STEPHANIE CRIDER LAST VIEW Editor OH, MAMA. I love my mama. She’s funny and quirky and a bit sassy sometimes. You never have to guess what she is thinking. And when it comes to family, you’ve never met a more generous soul. She’s had my back my whole life. When I was four, she went and got my big wheel back from the punk down the street who stole it. The first thing she taught me how to cook was macaroni and cheese with peas and spam. I was so proud serving that up for dinner for my dad and brother when she had to work late. That meal may well have kept me from starving in college. Later, she showed me how to make more respectable meals like chicken potpie and pasta with homemade marinara sauce. She taught me how to iron, which I never do, but could if I needed to, thanks to her. When I broke her favorite ceramic Santa in a pillow fight with my brother and clumsily glued it back together, she acted like she didn’t notice even though it probably broke her heart a little. She called me on my bad choices in high school, always pushing me to do better, to be better. My mom saw goodness in me I didn’t know I had and possibilities for me that I never could have imagined. When I had babies of my own, she came each time (she literally flew halfway around the world once to welcome a grandbaby into the world) and taught me the business of being a mom. She’s cried with me and prayed over my children with me through the years. As I navigate the season of sending my children into the world as young adults, I don’t know how she did it with such confidence in an era with no cellphones, facetime or location-sharing technology. But if she was scared or worried, I never knew it. It’s taken me this long to truly appreciate her mom super powers and the battles she fought on behalf of me and my brother. We put her through the wringer with crazy shenanigans to the point I’m sure she wonders how we lived to see adulthood. Now watching my mama as she putters around the house and relaxes among the flowers on her porch, her Goldendoodle at her side and the soft tinkle of windchimes on the breeze, I am happy for her. And so thankful. To moms everywhere – Happy Mother’s Day.22 MAY 2018
