I am Jason and like most of you reading this story, I too am in grade VII. What I am about to share with you is a small incident that took place a few months back at school. Now, before I get to the incident, I need you to understand that my class and group of friends are a specially rowdy bunch of kids. We aren’t mean or rude, but being naughty and getting into trouble always seems to come easy to us. Sometimes, some of us have crossed that line and been disrespectful or hurtful to someone else. But not Arya! Arya was a soft spoken kind-of-nerdy girl in my 90
class. No matter how everyone else behaved, Arya was always polite, proper and quiet. She never talked back to the teacher, she never made fun of anyone in our class and she would never be mean to anyone. To be honest, most of us thought she was weird. But, one fine day, I decided to ask her why she was always so polite, and why she never behaved like the rest of us 12 year olds. What Arya said that day, changed my life a bit. Arya said, “Mother taught me a very important thing. She asked me if I like to get respect from others? Would you like to be respected by your friends and peers Jason?” I obviously said, “Who doesn’t!” “Well then Jason, you get what you give. If you can show respect to others, and not just your friends but people you do not know, people whom you may not agree with, then they will in turn respect you.” Such a simple thought- if you want to be respected in the world, learn to respect others first! 91
You may Dislike or Disagree, But Never Disrespect Let’s see if you can spot the simple differences between disliking someone, disagreeing with them and disrespecting them. You think maths is horrible! ________________________________. You look at your friend’s new haircut and think it is bad!!! What was she thinking! ________________________________. You think the school’s policy of having a full day of school on Saturday is just wrong ________________________________. Your friend loves to read, but you would rather watch the movies _ _______________________________. You pushed your little sister and yelled at her because she took your phone ________________________________. You rolled your eyes and walked away from your mother when she was scolding you for not cleaning your room ______________________________. Dislike Disagree Disrespect 92
There are hundreds and thousands of people on the planet and each person is different. Some may like maths, while other love sports. You may also not like every person you meet. Very often we have disagreements with people. We might not agree to their point of view, while they may think our thinking is wrong. While it is ok to dislike or even disagree with someone, it is WRONG to disrespect them. Always remember that if you do not like someone or do not agree with them, that is your point of view and someone else might not like or agree with you too. You both are allowed to have your own opinions, just as long as you do not disrespect them. Disrespecting a friend, an elder, your parent, teacher, animal, plant, property is wrong and reflects poorly on your behavior and attitude. If you respect others, they too will respect you. You will only get as you give. Do you know that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children has written down some rights that every child in this world is entitled to. UN Convention on the Rights of the Child 'Rights' are things that every child should have or be able to do. All children have the same rights. These rights are listed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Almost every country has agreed to these rights. All the rights are connected to each other, and all are equally important. Sometimes, we have to think about the rights in terms of what is the best for children in a situation, and what is critical to life and protection and exercise your rights. 93
