avoid synthetic drugs altogether, many times they are necessary. I know from the personal experience of a longtime friend how dangerous uncontrolled high blood pressure can be. It is not advisable for anyone to stop taking high blood pressure medications and try a natural product instead. However, with a doctor’s supervision, improved lifestyle choices and the use of powerful botanicals like olive leaf and grape seed can help reduce one’s medication dosage. Likewise, if you are pre-hypertensive, such choices can delay or avoid the need for prescription drugs altogether. Olive Leaf Olive oil and extract from olive leaves are good medicine for your heart. Olive oil is full of beneficial, healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants. Adding olive oil to your diet can reduce your risk of heart disease by lowering levels of bad LDL cholesterol and raising good HDL cholesterol levels. As told by author Bumgardner in his 2019 book, A Brief History of Walking, one of the earliest walking groups was the German Black Forest Wandervere started in 1864 ― still around today and one of the world’s oldest. In fact, Bumgardner goes on to reveal that during the Pedestrian Age in Europe and America from 1860 to 1903, walkers made more money per race than today’s basketball players, equivalent to 100 years of the salary of that time. The Father of modern pedestrianism, Edward Weston, walked for sport in the 1860s and 70s, winning $10,000 for walking over 500 miles in 25 days. That is over $1 million in today’s money. Although the Athens and London Olympics had walking competitions as early as the 1900s, the first racewalk came to the U.S. in 1911 at Coney Island. By the 1990s, walking had become the most popular exercise in the US, far exceeding any other sport and generating billions of dollars in sales of athletic walking gear. Black Female Leaders Movers, Shakers and Shapers of the Community By Dr. Shanessa Fenner highlighting some past and present prominent Black women leaders in Cumberland County. We Black women are making their mark. They take an in-depth look at these incredible women shape the world we live in and are the and their humanitarian efforts, secrets to success gatekeepers of the Black family. Countless and highlights of their lives. Black women have made enormous strides for their communities. During Black History Month, we are Lisa Scales, Cumberland County Clerk of Superior Court \"Growing up, I can remember my dad always encouraging me to be a kind person, to work to the best of my ability and to be a good law-abiding citizen. He truly believed these attributes would lead you down the path of success. I've never forgotten his words, and I strive to live by them daily. The one thing I have added to his list is to sprinkle it all with prayer,” Scales said of the words of wisdom imparted to her by her father. When asked to share a highlight in her life, the county clerk said, \"Motherhood is truly a remarkable gift and a privilege that I hold very close to my heart. To me, being a mother means to be a positive role model, a continuous cheerleader for every milestone my child experiences, to demonstrate the abundance of unconditional love that has no end, and to cherish the countless priceless memories.\" Regarding her career path of public service, the humble Scales shared, \"The wealth of knowledge that I received from working in county and state government positions has been a true blessing. It has allowed me to supervise, motivate, mentor and lead by example. The lessons of using experienced- backed judgment, having a strong work ethic, and a profound sense of integrity were derived from my 36-plus years of service. These gifts will remain with me for life.\" Peace Shepard Easton, Fayetteville Technical Community College's Women's Basketball Coach Of her coaching career, Easton reflected, \"In coaching, I think I've succeeded so far by being honest and being a players' coach. It helps to be able to relate to athletes and your players. It's hard to guide some things if you haven't had to deal with or experience certain situations. Sometimes athletes need hands- on/hands-off, real, fun, hardcore, reserved, enthusiastic, loving, comfortable/ uncomfortable, noiseless guidance, especially females. Everyone is different and has to be coached differently. These athletes are not the same athletes that we were in the '90s. They are VERY different. Therefore, they require a different approach. Sometimes it's not about how loud you say it, but it's what you say to get through to someone.\" “One of my major highlights of my life,” Easton said, “was being named into the Jacksonville-Onslow County Hall of Fame in 2018. Every sport I played, every game and practice I participated in, everyone I was coached by and everyone who supported me, especially my parents along with every player and game I coached, helped me and is recognized in that award. I am and will forever be grateful for that moment and recognition. It all came full circle that day. Thanks to all; God is good.\" Dr. Shanessa Fenner is the principal of W.T. Dr. Jeannette Council, Cumberland County Board of Commissioners When asked the secret of her success, Council said, \"My secret to success is a collaboration with others. It does not matter who gets the credit as long as the job gets done and the task gets completed.\" Continuing, Council shared what she considers the highlight of her life. \"Other than the birth of my son, the highlight of my career has been many years working as an educator in Cumberland County public schools and as an elected official working toward the fulfillment of mutual goals for the benefit of all citizens of our county.\" Patricia Timmons-Goodson, Retired North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Timmons-Goodson was the first Black woman to serve as a North Carolina Supreme Court Justice. After retiring from the bench, President Barack Obama appointed her to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. She ran for Congress in 2020. \"I went to law school because I always heard people say, ‘You need a lawyer’ when they needed to help, and I wanted to help. I believed that I could make a difference in people's lives.\" Timmons-Goodson understood the problems of Blacks and poor people in their dealings with the justice system and was their advocate and voice. Val Applewhite, Former Fayetteville City Councilwoman Applewhite is a former Fayetteville City Councilwoman and Fayetteville mayoral candidate. She is also an Air Force veteran with more than 25 years of honorable service. She survived the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. As a passionate councilwoman, she facilitated partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce and local, county, state and congressional representatives on economic policy, job creation and military affairs. She also made progress in improving Fayetteville's mass transit and believed in engaging the military community at Fort Bragg more into the Fayetteville community. Mary McAllister, Former Cumberland County Board of Commissioners (deceased) McAllister, an elementary teacher for 21 years, was the first Black to serve as the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners chairman. She was also the first Black woman elected member of the Cumberland County Legislative Delegation in the North Carolina General Assembly. While an advocate for Fayetteville State University and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities, she founded Operation Sickle Cell Incorporated in May 1971. She desired all citizens to participate fully at the table of equality, regardless of their gender or ethnicity. In conclusion, I give you these six exemplary examples of \"Black Girl Magic\" at its best in recognition of Black History Month, a national observance held each February. Initially proposed in 1969 by black educators and the Black United Students at Kent State University, formal celebration first began a year later in 1970. A mere six years later, backed by President Ford, Black History Month was celebrated nationwide. President Ford stated that citizens should \"seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.\" Women's View Magazine celebrates the accomplishments of these and countless other Black females of Fayetteville ― past and present. 2 0 2 2 F E B R UA RY | 13
