CHRISTINA ARREOLA ith the new wave of Instagram health bloggers and releases of documentary after documentary, Contributing Writer veganism is a hot topic. Veganism, unlike the more straightforward vegetarianism (which eliminatesMy journey meat from the diet) dictates a diet that includesto veganism no animal products at all, including dairy. With access to information easier now than it has ever been, people are8 SEPTEMBER 2018 taking it upon themselves to dig deeper into eating and lifestyle philosophies. The journey to veganism is different for everyone, as is the reasoning behind the switch. My journey started approximately one-and-a-half years ago. I was fortunate enough to intern for a documentary film festival, Full Frame, in Durham, North Carolina, where I was able to view films in between my work responsibilities. One specifically stood out to me. “The Last Pig,” a 2017 documentary by filmmaker Alison Argo, centers around a new pig farmer who wants to be a source of clean pork. With no prior experience, he raises and slaughters his pigs on his own. This film follows him as he questions the sanctity of life, the equality of animals and humans and the power he has as a sentient creature to kill. He ultimately decides the year the film began will be his last as a pig farmer. The film follows him to his last slaughtered pig. It’s a haunting documentary full of self-reflection. That film followed me long after the festival. It made me dive deep into research. As someone who tries to be as environmentally conscious as I can, I learned, from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, that livestock (cows, chickens and pigs) produce up 18 percent of the world’s greenhouse emissions. According to the same studies done by the FAO, greenhouse emissions are a primary contributor to the growing issue of climate change. Furthermore, 64 percent of the world’s ammonia emissions, which heavily contribute to acid rain, is traced back to livestock. With large quantities of meat produced for the country’s growing population, large plots of land are needed, which has increased deforestation. Additionally, meat production takes a lot of water. It takes 4,000 gallons of water to produce two pounds of beef and more than 1,000 gallons to produce the same amount of chicken meat, according to the Water Footprint Network. Comparably, it takes 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. Knowing I can impact the environment just by reducing my meat intake was enough to inspire me to make a change. Everything else fell into place. It is no secret that there are health benefits from lowering the amount of meat in one’s diet. Processed forms like bacon and sausage have been associated with an increase in cancer risk, cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Red meats are also associated with an increase in cancer risk, all according to studies found in the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Also, switching to veganism and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can lead to weight loss. Several randomized controlled studies, the gold standard of scientific research, from reliable sources like The Journal of Nutritional Research, the public Health Research Center of the University of South Carolina, and the Department of Medicine of George Washington University, show that a vegan diet is effective for dropping pounds. Adjusting to a plant-based diet naturally causes a reduction in calorie intake, and according to those studies, even when

She’s lived in North Carolina for over 20 years and started her blog to share her Southernexperiences with others. When she’s not assisting the military in saving the earth, she’s eating her way around the South, meeting new people and looking for new small towns to explore. House in the Horseshoe The small North Carolina house’s story in the fight for American independence A few months before the Continental Congress voted on the Declaration of Independenceon July 2, 1776, North Carolina passed the Halifax Resolves. This was the first official actionagainst Great Britain in the colonies, which paved the way for colonists to declare theirindependence and launch the American Revolution. This declaration was not taken lightly, and in response, the mighty army of Great Britain waged a fierce war against the uprising. Often, American children are taught about this pivotal time in our nation’s history from theperspective of the great battles fought in the northern colonies. Rarely are they taught aboutthe British “Southern strategy” led by British General Lord Charles Cornwallis. This Southernstrategy employed by the British was designed to garner support from Southerners loyal to theBritish crown. This Southern campaign ranged from Virginia to Georgia during the secondhalf of the American Revolution.16 SEPTEMBER 2018

One portrayal of this British offensive strategy is conveyed in LOCAL BLOGGERthe movie “The Patriot,” which focuses on the Southern campaignand the patriots’ fight for freedom. Although the movie is not SEPTEMSBEPETRE2M01B8ER 127018 17entirely historically accurate, it does portray a storyline basedon actual events and introduces a cast of characters built on thefoundation of real people like Lord Cornwallis, Banastre Tarleton, and a four-in-one portrayal of Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan,Andrew Pickens and Thomas Sumter in the main character ofBenjamin Martin. The movie highlights the fighting spirit of thepatriots and their resolve to break from the tyranny of England. North Carolina in particular served as a hotbed of guerrillafighting, and the patriots fiercely antagonized the British acrossthe Southern countryside. Patriots fought against those loyal tothe British crown in skirmishes in rural areas and small townsthat dotted the landscape from 1778 to 1781. These dust-upsbetween the loyalists and the patriots, such as the one thatoccurred at the House in the Horseshoe, eventually led to theBritish surrender in 1781 in Virginia. The House in the Horseshoe, also known as the Alston House,is located on the early colonial frontier in what is present-day Sanford, North Carolina. Aptly named, the House in theHorseshoe is nestled at the top of a hill in the horseshoe bend onthe Deep River. David Fanning, a notable North Carolina loyalist, participatedin the war loyal to his king from the early days of the war untilthe end. In 1781, Fanning and his large loyalist militia led raidingparties from Georgia to North Carolina, stealing goods, capturingpatriots and wreaking havoc along the way. In the summer of 1781, Fanning brought the war to PhilipAlston’s front door and a small battle raged on for many hours atthe House in the Horseshoe. Alston and his small contingencyof Patriot militia were camping at the farm when Fanning andhis band of loyalist raiders rode up to the house and initiatedtheir attack. Alston was in the house with his wife, Temperance, andchildren while his men camped out on the grounds when theywere attacked by Fanning and his men. As the patriots volleyedshots with Fanning’s men, Alston’s wife and children hid in thefireplace. Bullet holes from the fight in 1781 are found throughoutthe home’s wooden siding and are still evident today. Although a small skirmish, it resulted in the capture of Alstonand his men. As the loyalists pushed a burning cart toward thehouse, intending to burn it down, Mrs. Alston waved her whitehandkerchief, stepped out on the front lawn and negotiated atruce and the terms of her husband’s surrender. As any motherwould do, Mrs. Alston boldly fought to save the lives of herchildren and her home, as well as the lives of her husband andhis men. The House in the Horseshoe is a North Carolina State HistoricSite and is a short drive from Fayetteville and the surroundingarea. Last month, the House in the Horseshoe hosted its annualreenactment of the battle, which it always performs the firstweekend of August. A fantastic, family-friendly event, thereenactment includes, along with the battle reenactment, acolonial camp, cannon and musket demonstrations, tomahawkthrowing and an overview of colonial life, including cooking, weaving and gardening. In addition to the annual battle reenactment, the House in theHorseshoe hosts the Fall Muster, Colonial Christmas and manyother special events. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday year-round as well.
