RITA THOMAS Rita Thomas is an Army veteran and freelance artist who works primarily in pen-and- ink and colored pencils. T his is a great idea whether you want to overwhelm that special someone or embarrass your best friend at work. For the third year in a row, Fayetteville’s Cross Creek Chordsmen have offered to travel nearly anywhere in the area — from Southern Pines to Fort Bragg — with a Valentine’s Day serenade for that special someone. “We come to their work, their home, wherever, and sing to them,” said coordinator Joshua Gray-Heim. “Nothing is funnier than seeing four guys have to go through security and explain why they should be allowed to take the pitch pipe, which we use to start our songs on the right key, instead of leaving it at the security desk.” A quartet will surprise the recipient on Valentine’s Day with a box of chocolates and a flower and will then burst into “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Heart of my Heart.” The Cross Creek Chordsmen are accepting requests for Singing Valentines. Prior to Feb. 14, call 910-890-4580. Callers can ask that the Chordsmen be dispatched at a specific time on Feb. 14 or let the Chordsmen choose for themselves. It costs $50 to schedule a Singing Valentine. 8 FEBRUARY 2019

One thing that is difficult to do where birds are con- cerned, however, is to get good information about species numbers, migration patterns and any changes in those patterns. That’s where regular folks, children and experienced bird-watchers come in. How? By becoming citizen scientists. Each February, residents across the country participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count, or GBBC, for short. The bird count was created in 1998 by the National Audubon Society and The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. These organizations are dedicated to the study of birds and their habits, migration patterns, and bird population numbers across the 50 states. By participating, people have the opportunity to contribute valuable data about wild birds to scientists at these organizations. 12 FEBRUARY 2019

This year, the GBBC takes place COVER STORY Feb. 15-18. Getting involved is easy and fun. FEBRUARY 2019 13 First, create a free GBBC account online at http://gbbc.birdcount.org. Or, download the eBird mobile app for your digital device. It is easy to upload photos, and participants can see real-time data, maps and charts. The count should be done on one or more days during the four-day period in February for at least 15 minutes, although counts may be done for more than 15 minutes or multiple times during that timeframe. Bird-watchers should tally the numbers and kinds of different bird spe- cies seen during that time. Counting may be done from home, at the park or on a walk — any location across the 50 states is fine. Be sure to submit a separate checklist for each new day, time or location that you count. Common birds found in the Fayetteville area during the winter are the dark-eyed junco, Carolina chickadee, tufted tit- mouse and an assortment of sparrows, finches and warblers. Occasionally, flocks of cedar waxwings, with their smooth feathers, black masks and red-tipped wings, will alight on a shrub to feast on berries. Perhaps the most recognized bird observed in the winter is the northern cardinal, the North Carolina state bird. Need help with bird identification? Via this online bird guide, you can search birds by keywords, taxon- omy or shape: www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search. There are also many bird guide books or apps avail- able. The GBBC is a fun activity to do with kids while sipping hot chocolate from the warmth of home, and the best part is that it helps scientists track and gather information about bird species in the United States.

Associate Publisher LAST VIEW uIts's, tfooor I was intrigued when I first read this month’s cover story about the Great Backyard Bird Count. 2222 FFEEBBRRUUAARRYY 22001199 Not to discount our winged friends — birds are beau- tiful — but as a nature lover, I lean more toward bees and butterflies. The birds do have an advocate in my home, though; my husband loves them. A smart family of cardinals has trained him to feed them pretty much on demand. He recognizes their call, both the male and female, and responds in kind. They see him coming up the front walk and call out to him. He smiles every time and calls back, foregoing greetings to our neighbors and sometimes even our children and the dog. They fly around the building and he meets them in the backyard with a handful of peanuts. In the mornings, they wait in the bushes outside our backdoor. Last thing, before leaving for work, he opens the door, coffee in one hand and peanuts in the other. The other birds chirp and flutter about, hoping to get their share. He’s strategic about it as he scatters the peanuts, first throwing a handful to the wrens and mourning doves to distract them, then gently tossing a more generous portion under the bushes for the cardinals, so they can get a nut or two before the squirrels descend and steal what’s left. Even if you aren't passionate about our winged friends, the Great Backyard Bird Count serves an important pur- pose on their behalf. On a practical level, birds perform many functions. They pollinate plants. One-third of the planet’s food supply depends on pollination. They dis- perse seeds, ensuring plant survival and diversity. They clean carcasses, recycling nutrients and replenishing the earth. They provide pest control by eating insects. And maybe most importantly for humans, birds are an indicator species — like the canary that miners carried into coal mines. If the canary died, the miners knew the air was unsafe and that they should put on a mask or return to the surface. Studying birds, their numbers, their health, their migra- tion patterns and behaviors can tell us about changing ecosystems as well as pollution and its effects on wild- life. We can measure biodiversity and disease outbreaks by tracking birds, too. All this information can be ex- trapolated to benefit not just wildlife, but people. If you choose to participate in the GBBC, those 15 min- utes can be a lot of fun because birds are beautiful and entertaining. But the information you gather is not just for the birds, it’s for us, too. This website has everything you need to make your bird counting experience fun and memorable: http://gbbc.birdcount.org.
