Just So Thankful By Laura Boarts Bitter or content? Angry or at peace? Distracted or focused? Can we actually choose any of these? What I mean is, do we have a choice in how we feel when things don't go our way? Or worse than that, destroy us? Do some things just happen ― we feel what we feel ― then we move on to the next thing and hope to Jesus we handle it better the next time, only to discover we have to climb through 50 years of junk we've never dealt with to feel some fleeting bit of happiness? No, we don't. And yes, we can choose. OK, that's a bold claim with a lot of hope and no actual instruction to back it up. How in the world do we do this, if it's even possible? The Fayetteville Community Dinner began somewhat by Pages 16-17 photo credit: Emily Wood Photography accident. What I thought was going to be a styled photo shoot turned into something unexpected that was so 2 0 2 0 N OV E M B E R | 17 rewarding and fulfilling, it would change who I was as a person. The first dinner gathering was supposed to be for about five women, most of whom I'd never really met. While chatting on Facebook and Instagram and learning of what I had planned, these girls asked if they could join in and invite a friend. That first dinner ended up with 15 women in attendance, and at the end of it, we left with the best, buzziest feelings. Our cups were full of a sense of togetherness and community ― something I think we were made to realize was lacking in this world of business and social media. I decided that night that our little city, and the world, needed more of this togetherness. More community. I decided more events like this could make Fayetteville a more pleasant place to live. Thus, the Fayetteville Community Dinner began. Hosting events at the area venues of Leclair's General Store, Catlett Farms and The Broadfoot Bandy House, to name a few, each dinner looks a little different, from where we gather to the faces that sign up to attend. Some are simple get- togethers, while others are more intricately planned, such as last fall’s Friendsgiving. However, the program's core is always the same. Bringing kind, strong women together to celebrate each other and the city we live in is our mission and mantra. Dinners take place twice a year in the spring and fall, though the pandemic put an end to both events in 2020. A new planned feature, the Maker's Market, supporting female small-business owners and crafters, was also canceled but held virtually instead. Though the invitation to attend is open to all, seating is limited. With room for variations, the usual fare is a potluck, and the only requirements are to bring a dish, identify as female and reside in the Fayetteville area. To see photos of previous dinners and find out more, visit Fayetteville Community Dinner on Facebook or Instagram and sign up for an event soon. We hope to see you there.

KISSing Christmas How to Keep it Simple, Santa “Christmas Times A-Coming, Christmas Times A-Coming and I am going home” is a holiday song initially written by Tex Logan and sung by Bill Monroe in 1951. The famous tune has been remade by many artists and for good reason. Light-hearted and simple, the melody presents the right idea for “kissing” Christmas. Going home and living out the lyrics to enjoy “snowflakes falling” ― well, maybe not in Fayetteville ― “watching pine tree needles falling, seeing white candles burning, hearing bells loudly ringing, visiting with friends and family and finding joy in just the singing” ― sound like great ideas to me. Yes, Christmas is right around the corner, and with this beautiful time of the year comes happiness, excitement and plenty of thrills and chills. But with the uptimes also comes the downside of stress. Many people feel anxious when it comes time to decorate the yard and house, decide what parties and activities the family will attend and figure out what to buy for family and friends. With gifts comes the reality of calculating the money to be spent while maintaining a regular ― and hopefully balanced ― monthly budget. Still, others experience loneliness and depression during the holidays for various reasons. The year 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, and the first thought might be to do Christmas even bigger than usual because the year has been such a drag. But stop and think a moment; money may be tight for gifts with closed businesses and many out of work. Family members may be recovering from illness and cannot attend social gatherings, plus social distancing may keep families and friends apart. Therefore, this Christmas season may call for a different mindset and a new approach. So, why not think outside the box and simplify, simplify, simplify. Experts offer various tips on how to unclutter Amy Jeffrey serves as the administrative assistant and data manager of Falcon Christian Academy, a position she has held the last five years.
