Ranking points to players, which means that LETAS members have a fantastic opportunity to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. With just 18 months to go until the first tee shot is struck, two recent stars of LETAS were in a strong position to qualify. Switzerland’s Fabienne In-Albon was 51st while Chloé Leurquin of Belgium was 56th out of the field of 60 women. Both players appeared on the Olympic ranking whilst playing on LETAS. Fabienne feels that playing on LETAS really helped her game. She won the 2013 Azores Ladies Open before moving on to the LET in 2014, where she finished second to Gwladys Nocera in the Hero Women’s Indian Open in December. When asked to summarise her experience on LETAS, she quoted basketball analyst Seth Greenberg, who said: “You don’t have any chance to succeed until you learn how to compete.” She added: “LETAS really helps young players to gain experiences as a professional or on a professional level, which is an important step in order to move on to the next level at the LET.” Fellow 2013 LETAS tournament champion Leurquin won the Mineks Ladies Classic before moving on to the LET and recording a career best finish of 11th in the Xiamen Open in China. She also feels that LETAS was crucial to her success and said: “The LETAS was very helpful for my career on the LET because it was a very good transition between the amateur and the professional world. Moreover winning my card through the LETAS enabled me to play all the events, even the events with limited fields; events that can make a difference at the end of the year to be in the top 80 of the ranking.”9
Next year’s Olympic Games will take place from August 5-21, 2016, and the women’sgolf will be played on Wednesday August 17-Saturday August 20.Both players are thrilled about the prospect of qualification when golf returns to theOlympic programme for the first time in 112 years.Chloé continued: “I am really excited about the Olympics. I think it is a dream forevery athlete. Now that it is getting nearer, it has become a little bit more real. I knowI am very close to qualifying, but I also know I am on the edge so when I am playing atournament I remind myself that every shot can make a difference.”Fabienne said: “The Olympics have always been a dream for me. Since I was a littlegirl I’ve dreamt about competing at the Olympic Games and now I’ve actually got thechance to make it reality, so this is very special for me and I won’t let go of this dream. If you have a dream: never stop chasing it!”Golf was played in the Olympics for the second time in 1904, at St Louis, USA, but atthat time, only men’s competitions were played.Women’s golf was included at the Paris Olympic Games in 1900, when the 22participants included 12 men and 10 women from four countries. The women’schampion was Margaret Abbott while the men’s champion was Charles Sands, both ofthe USA. The game’s popularity surged as a response and it is hoped that it will have asimilar effect when the sport returns to the Games in 2016.Both the format and qualification system for the golf competitions next year are still tobe ratified by the IOC Executive Board, but a 72-hole individual stroke play competitionwas the format proposed to the IOC by the International Golf Federation (IGF).The IOC has restricted the IGF to an Olympic field of 60 players for each of the men’sand women’s competitions. The top 15 world ranked players will be eligible, with a limitof four players from a given country. Beyond the top 15, there will be a maximum oftwo eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more playersamong the top 15. 10
EMMA WESTIN 2014 LETAS ORDER OF MERIT WINNER AN INTERVIEW WITH EMMA What were the highs of your amateur career? “All the experiences I have got during the years, both as a human and a golf player. This sport has given me so much more than just the game of golf.” When did you turn professional? “I turned pro in 2012 before the season started.” Why did you join LETAS? “I joined LETAS because four of the tournaments were included in the Swedish “Nordea Tour”. It was a great complement to my first two years as a pro. 2014 was my first full year on the LET Access, and I joined the tour because I thought it would develop me as a golf player. The second reason I joined LETAS is because if you play good golf all year it will help you get closer to the Ladies European Tour.” Did it meet your expectations? “Yes. It is a great tour and as I said before, girls will develop much more all around the world because of the LETAS.” What was the highlight of your 2014 season on LETAS? “My highlights last season were my three victories and the feelings that came with it. Of course, another highlight was the moment when I realised I had won the LET Access Order of Merit.” Would you recommend others to play on the tour? “Yes of course, it is a great tour and I think most of the girls are going to love it!” What are your goals as a rookie on the LET in 2015? “This year is going to be great. I am looking forward to play a lot of good golf courses, learn much more about my game and myself at the golf course and get a lot of new experiences.” What was the best thing that you learned from last year that you can apply this year? “One thing that I really appreciate is all the experiences I gained in different situations. I learned a lot about myself last year, how I feel and how I act in different situations.”11

PILSEN GOLF CHALLENGE Golf Park Plzeň, Prague, Czech Republic 9 - 11 July 2014 Sweden’s Emma Nilsson shot a closing round of 70, for a three round total of 206, to claim the Pilsen Golf Challenge in a two-hole play-off against France’s Melodie Bourdy. Bourdy shot a 4 under par 67 to come through the field and put herself in a position to claim her first title on the LET Access Series. Nilsson needed a birdie in the final three holes to draw level with the Frenchwoman and she delivered with a crucial putt on the par four 16th hole, to force a play-off. On the first extra hole, both players showed signs of nerves, Bourdy coming up short of the par four 18th green with her approach shot and chipping well past the hole. The Frenchwoman then failed to hole her 15 foot putt for par, which sat agonisingly on the edge of the hole. Nilsson just caught the right edge of the green with her approach but proceeded to three putt, missing from four feet for her par. Nilsson and Bourdy played the 18th hole twice before a two-putt par on the second play-off hole was good enough for Nilsson to earn her first LETAS win, which also earned her a place in the LET Sberbank Golf Masters, played on the same golf course later in the year. Three players tied for third place at 6 under par, Switzerland’s Caroline Rominger, Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini and Lina Boqvist from Sweden. OPEN GENERALI DE STRASBOURG Golf Club de Strasbourg, Illkirch-Graffenstaden, France 25 - 27 September 2014 England’s Georgia Hall recorded her first win as a professional at the Open Generali de Strasbourg with a four shot victory over a trio of players, finishing at 10 under par. The former European ladies number one amateur started the day in a tie for the lead with France’s Cassandra Kirkland and Vittoria Valvassori from Italy at 6 under par and the talented young player pulled ahead with birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes. The 18-year-old then bogeyed the 5th and 8th holes and Kirkland birdied the 6th to pull ahead by a shot. Four birdies in a row from the 10th to the 13th gave Hall the momentum to forge a comfortable lead, which she consolidated with pars on the final five holes. The former Curtis Cup player was keen to secure her first professional win and adopting a calm approach had assisted in achieving her goal. Kirkland finished in a tie for second place at 6 under par, alongside Denmark’s Daisy Nielsen (71) and Belgian Manon de Roey, who finished as the top amateur. AZORES LADIES OPENGolf de Batalha, Sao Miguel Island, Portugal3 - 5 October 2014Norway´s Tonje Daffinrud won the Azores Ladies Open at Golf de Batalha to claimher first professional title, with a three shot win over the Czech Republic´s DanielaProrokova.Daffinrud started the final day at 5 under par, one shot ahead of Prorokova and twoahead of Switzerland’s Caroline Rominger. The Norwegian quickly fell behind withbogeys on the 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th in tough, windy conditions.Prorokova played steadily on the opening nine holes, matching two birdies with twobogeys to take a three shot lead. But a string of four bogeys on the back nine put paidto the 21-year-old’s opportunity to win her first title on the LET Access Series, finishingat one under par and taking second place.A run of late bogeys ruined Rominger’s chances and gave Daffinrud a glimmer of hopethat she could still claim her first professional win.The 23-year-old from Tonsberg pulled away from both Rominger and Prorokova withthree birdies in her final three holes to claim her first professional victory in only hersecond event in the paid ranks.Tonje Daffinrud 212 (-4) 71 68 73Daniela Prorokova 215 (1-) 70 70 75Caroline Rominger 216 (E) 70 71 75Linda Henriksson 219 (+3) 76 69 74Laura Murray 221 (+5) 75 72 74 32
GRECOTEL AMIRANDES LADIES OPEN Crete Golf Club, Hersonissos, Greece 10 - 12 October 2014 Norway’s Tonje Daffinrud shot an even par 71 in the final round of the Grecotel Amirandes Ladies Open at Crete Golf Club, to win by three shots from Denmark’s Daisy Nielsen and record back-to-back wins on the LET Access Series. Daffinrud, a professional for just over a month, won the Azores Ladies Open in only her second event in the paid ranks the week before, adding the Grecotel Amirandes Ladies Open title for an impressive start to her career. The 23-year-old from Tonsberg started the final round with a three shot lead over Nielsen, which she extended to five, with birdies on the 2nd and 6th holes, as Nielsen bogeyed the opening hole. The young Norwegian never looked in danger of relinquishing her comfortable lead, even after a string of three birdies in a row from the 14th to 16th holes for Nielsen narrowed the gap to three shots. Sweden’s Anna Svenstrup, enjoyed her season best finish in a tie for third place alongside recent Open Generali de Strasbourg winner, Georgia Hall, at 2 under par, 211.
