May 26, 2021 6:30 – 11:30 PM BREAKAWAY 221 NEWBURY STREET DANVERS, MA 01923

THIS EVENT IS MADE POSSIBLE IN PART BY FUNDING FROM NSMHA’s History Founded by private citizens of East Boston, Chelsea, Winthrop, and Revere, Massachusetts in 1959, North Suffolk Mental Health began with a mission of providing mental health services to individuals, and especially children, in these relatively under-served communities. It operated first as a Child Guidance Center in 1963, then grew into a Community Mental Health Center from the 1960’s through the 1970’s as Federal and State policies provided less institutional care and more support for community-based services. North Suffolk continued to grow in the number and types of services through the 1980s and 1990s to become one of the largest providers in the state. Today, North Suffolk Mental Health touches the lives of more than 10,000 people a year. Our staff of 900 assists families, children and individuals in 4 clinics, 38 residences and 74 programs. NSMHA’s Mission North Suffolk helps achieve independence by providing a wide variety of treatment and rehabilitation services, by intervening as early as possible, by promoting prevention and education, and by participating in training and research. Addiction Services NSMHA offers a variety of Addiction Treatment and Recovery Support Services for adults and adolescents experiencing drug and/or alcohol misuse, as well as individuals and families affected by addiction. NSMHA provides: Outpatient Addiction Services; Residential Addiction Treatment Programs; Recovery Support Services; and, Adolescent Addiction Treatment Services.

THE THINK OF MICHAEL FOUNDATION Our mission at The Think of Michael Foundation is simple; to serve and support families and individuals struggling with substance use disorder. The Think of Michael Foundation identified a real need that exists with people transitioning from detox and/or treatment to a sober house. Our goal is to provide access to aftercare and sober house living to those that need and want it. Many people do not have a job or the funds to take advantage of sober house living which can be a critical component of their recovery – one that is not covered by insurance. A sober living house provides the structure and support necessary for them to transition to a life of sobriety and keeps them from returning to an environment that may have contributed to their disorder. The Foundation has established a network of clinicians and recovery coaches who refer individuals to us that they feel can truly benefit from sober house living. Each individual submits a letter in which they share their background and why they believe a stay at a sober house will be beneficial to them. The cost per month for a sober house typically ranges from $600 to $900. Our goal is to cover this expense for as many individuals as possible. Each year, the Foundation conducts various events aimed at raising awareness and eliminating the stigma associated with addiction. This year’s highlights include: A Think of Michael 5K Road Race that raised money for subsidizing the Foundation’s sober house program and also served as an opportunity for teenagers to fulfill their community service obligations. Co-sponsoring the annual “Night of Hope” which attracts hundreds of people from Lynnfield and the surrounding communities for a walk, candlelight vigil and night of sharing of experiences, strength, and hope. The Foundation’s annual “Christmas at the Ruth Kelley House” which is home to fourteen mothers in recovery and their twenty-eight children. With the Red Sox Foundation and others, we provide gifts and a festive dinner to make certain that they enjoy the holiday. Donating $10,000 to the Gavin Foundation to serve an immediate critical need for sober house placement. Supporting a Friendsgiving Celebration at Recovery on the Harbor and a basketball tournament for individuals in recover. As we move into our fifth year, the Think of Michael Foundation will continue to subsidize sober housing but also expand supportive services. With your support and generosity, we can continue to make a difference.

THE THINK OF MICHAEL FOUNDATION 2022 MICHAEL V. DALTON AWARD RECIPIENTS Annually, The Think of Michael Foundation recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to addressing substance use disorder. This year’s award recipients are truly making a difference in the lives of so many people and as such deserve our recognition and gratitude. Congratulations to Katie and Joe. Katie O’Leary Katie serves as Director of Recovery Support Services for North Suffolk Mental Health Association. Growing up in Charlestown Katie O’Leary never thought she’d one day struggle with addiction and later become an influential figure in the world of recovery services. Between alcohol and opiates Katie struggled with addiction for about 8 to 10 years. But in January 2011, Katie entered treatment for the last time and has been sober ever since. It was two years into her recovery while she was receiving recovery services from North Suffolk Mental Health Association (NSMHA) when Katie met NSMHA’s Kim Hanton. In 2013, Hanton suggested Katie should look at a career in helping others get and stay sober. During her last decade of work in recovery services O’Leary said advocating and expanding the Drug Court system has been a legacy she feels most proud of. Katie has said that, “Expanding the Drug Court is the most important piece to me just because it really minimized the authoritative gap between the probation officer, the judge, and the participant who was receiving services. We currently have six drug courts. We are in Chelsea, Lynn Malden, Charlestown, Dorchester and I have Recovery Coaches in all of those courts. Katie is consistently the voice of recovery and recovery support at North Suffolk Mental Health Association and the communities they serve.”

Joe LaFratta Joe served for a number of years as an Assistant Deputy Chief U.S. Probation Officer for the District of Massachusetts. He was honored by the U.S. Attorney in 2021 for his community outreach and service. During his time as a Federal probation officer, he established a reputation as someone who deeply cared about helping individuals struggling with substance use disorder. When the founder of Recovery Works, an organization affiliated with the Massachusetts General Hospital, was recruiting a board of directors, she asked a Federal judge whom he might recommend. Immediately, he offered up Joe as someone who would be a great addition. The judge was correct. Joe joined the Board of Recovery Works and has been instrumental in the success that the Program has enjoyed. He serves as a member of the Recovery Works Executive Board and as the Director of Mentors & Program Outreach. Joe focuses on finding individuals with substance use disorder meaningful employment while supporting them through mentoring, training and counseling. Joe is licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions as a Mental Health Counselor. Former Michael V.
