By Alison Hurley Y ears ago, I was a member of a wonderful book club. Once our book club disbanded, I missed both the book recommendations and the comradery of book discussions with other literary souls. Soon after, Oprah began her famous book club, and since then, many other celebrities have joined suit. You’ll find no better time than this of social distancing to connect with a virtual book club to find your new read. This month's books come from Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, Good Morning America and Jenna Bush-Hager. In my opinion, nothing is better than relaxing by the water with a good book that you can't and don't have to put down. I hope you’ll find something here you like. Happy Reading! REBECCA SEARLE ― In Five Years Where do you see yourself in five years? What if you found a sneak peek into the future that was utterly different from your hopes and expectations? That chance happens to Dannie, an attorney who has both her professional life and personal life mapped out for the foreseeable future. This story is one of love, friendship, fate, destiny and self-discovery. I was unprepared for the emotional roller coaster this story took me on, and once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. GLENNON DOYLE ― Untamed \"Being human is not hard because you're doing it wrong; it's hard because you're doing it right. You will never change the fact that being human is hard, so you must change your idea that it was ever supposed to be easy.\" I have to admit, I'm not usually a reader of the self-help genre, but after seeing this book all over my social media feed and having it highly recommended by a friend, I decided to give it a try. Untamed is a candid memoir about becoming the best and most authentic version of ourselves. It's about listening to the voice inside us that Doyle calls \"The Knowing.\" I found myself underlining passages and reading aloud to my 18-year-old daughter. Inspirational, funny and candid, each short chapter is a tidbit on relationships, parenting, faith and self-discovery. ELIZABETH WETMORE ― Valentine Set in Texas in 1976, Valentine is told primarily from the view of three women: 14-year-old Gloria, the victim of a rape that sets the tone of the story; Mary Rose, a young mother and wife who helps Gloria; and Corrine, an aging alcoholic recluse trying to get over the death of her husband. Other compelling female characters are woven into the story as well ― like 10-year-old tomboy Deborah, whose mother has abandoned her. Many backstories to this tale include racism and classism, sexual abuse and victim-blaming, male chauvinism and \"good old boy\" mentality, just to name a few. Through those dark elements shines the resilience of the female characters as their lives become intertwined, and they learn to protect themselves and one another. ROBERT KOLKER ― Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family Schizophrenia affects an estimated one in 100 people or more than 3 million people in America, and 82 million people worldwide. However, despite those staggering statistics, misconceptions and mysteries still surround this illness. Hidden Valley Road is a nonfiction look into the lives of the Galvin family. Of their 12 children, six are schizophrenic. The alternating chapters tell the story of the family members and the scientific research on this illness. The book also chronicles the effects on the family members not diagnosed and how the family contributed to learning more about schizophrenia through DNA research and brain scans. Mental health issues affect millions worldwide, and this book is both moving and powerful. Alison Hurley has been an educator for over 18 years, serving as an information specialist, media coordinator, gifted education consultant and regular classroom teacher. She resides in Fayetteville with her husband and two teenage children. 2 0 2 0 J U LY | 5

Although pedestal-style bird baths are attractive, baths closer to the ground tend to attract more birds. Place the birdbath in the shade if possible, to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterward. The All About Birds site also reports that a birdbath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, something irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath's use is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Once birds learn of a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests. PPLLAAYY WWIITTHH FFOORRMM AANNDD SSPPAACCEE Be imaginative with the forms of foods and the spaces of plates to create attractive, sculptural edibles. Food plating can be just as or more artistic than the ingredients. Craving something savory? Thin slices of foods such as pepperoni, ham and even smoked salmon can be folded into delectable \"roses.\" You can make these foodies flowers by cutting refrigerated pizza dough into 3-inch strips and adding your favorite sauce and cheese. Then layer and overlap meat slices on top, roll up and place the dough strips in a muffin tin and bake until set. Garnish with basil leaves for a fresh flourish. Pasta is pliant, so it can be arranged in a variety of ways. Cook long, thin noodles — such as spaghetti or capellini — and plate the noodles into circular \"nests.\" Fill the nests with a sauce of your choice. Then, add sprigs of herbs such as flat-leaf parsley and cilantro for the \"leaves\" and round foods such as meatballs, cherry tomatoes and mozzarella balls for the \"eggs.\" Add an edible flower such as sweet pea, snapdragon or dianthus, and you will have a touch of nature at your dinner table. If you are in the mood for sweets, sheet cakes are entirely blank canvasses for food art. Frost a sheet cake with white icing. This July 4, arrange blueberries and strawberry slices into \"stars\" and stripes for a festive American flag cake that is as patriotic as it is scrumptious. Or, enjoy a bit of the beach in your kitchen by frosting a sheet cake with blue-tinted icing. Spread graham cracker crumbs on half of the frosted cake to create \"sand.\" Add a cantaloupe-pineapple sun, a few store-bought Swedish Fish and chocolate seashells to complete the scene. If you care to invest in food molds, you can create these shaped candies and chocolates yourself to use on cakes or serve separately. Famed chef Jose Andres said, \"Of course food is art! To me, art should be a thrill for all of our senses.\" By adding a dash of fun to recipes, you can experience the sights, tastes, aromas and textures of your meals as never before. So, go ahead ― play with your food. 2 02 02 02 0J UJ ULYLY| | 1111

By Ella Wrenn Thirty plays in 60 minutes? Sounds crazy, but that’s precisely what Cape Fear Regional Theatre’s ACT FAST program promises. The 22 members of the ACT FAST troupe are military spouses, active- duty military personnel or veterans. Under the direction of Nikki Hart (CFRT’s \"Mamma Mia!\" and \"Music City\") and Matthew Jackson (CFRT’s \"The Santaland Diaries\"), the group will undertake the play \"Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind\" by Greg Allen, a collection of 30 short ― sometimes less than a minute ― plays. Performances of the play are highly energetic and participatory. Upon entering, audience members receive a “menu” of the shows, a timer is set and then the group attempts to perform all 30 plays before the timer goes off. The audience determines the order of presentation by yelling out “orders” for which play they want to see next. Over the last three years, CFRT has gained statewide recognition for the success of Passport ― its military outreach program for children of military families. The theater offers Passport for free, thanks to The North Carolina Arts Council and The Rea Charitable Trust. Over eight weeks, participants conceive, write and produce an original play that culminates in a performance for friends and family. With seed money from The Arts Council of Fayetteville of Cumberland County, CFRT launched ACT FAST this spring to expand its Passport series to serve adults. ACT FAST provides a fun and creative way to both build new friendships among military adults and deepen their connection to the broader community by bringing participants off the post for rehearsals and performances. Initially, Dirtbag Ales Brewery & Taproom partnered with CFRT in scheduling performances. Taking shows into nontraditional spaces ― such as CFRT’s 2019 holiday production of \"The Santaland Diaries\" at The Sweet Palette in downtown Fayetteville ― creates economic and marketing momentum for local business partners, as well as attracts a new audience to engage with the theater. With the outbreak of COVID-19 this spring, ACT FAST participants continued to meet online, rehearsing with directors and running lines together in Zoom rooms. Participants and instructors alike found joy and support in gathering and spending time together during the period of isolation. At CFRT, the mission always is to be a place for people to come together, play, grow and be in community. Whether online via Zoom or in person at the theater, you can find more information about CFRT’s programs at www.cfrt.org. Ella Wrenn is the managing director at Cape Fear Regional Theatre. Joining the team in July 2019, Ella and her husband Matthew relocated to Fayetteville from New York City, where her previous administrative credits included “Cagney, The Musical” and “The Other Josh Cohen” off-Broadway. 2 0 2 0 J U LY | 19

A staff report The word summer conjures up many things — but perhaps nothing more so than the beach. According to the United States Lifesaving Association, beach attendance holds at nearly 211 million visitors annually, suggesting that beaches are arguably the most popular spots in the country to unwind and soak up rays. But the popularity of beaches is not exclusive to the United States, and people across the globe have an incentive to make their visits to the beach as eco-friendly as possible. Clean beaches make days lounging on the sand more enjoyable, and well-maintained beaches will remain hotspots for summer fun for decades to come. Avoid the dunes. Dunes do more than just add character and beauty to beaches. Dunes protect coastal properties from sea waves and provide habitats for specific plants and animals. While storm waves can remove sand from dunes and contribute to erosion, human activity, such as walking through dunes instead of utilizing walkovers that carry beachgoers over the dunes, also can track sand away from the dunes. Over time this human activity can lead to beach erosion. Leave nothing behind but a sandcastle. When packing for a day at the beach, pack only those items that you can take with you when the day ends. Bring water in reusable water bottles you might take to campsites, and bring reusable utensils so you won’t have to make many trips to the garbage can while you’re at the beach. One stiff summer breeze can blow trash right out of beach garbage cans, increasing the likelihood that garbage ends up in the ocean. That risk is nonexistent if beachgoers bring only reusable materials they plan to take home with them. Keep a watchful eye on dogs. Many people like to bring their dogs to the beach. But dog owners must monitor their dogs to ensure they don’t relieve themselves in the ocean. According to the Pacific Shellfish Institute, pet waste can reduce the oxygen content in the oceans, potentially harming fish and threatening their existence. When packing for the beach, dog owners who plan to bring their four-legged friends should make sure they pack enough bags to collect their dogs’ excrement. Discard each bag appropriately. Get your hands dirty. Many people understandably view the beach as a getaway where they want to relax rather than work. But beachgoers can do their part to protect the surf and sand by picking up any litter they see while strolling the sand. One need not conduct an extensive beach cleanup, but every piece of trash a beachgoer picks up is a piece of trash that does not find its way into the ocean, where it can negatively affect marine life and make swimming in the sea less enjoyable. Hundreds of millions of people visit beaches every year. Protecting these popular getaways does not take much effort, but those efforts can have a lasting impact. 22002200JJUULLYY | | 2299
