Along with teachers, Guzman is also inspired by great artists of the past and present. She is a big fan of the 20th-century French painter and sculptor Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet, who embraced an idealistic approach to aesthetics, a so- called \"low art\" mentality. He eschewed traditional beauty standards in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. He is perhaps best known for founding the art movement, Art Brut, and collection of works, Collection de l' Art Brut. However, the works of modern artist Julie Mehretu motivated Guzman's current exhibition. She explained that Mehretu's art style is Abstract Expressionism which includes cartography and map making and has social/political undertones. Traveling broadened her perspective, something for which she is thankful. While in China, Guzman became more conscious of her identity. This awareness first stemmed from \"being in a place so different from where she was from\" and soon morphed into appreciation. Boundaries Define your boundaries early, hold them consistently and excel within them. If you are unavailable at particular times due to family obligations, clarify that early on. However, when you are present at work, be present and excel. Doing this consistently helps to reinforce your commitment to your family, but also reinforces your work ethic and commitment to the company. Stay Connected If you decide that it is not the right time for you to reenter the workforce, explore options that will keep you connected to the industry and keep your skills up to date. Such activities include participating in industry conferences, attending networking events and getting new certifications. These endeavors help keep you relevant and to stay abreast of developments that will come into play when you are ready to return to work. Starting off with short contracts or part-time work gives you an opportunity to work through any kinks with child care, school pickup and drop-off, homework and other activities that require your energy and attention off the clock.

My first job was working at the Bordeaux movie theater in Fayetteville. I was there when Jaws hit the big screen, and as a perk, employees got to see it before the general public. My position was in the box off ice selling tickets and concessions. I made such fun memories there! ~Karen Bullard The craziest job I've ever had was as a secret shopper, although some may say that secret shopping goes hand-in-hand with what I do now for a living ― running a model and talent agency. However, being a secret shopper was a little different as it would break my heart when I had to return the items to be paid for the assignment. Sure, I could have walked into the store and picked out things that I didn't like, but who really would want to do that? So, silly me would go in and pick out all my favorite items, though unable to keep them! ~Jennifer Baker After both of my boys left for college, I found myself in a new season of life. I went to work two days a week at Betty Kelly's Gift Shop here in Fayetteville. As all patrons of Betty Kelly's know, wrapping beautiful gift items is their specialty, but unfortunately, gift wrapping was not mine. I would come home and watch YouTube videos at night trying to perfect those tight-creased corners and magnificent bows. After a year and a half, it became evident to anyone who received a Betty Kelly's gift wrapped by me; I was of better use as a gift shop customer and not an employee. But I sure do appreciate the friend ― Francis Morketter ― who took a chance on me. ~Lynne Smith I recently began an actual career in which I can grow, but I had several fun and oddball jobs in my past. The best one that comes to mind is whenever I worked seasonally at Pet Starz off Ramsey Street in North Fayetteville. I loved taking care of all the cute dogs and comforting them while their owners were away. A drearier experience was selling security systems for ADT, walking door to door in neighborhoods that had recent break-ins! ~Chellie Redinbo My father taught me a valuable lesson on how to clean a house properly. Then I cleaned my house for my spending money and disabled people and my church. I was the youngest in my family and didn't have young cousins around either. My job as a preschool teacher in the summers taught me hands-on experience of child development and helped me be a better parent 10 years later. ~Bonnie Patterson 16 | S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 1

Two jobs in one summer at the tender age of 16 confirmed a strong work ethic for me. The hours of 8-12 afforded me the joy of engaging with community children via learning activities/crafts and distributing to-go boxed lunches. Remembering the p.m. hours of 3-12 in a nonair-conditioned towel printing manufacturing building still tempts me today to hum Donna Summer's hit, \"She works hard for the money.\" If you are wondering, yes, I appreciate beautifully printed towels! ~June Hoffler Former jobs of mine before going to work as a career educator include being a cashier at Bojangles, a work-study clerical assistant in the Financial Aid Off ice at Methodist College and two positions while living in Germany: the child development center supervisor for the before-and-after school program, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and an administrative assistant to the U.S. Army Civilian Personnel Officer at United States Army Garrison Stuttgart. ~Alison Shirley I remember a fun job in a sewing plant in Fairmont, North Carolina, back in 1976. I received stacks of finished shirts from the seamstresses. The shirts were wrong-side-out, and I ran a machine that turned them. It was a hanging vacuum box with a hole on each side. I would slide a shirt onto the vacuum machine, and it would suck the sleeves into the machine. Then in one swift, downward motion ― I would pull the shirt off the device, and it would be right-side-out and ready for inspection. I worked on the production, which gave me the incentive to create a rhythm to do my job quickly. ~Wanda Chavis One summer during my teen years, a friend and I took a job at a small restaurant grill on the boardwalk of Atlantic Beach. Making a little money and spending our days on the beach basking in the summer sun sounded great to us! But as it turned out, all we had time to do was work, sleep, wake up and do it all again! ~Terri Nowiski At 16, I worked as a YMCA junior counselor for an overnight ranch camp but spent long days washing the campers' dishes. From here, I worked at a Greek restaurant, burger joint, catering company and leasing agency, where I convinced people to move ASAP. Afterward, I joined the Coast Guard and performed search and rescue, tactical operations, POTUS escorts and life-saving missions ― definitely a step up from washing dishes in a hot desert ranch. Take a stand against Sexual Harassment By Taneisha Kerr W ith the rise of the #METOO movement, workplace propriety and consent have become hot topics. Such subjects have even become the butt of jokes as our society grapples with what’s polite and what’s inappropriate.
