The Tree of Tales (Story IV): Don’t hold it it- Forgive & Forget Joy and Abby were the best of friends all throughout school. They were always spending time together. So much so that people thought they might have been sisters! They stood up for one another and looked out for each other. But one day, when Joy was over at Abby’s house, she accidentally left house door open and Abby’s cat ran out and into the bushes. Joy was shocked, quickly the cat had dashed out and was now nowhere to be seen. When Abby came out of the room she saw Joy’s shocked and scared expression and knew something was wrong. Joy told her everything and Abby did not say a word. She just rushed out to look for the cat. After hours and hours of searching, they did find Abby’s cat lazing about in a neighbours backyard a few houses down the road. Abby was glad but she was very angry with Joy for being so careless. No matter how many times Joy tried to explain that it was an accident and she truly did not mean to leave the door open, Abby would not listen. All of Joys’ pleas for forgiveness fell on deaf ears. 73
Gradually the girls stopped talking and would not even greet each other. Their friends and family told them to try and make up. After the cat had been eventually found and no harm was done. But, neither girl was willing to extend an olive branch to the other. After months and months of staying angry at Joy, Abby awoke one day to a sudden realization. Ever since she had stopped talking to Joy she had changed. She still got good grades at school and had other friends she spoke to. • But she was always feeling an anger inside her all the time. • She would snap and lose her “cool” at the smallest of things. • She felt as if something was eating away at her from the inside. So instead of continuing this fight, Abby approached Joy and told her that she not only accepted her apology, but she too was sorry for having stayed mad and angry at her this long. She understood that Joy did not leave the door open on purpose and that she did not want to be angry at Abby any longer. The girls hugged and to this day they remain friends. 74

None of us are perfect my friends. We all make mistakes and intentionally or unintentionally we land up hurting somebody else. Learn to forgive others for their mistakes and forget the matter. The only thing worse than being hurt by someone, is holding in resentment and hatred towards the person who hurt you. That resentment will grow like a thorny plant in your soul and prick you every day. Here are some ways to understand forgiveness and learning to forgive others, just as they would forgive us- If someone has hurt you, pretending you are fine or OK does not work. Tell the person who has hurt you that they have done so. Do not ignore it. Make a CHOICE to forgive and remain ‘cool’ rather than being angry or hot-headed. Remember, when someone has hurt you, the power to CHOOSE TO FORGIVE lies within you. 76
