IntroductionThe Lone Star High School Sports Medicine program is growing with an increasing number ofteams and athletes. With these increasing numbers, it is difficult to provide quality medicalcoverage to every team at Lone Star High School. The Student Athletic Trainer (SAT) acts as anextension of the Athletic Trainer and assists in providing medical coverage to the athletes andteams at Lone Star. This can be a large responsibility for the SAT.We expect the Student Athletic Trainer to be able to follow the rules and guidelines, performfirst aid, wear the appropriate uniform, and to maintain good grades in the classroom. Weexpect the SAT to assist when necessary, and to be a good representative of Lone Star HighSchool and the Frisco Independent School District.The SAT will work under the direct supervision of the Licensed Athletic Trainer (LAT) on staff.He/She will assist with all day-to-day duties and activities in the athletic training room.This handbook was designed to help develop discipline and offer guidance about the program.This handbook does not replace the Lone Star High School Student Handbook, nor is thishandbook all-encompassing about the Sports Medicine program. It is the responsibility of theStudent Athletic Trainer to read, comprehend, and be familiar with all the policies in thehandbook. Page | 2
Mission of the Sports Medicine ProgramThe mission of the Lone Star Sports Medicine program is to provide quality medical care to theathletes at LSHS by using the most current techniques in prevention, treatment, andrehabilitation in the sports medicine field.This program will help students learn responsibility for their work and to be held accountable fortheir actions. This program will also provide a social forum for students to interact with otherstudents and professionals in a variety of settings that will be both educational and fun. Goals and ObjectivesThe goals and objectives of the Sports Medicine program are as follows: ● To meet the medical coverage needs of the Lone Star HS athletic programs ● To produce students who excel in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities ● To provide educational experiences in a variety of settings ● To promote Lone Star High School at all times ● To provide students with an opportunity to enhance skills in the sports medicine field ● To have fun with friends and work towards a common goal. Athletic Training Student Dress CodeYour personal appearance and hygiene is a direct reflection of your personality and the Sports Medicine Program. Youwill be expected to always be within dress code and behave in a professional manner. Athletic Training is an AlliedHealth Profession and professional appearance and hygiene must be maintained.As a Student Athletic Trainer you will primarily work in three settings – practices, home games and away games. Usethe following guidelines to determine the proper attire for the event coverage. 1. Practices a. Pants: Wind pants, slacks b. Shirts: Any Lone Star t-shirt that fits in school dress code c. Shorts: School colored appropriate shorts d. Hats/Caps: Are permitted at practices and in the field house only. 2. Home Games: a. Pants: Khaki pants and or shorts as determined by Staff AT. (No Capris). You must be dressed alike when working together with another SAT. b. Shirts: A navy school issued Sports Medicine shirt c. Hats/Caps: May be worn for outside events only and must be a Lone Star High School hat/cap. 3. Away games: a. Pants: Khaki pants and or shorts as determined by Staff AT. (No Capris). You must be dressed alike when working together with another SAT. b. Shirts: A gray school issued Sports Medicine shirt c. Hats/Caps: May be worn for outside events only and must be a Lone Star High School hat/cap.Key points to remember: ● Student Athletic Trainers working together must always be dressed alike. Get together and decide on clothing before the event occurs. ● The Athletic Trainer will make final decisions about inappropriate clothing and will make final decisions to wear pants or shorts and what color. The Athletic Trainer may also decide on what shirts to wear. ● Tennis shoes are required; flip flops and sandals will not be permitted at games or practices. ● BE PROFESSIONAL – you are a reflection of Lone Star High School and the Sports Medicine Program. ● Absolutely no jeans will be worn for any game or practice coverage! Athletic Lettering RequirementsYou will be awarded a letter jacket after one year of service provided that you have met or exceeded expectationsaccording to the handbook. This is left up to the discretion of Staff AT’s. A variety of factors will be used to determineif expectations have been met. Athletic Training Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following are just a few of the many duties and responsibilities of the SAT. All of these will be under directsupervision of the Athletic Trainer. ● Administer treatments under the direction of the LAT ● Tape athletes ● Administer first aid ● Assist with record keeping ● Set up sports medicine equipment for practices and events ● Clean and put away sports medicine equipment after practices and events ● Assist in loading and unloading sports medicine equipment for home and away events ● Assist in rehabilitation of athletes ● Keep the athletic training room clean at all times ● Learn as much as possible. Observe injury evaluations and ask questions at appropriate times ● Know your athletic training room. Learn the location of all equipment and supplies ● Report all injuries to the Athletic Trainer immediately ● Any other duties as assigned by the Athletic TrainerThe following are guidelines to follow: ● Student Athletic Trainers must check in with Staff AT on a weekly basis ● Do not administer treatments, especially those involving modalities, to anyone without permission from the Athletic Trainer or when the Staff AT is not present. ● Book bags and personal belonging are not to be left lying around the training room. Use the cubbies provided. ● SAT’s are prohibited to talk to anyone about the injury status to anyone except the coach of the sports involved. No friends, press, teachers, or parents ● All student information in the athlete’s medical file is confidential. It is against the law to read or distribute this information under any circumstance ● The athletic training room is not a lounge. Keep friends and athletes out unless they are getting treatment or rehab. Page | 5
Academic GuidelinesTo participate in athletic training at Lone Star High School, academic standards have been set by the UniversityInterscholastic League (UIL), the governing body of Texas High School Athletics.A grade of 70% or higher must be achieved in all classes during each reporting period. If you are found to have agrade below 70% during any grading period, you will be declared ineligible. Another grade check will be done at thethree week progress check. If your grade is 70% or higher in the class that was in question, you will regain eligibility. Ifyou are still not passing at the three week grade check, you will remain ineligible for the rest of the six week gradingperiod. You are strongly advised to attend tutorials, outside of practice times, during the time of ineligibility to helpget your grade to passing. Ineligible students will not be permitted to attend any games associated with the athleticteams but you will be expected to attend practices.If you are declared ineligible for any two consecutive grading periods, the Athletic Trainer will have grounds to dismissyou from the Sports Medicine program. Staff ATs will be monitoring all grades of student involved in the program. Itwill be communicated through one on one text message or private meeting when students are in danger of failing.Tutorials will be scheduled before or after school according to practice times and will not be excused unless thestudent is currently failing the class. Late Arrival/Early Dismissal GuidelinesStudents who are eligible to have late arrival or early dismissal WILL NOT be allowed to do so during the fall semester.While you may be enrolled in the class you will be required to attend all practices according to the schedule as latearrival or early dismissal will not be a valid excuse. In the spring semester, a conference will be held between thestudent athletic trainer and Staff in order for guidelines to be set regarding check-in times, grades, and secondary helpfor the training program. Please DO NOT assume that you will be given a free 100 for a grade just because you areenrolled in the class and football season is completed. SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDELINESThis policy provides guidance for students use of social media, which should be broadly understood for purposes of thispolicy to include blogs, wikis, microblogs, message boards, chat rooms, electronic newsletters, online forums, socialnetworking sites, and other sites and services that permit users to share information with others in acontemporaneous manner. This also includes text messages, snap chats, tweets and any other form of social media.Student athletic trainers will be required to add/follow Staff athletic trainers so appropriate monitoring can be upheld.If policy is violated by the student, the following will occur:1st Offense: Verbal Warning and counseling2nd Offense: Two game suspension and meeting with parents3rd Offense: Immediate dismissal from program Page | 6
Dismissal from the Sports Medicine ProgramThe Sports Medicine Program operates similar to all athletic teams at Lone Star High School. The Athletic Trainer actsas the Coach and you are the athlete. We work together to provide daily coverage to the athletic teams. In order forthe best medical care to be given, the daily operations must run smooth. At no time will this program or studentathlete be placed in jeopardy because of your actions or behaviors as a student athletic trainer. Grounds for dismissalinclude but are not limited to: ● Disobeying the guidelines of this handbook ● Continuous irresponsibility ● Poor academic history (ineligibility) ● Failure to cooperate and work effectively with other student aides or athletes ● Continuous disciplining by the Athletic Trainer ● Verbal or physical abuse to any of the athletes, coaches, students or staff ● Any disrespect to the Athletic Trainer ● Any out of school incidents (arrests, fights, vandalism, etc.) that result in ISS, suspension or reassignment to another campus (SOC). ● Failure to attend practice and games-The Athletic Trainer has the final decision about the dismissal of any Athletic Training Student from the SportsMedicine Program. Sport and Team AssignmentsSports assignments are not based on seniority. Assignments are based on need, Athletic Trainer choice, academiceligibility, experience level, coach’s request and lastly, student athletic trainer preference. ● Varsity sports will get preferential treatment as well as sports with high incidence of injury rate. ● Assigned students will cover practice and events ● You must report to the training room with adequate time to prepare for the practice or event ● You must arrive at the practice site with needed supplies at least 5 minutes before the scheduled start time ● You will not leave the practice site unless there is an emergency or you are told to do so by the Athletic Trainer ● You are responsible for introducing yourself to the visiting team’s athletic trainer and providing them with assistance and needed items. This also includes checking with them after the event has finished. ● When traveling to an away site, locate the athletic training room and meet the staff and students that will be covering the event. ● You should carry current emergency contact information with you at all times. Attendance/Grades GuidelinesAll student trainers will need to sign up for an athletic training period if their schedule allows. Grades for this class willbe given based on attendance and performance both during the athletic period and their outside of schoolcommitment. Student will be required to attend 3 out of 5 practices in order to attend games. If a student cannotattend a practice then he/she may attend an alternate practice (morning, afternoon, another sport) if arranged withStaff athletic trainer. Traveling GuidelinesPer FISD guidelines all student trainers must ride to and from all school sponsor events in a school vehicle. This meansstudents cannot be dropped off by a parent in order to work an activity nor may the student leave with a parent earlyfrom a school activity. Student will be given a leave time and an arrival time. If the student misses those times they willnot be allowed to travel to the game and will have to make other arrangements. Page | 8
