By Diana Peploe A s times continually change, people are always looking for healthier ways to live, and this search is especially true in the skincare and spa industry. Some trends on the rise include organic skincare facials, fire-and-ice facials, HydraFacials, spa yoga, shinrin-yoku and spray tans. FACIALS ON THE RISE A brief history of facials Facials, performed by licensed professionals trained in the beautification of the skin ― whether by a spa-or-salon-based esthetician or a medical-setting aesthetician, are therapeutic multistep treatments that help keep the skin looking and feeling its best. The service can help target and treat acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation or dark spots, uneven texture and tone, dehydration and sensitive skin issues. Facials and skin treatments can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times when Cleopatra took milk and honey baths. Lactic acid in the milk chemically exfoliates the skin by removing dead cells, while honey, a natural humectant, fights infections with its antibacterial properties and provides added moisture. Organic facials Skin is the largest organ of the human body. Like the body, what you do to it can make a huge difference in how your skin looks and feels. Eating foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants, drinking plenty of water and taking care of the body through exercise and proper sleep are essential self-care methods. Along with contributing to a healthy diet, superfoods are also great to put on the skin. More and more skincare brands are switching to organic, natural products made with superfoods. A few brands on the rise in the spa industry are Juice Beauty, Intelligent Nutrients, Eminence Organic Skincare, One Love Organics and Herbivore Botanicals. One brand, Eminence, featured an online way to find an “Eminence green spa” near you. With easy-to-find features like this, it’s no wonder organic facials have experienced a spike in spa services. Fire-and-ice facials Contrast therapy, loosely translated, is a service in which all or part of the body is treated first with heat, alternating next with cold. Contrast therapy offers a multitude of benefits, including reduced inflammation, improved circulation, decreased swelling, elevated mood and accelerated energy and alertness. A fire- and-ice facial uses contrast therapy. The heat or “fire” is achieved by masques that have unique ingredients like Diana Peploe is a WVM contributor and a licensed esthetician, nail technician and a massage therapist at The Venetian European Spa & Salon, https://venetianspanc.com/. cinnamon or paprika, steam and hot stones. The “ice” is created by cold tools, cooled spritzes, ice and masques with cooling effects from ingredients like cucumber, menthol and peppermint. HydraFacials A HydraFacial, also known as hydra dermabrasion, combines cleaning and extracting and then depositing serums into the skin for an effective exfoliating treatment that also nourishes and hydrates. This procedure, usually done in a medspa, dermatologist's office or plastic surgeon’s office, has been the talk of the town in the skincare industry. Like most facials, it requires no downtime and can be done as an express service for busy professionals who want a quick, lunchtime facial. BODY TREATMENTS ON THE RISE Spa yoga Yoga, an ancient Hindu system of stretching and toning the body through movements or postures called asanas, is composed of deep breathing, relaxation methods and diet. Many spas now incorporate yoga as a part of wellness and stress-reduction programs. What better way to end a long day than with a yoga practice, followed by a detoxifying body treatment and a facial: a one-stop shop for all of your holistic, self-care and wellness needs. Spray tans Making a resurgence in the salon and spa industry is spray tanning. Spray tanning is a safe way to achieve a golden glow without the harmful rays of the sun. Some places offer spray tan machines, where patrons step inside an enclosed capsule and receive a machine showering of tanning solution. In spas, spray tans are usually performed by a person with a hand sprayer to even out the application and customizing the exact color solution best for the customer’s complexion. Shinrin-yoku Foresting bathing, also referred to as shinrin-yoku, was coined in Japan in the 1980s. Begin by taking a mindful walk through wooded areas while focusing on your breathing and surroundings, attending to the sights, smells and sounds of the outdoors to reap the therapeutic benefits of Mother Nature. With all these trending takes on skin and body care available, why wait? Kick up your self-care routine with these up-and-coming treatments today. 2020 AUGUST | 9

The real learning occurs when students can problem- solve the issues associated with developing more sustainable practices. GGI provides education and awareness for all levels at all schools. The elementary and middle levels include the Recycling Olympics and classes on how to recycle correctly. Other opportunities include pollinator lessons. For the past five years, the Go Green Initiative has sponsored an Earth Day celebration. The idea is to take learning about Earth to the outside world. Second graders participate in activities at a local park, and environmental educators from the area create activities for them. Career and technical high school students in agriculture, green technology and horticulture work alongside the educators to teach the younger students. The primary children learn everything from building alternative-energy models to examining the organisms and their role in our world. Gloria Lengel is a retired environmental science teacher who lives with her husband and two rescue Doxies in Fayetteville. She works for Sustainable Sandhills and is embedded in the Cumberland County Schools directing the Go Green Initiative. 10 | AU G U S T 2 0 2 0

By Jessica N. Little, Ph.D. The foods we eat are key determinants of our overall health ― they can boost our mood, prevent heart disease and diabetes and help us live longer. But have you heard that your diet can bolster the health of your brain, too? Despite comprising only 2% of our body weight, our minds use 20% of our energy stores — that's a lot of the calories you consume. And with modern medicine advances allowing people to live longer, ensuring our nervous system is adequately supported into old age is more important than ever. Accumulated research shows that while our likelihood of developing cognitive disorders is partly genetic, lifestyle choices may be just as contributory. Of note, a brain-healthy diet can ward off cognitive diseases that disproportionately affect women across the life span, including depression, insomnia and Alzheimer's disease. The good news is that many of the same healthy eating principles that support our other organs will also ensure a healthy brain. For more details, check out the MIND diet developed by Rush University Medical Center, published in 2015 by Alzheimer's & Dementia Journal. Get started on nourishing your brain now to ensure good cognitive health by following these guidelines. Eat your vegetables. To start, make at least half of your meal plate vegetables and fruits. A study published in Neurology in 2018 showed that older adults who eat 1-2 servings per day of dark, leafy greens such as kale, spinach, collards and Swiss chard have less cognitive decline with age compared to those who rarely eat them. Up the ante with antioxidants. Our brain cells are susceptible to a type of damage called oxidative stress, where oxygen metabolism produces free-radical agents. A 2014 BMJ Open investigation revealed foods that contain antioxidants can reduce the development of Alzheimer's disease plaques in the brain. Vitamins B12, C, D, E and K and elements zinc, selenium, magnesium, chromium and specific phytocompounds ― chemical composites of plant origin ― all serve as antioxidants. Found in high levels in berries, other fruits and vegetables, dark chocolate, nuts and extra- virgin olive oil, extracted polyphenols, such as from blueberries, improved memory performance within just six months according to a study in The Journals of Gerontology. Taking these vitamins and elements as supplements have shown no benefit, however, and may even be harmful at high doses ― so be sure to get them from natural dietary sources. Jessica N. Little, Ph.D., completed her doctoral work in nervous system development and is currently finishing her medical degree at the University of Virginia, with plans to become a neurologist. A Cumberland County native, she resides in Charlottesville, Virginia, with her husband Spencer and cat Lexie. 16 | AU G U S T 2 0 2 0
