DIY I wanted a water feature in our backyard that Backyard included a waterfall, plants and fish. The sound of Water the waterfall to me is soothing and an attractive Feature element to sit and relax by. My husband knew I wanted one, but as husbands go, sometimes they can just keep By Cynthia Ross | Photography by Isaiah Jones putting a project on the back burner. A few years back, when we had a large pecan tree that met its demise and fell, I felt the setting would be a great place for a pond. So, one weekend when my husband was not home, I decided the time for the pond had come! Fortunately, the surface above and below the fallen tree left the soil pliable, and digging was not as hard as I thought, other than the roots that remained. By the time my husband got home, I had already dug a noticeable area; he knew I was serious. He jumped in to help, but the project still took three months of steady work during the week and on the weekends. Fast forward three years, my backyard pond is established and thriving with fish, aquatic plants and a resident frog. The birds bathe and drink, squirrels balance on the rocks to drink and dragonflies visit — and my husband and I view it all from two rocking chairs on the water’s edge. The round pond measures about 10 by 10, is about three feet deep in the center, holds some 1,500 gallons of water and has an additional shelf about one and a half feet deep. You can build your own pond and save substantial money if you are up for the challenge. Doing your research is the first step for planning, cost, and site. Allow me to walk you through the process. • Size matters Select your site and decide the approximate size and remember that the larger the water feature, the more it will cost. Our DIY backyard pond, including a waterfall, stone perimeter, filtration system and an aerator, cost roughly $3,000 three years ago. • Site selection Pick a somewhat level site that receives at least four to six hours of sun daily. Avoid overhanging trees because of falling debris. Observe the area during rain to see the direction that the site drains. • Site prep Outline the area with paint as a sketch of the finished size desired. I started digging our pond with a shovel and discarded the roots I encountered, but the main advantage of that area was removing a large pecan tree that left a pliable surface and an easy spot for digging. • Considerations One of the hardest parts was the initial removal of the grass.
