STEPHANIE CRIDER Editor “When people eat my foodt, hteheloy vcean.”feel12 JANUARY 2018 Judith Cage is passionate about food and about people. She always has been. Maybe you saw her on Food Network’s “Chopped” in 2013. Perhaps you’ve eaten at one of her four local eateries or been to an event she’s catered or a speech she’s given. Maybe you’ll see her in the screen credits of a movie due to be released this year. When opportunity knocks, she flings the door open and pounces. As a young girl in Chicago, when Cage cooked dinner for her younger siblings, she knew she enjoyed it, but she never dreamed she’d build a successful career centered around nourishing others. Today, that’s exactly what she does. She owns four restaurants and a catering company and has no plans to slow down. In fact, she is just getting started. When Cage, a.k.a. Chef Judy, was 16, she told her mom she wanted to join the military as a cook. It took some convincing, but her mom agreed, and just after graduation, at the tender age of 17, Cage joined the Army. Her first duty station was Fort Drum, New York. “I went in with so much energy,” Cage said. “They had to send someone to compete with the U.S. Army team at the Olympics of cooking. They sent me.” Because she was so young – just 18 – she trained under another chef in the entrée round. “We won second place,” Cage recalled. “I still have the medal.” Years later when she came to Fayetteville, Cage took a catering chef job at Fayetteville State University where she flourished and was promoted to production manager. “But I knew there was more,” Cage said. So, she started her own catering business – Let Me Cater to You. That was nine years ago. It was a little crazy at first – okay, a lot – but there was no turning back. “I didn’t have the facilities I needed, so I rented them. I worked out of church kitchens and rec. centers,” she said. “And when I saved up

Although full moons occur roughly every 29.5 days, blue moons are much more rare. According to Space.com, a blue moon happens on average once every 2.7 years. A blue moon has nothing to do with the color of this celestial orb, but rather it refers to when there are four full moons in a season of three months instead of three full moons. The fourth moon is referred to as the blue moon. Occasionally, two full moons appear during the same month. This will next happen in January 2018. January 1st will feature the full Wolf moon. At the end of the month, on January 31, sky-gazers can view the second full moon, or the blue moon. JANUARY 2018 21
