The Tree of Tales (Story I): The Magic of Non-quitters Joanne was a wonderful lady who was going through some very dark times. She was a writer who loved to write about new worlds and new adventures. But writing alone would not have sufficed in this world. She had an incredible idea for a book. However, before she could start penning her thoughts down, her mother passed away and she was dejected. She could not pull herself out of this sadness. So, she decided to venture to a new country to teach English and maybe complete her book. However, things did not go as planned and Joanne got married to a man she was deeply in love with. Unfortunately, the marriage fell apart and Joanne was left jobless and penniless, with no marriage and a little baby girl to feed and support. Joanne had no job and no money, but she did not quit even for a moment. She would sit in small cafes and write down the story of Harry that she had in mind while her baby slept. After many days of hard work, Joanne completed her first book, but her troubles were far from over. She would send the manuscript to different publishers so that they may publish her story. Unfortunately, Joanne got turned down not once, or twice but 12 times! 5

Sad, dejected and feeling as if all was lost, Joanne yet made an effort to send her story to a 13th publisher. Miraculously, the 13th publisher loved her story and agreed to publish it. But he really wasn’t really hopeful about the response this novel would get. However, Joanne’s talent, conviction, and love for writing proved him wrong. Today, Joanne Kathleen Rowling has sold millions of copies of her books that have amounted to more than $20 million. The Harry Potter series earned fame and accolades, was made into a movie franchise and the books were translated into more than 73 languages. J K Rowling’s story is an inspiration and a lesson to us all. A lesson to never give up, no matter how many times we fail. After all, failures teach us what we are doing wrong, so that we may correct those mistakes and succeed. Joanne Kathleen Rowling taught us that there is indeed a magic in the world. A magic that will work for you if you truly believe in yourself and never give up your hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Joanne Rowling J.K. Rowling was born in Chipping Sodbury on 31st July 1965. She is a British author and Screenwriter best known for her seven books 'Harry Potter' Children's book series. This Children's fantasy novel become an international hit and she became star in 1999. She also published a crime novel 'Cuckoo Calling' under the pen name Robert Galbraith in 2013. 6

Respect Life, Respect Living Beings Sometimes, it does not take money, power and prestige to become well known. These things act as a means to attain humility and respect for all human life. A businessman once saw his driver grinning from ear to ear. He asked him what the matter was. The driver replied that he had just seen JRD Tata driving his own car. The man enquired what the big deal in that way. To this, the driver replied, “Sir, I saw JRD Tata and reflexively waved at him. He saw me and actually waved back!!” Did you know? After the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, Ratan Tata not only visited the family members of all the 80 victims who were affected in the attack, but also took full responsibility for the education of the victim's children, the medical facility for the entire family and even waivered the loans (no matter the amount) pending on any of the victims or their families. In 2011, Ratan Tata announced a contest to spark innovation. He decided to award the best-failed idea! This was done so that he could impress on his people the importance of trying and failing because he believed that the failure was the gold mine for his company. The Tree of Tales (Story II): A Cleaner Named Dorothy Jane was a conscientious girl who worked hard at her studies. She aced every exam and the blue- eyed girl of her teachers. One day, Jane’s class was given an on-the-spot quiz related to their everyday studies. As always, Jane breezed through all the questions and was happy she would get a cent percent result. However, just as that thought crossed her mind, she realised she might have spoken too soon. Jane had reached the last question in her paper and was stumped. The question was not a part of her everyday syllabus, but at the same time was very much a part of her everyday life. The teacher had simply asked the students the name of the lady who came in to clean their classrooms every morning and evening. Everyone had seen her and at time even spoken to her, but Jane, for the life of her, could not remember her name. She felt miserable about knowing all the answers, save this one. Dejected she handed in her paper to the class teacher, with the last question left blank. As the teacher 13

collected everyone's paper she smiled to herself. Everyone had left the last question blank. The students started talking amongst each other and finally one was brave enough to ask the teacher whether the last question was important. The teacher replied, “Students, that was the most important question of all! Throughout your life, you will meet people, people who are older than you, younger than you, smarter than you, richer or poorer than you. No matter what their background, each person is important and commands your attention. It is your responsibility to give them this care and attention, even if it just to learn their name and say ‘hello’!” We are always being nice to our friends and those we admire. But our true test of being a good human being comes from how we treat those whom we consider lesser than us. TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT AND KINDNESS. 14

Losing Gracefully In every race, every competition, every test there are always those who win or succeed and those who may lose. But, losing or failing at something does not make us lesser in any way. It just means we have to try harder next time and learn from our failed attempts. While winning feels amazing, failing feels terrible. But, losing and making a scene about it is always in poor taste. Remember that someone else won, only because they, might have been better than you. So instead of ridiculing the other person, or feeling bad for yourself, you must accept that the winner was better than you, congratulate him and aim to rectify your shortcomings. You must focus on giving your best and not on the end result. With every game, every sport, you play, always be prepared for both- winning or losing. Understand the importance and the value of being a good sportsman. Ask yourself and be objective to understand the reason behind why you may have lost. 15

Let's read on to understand how to become a good sportsman and imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship. SPORTSMANSHIP Sportsmanship is when you are following the rules and being kind and respectful to others whether you win or lose. Sportsmanship means:  Shaking hands with the other team, even if you lose  Congratulating somebody if they do a good job  Being honest and not cheating  Being kind and not taunting or name-calling  Having a positive attitude even if you lose  Not bragging if you win the competition  Understanding how the other person is feeling if they lose  Using your coping skills if you get angry during the game  Giving positive feedback to your teammates  Learning how to listen to feedback from others without getting upset  Accepting the results if you lose  Showing respect to anyone who gets injured 16

Here is a fun yoga activity you can try to help you calm down and become a better sportsman and individual. CALM DOWN YOGA FOR KIDS I am strong. Use your strength to catch tricky waves. I am kind. Stretch high and spread kindness all around. I am brave. Be brave and fearless as you fly down the ski run I am friendly. Stretch like a dog wagging its tail. I am wise. Be a wise owl perched on a tree branch. 17

The Tree of Tales (Story III): The Burnt Toast Jack was a naughty boy who was always up to mischief. His parents worked long and hard to put Jack and his younger sister through school. While Jack knew that both his parents had to work, he never understood how much his schooling, happiness, everyday life depended on their working. If ever his mom was late, Jack would start grumbling about how he was hungry and mom wasn’t home yet to feed him dinner. Jack’s father pitched in to help his wife where ever he could, but Jack would still grumble. One day, as they sat down to dinner, Jack’s mom placed the food on the table and placed some burnt toast alongside it. Without so much as raising an eyebrow, Jack’s father picked up the toast and buttered it. He continued talking to his little daughter and ate the burnt toast. Jack was very confused why his father had not mentioned the burnt toast to his wife. After dinner, Jack’s mom cleared the table and told her husband, “I’m sorry dear, the toast got burnt today.” Jack’s father replied, “Are you kidding? I love burnt toast!” 22

This exchange confused Jack even further. When his father came to room to tuck him in, he asked him, “Dad, why did you not tell mom that the toast was burnt? Why did you just eat it quietly?” Jack’s father replied, “Son, your momma put in a hard day's work today and I could tell she was really tired. In spite of that, she made us dinner. It was not right to add to her troubles when it was just burnt toast. After all burnt toast never hurt anyone, did it?” Jack now understood that no one is perfect. It is important to accept the other person for their good as well as bad qualities alike. We must enjoy the similarities and respect the differences so that the relationship nurtures into a lasting bond. 23

Mirror and Water Image of Alphabets: MIRROR IMAGE In mirror image the right side of an object appears on the left side and vice versa. The mirror image of alphabets are given below: It is easy to find the mirror of an alphabet and numbers but to find out mirror image of time shown in a clock is quiet tricky. When you see the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock in the mirror you will see a different time. Let us discuss simple trick to know the mirror image of time in the clock. suppose the clock is showing time 5:25, now to find out the mirror image of time 5.25 in the clock , we have to subtract the time 5.25 from 12.00 hrs and we will get the time 6.35. Hence, the mirror image of clock showing time 5.25 is the clock showing time 6.35. Original Clock Mirror Image 31

WATER IMAGE The reflection of an object into the water is its water image. In water image, the left and right side of an object remains same, there is no change in the position. Hence, the water image of clock showing time 5.25 is the clock showing time 1.05. Original Clock Water Image 32
