WVM: How have you managed work/life balance during COVID? JW: I believe that finding safe methods to socialize with friends and family has helped during COVID as well as \"disconnecting\" from technology from time to time to enjoy the little things. WVM: The country had to change how education was provided to students in a very small window of time during the pandemic. Has that changed any of your philosophies or positions on education? JW: The changes to facilitation showed me that this is an ever-evolving engine in education. We must stay abreast of the best methods for delivering instruction and determine best practices for adapting to our “new normal.” Students needed competent and caring adults to teach and guide them through one of the most significant changes to education that any of us has ever experienced. WVM: What did you learn about yourself and your staff as a result of changing to virtual learning? JW: We learned that we needed to stay connected in any way possible, so we found ways to interact professionally and personally. My administrative staff was enlightened about the home lives of many of our staff members, and when we learned how many people don't have a family or support system nearby, we became a \"surrogate family\" in support of them. Angela Berry Lewis is a Department of the Army civilian. She loves to read and listen to music in her spare time. 4 | MAY 2022

How can schools overcome them? QT: The most important challenges we are facing are learning recovery and acceleration, and mental health disparities. Many of our scholars are demonstrating one or two grade-level deficiencies in reading and math. Foster Parenting: HTiimghess,iLnoBwestwanedenall the By Bonnie Patterson Editor’s note: May is National Foster Care Month, a time to recognize that we can each play a part in enhancing the lives of children and youth in foster care. In the support group, we talked with, prayed for and encouraged other adoptive and foster parents. We trained volunteers, set up a weekly meal drop off and babysat for foster families. These comfort measures helped burnt-out parents get a break and feel loved. We also directed couples who were looking into fostering or adoption to resources and agencies. That is what these children feel has happened 2 0 2 2 M AY | 19 to them. Sometimes regression occurs, which is when the child acts at a younger age. This is what is happening when a five-year-old crawls on the ground and acts like a baby or a teen plays with dolls and cuddles a teddy bear. Toileting, bowel and bladder problems may occur, a sign of sexual abuse. Attention deficit disorders and learning disorders can surface, often the result of both nature and nurture complications, i.e., prenatal drug use, sporadic school attendance and more. Foster children may need frequent appointments for occupational or speech therapy, counseling and tutoring. The children may have court- mandated visits with the birth parents virtually or physically every other week. All of these things can occur in the life of a foster child, but underneath it all, they are hurting children in need of help, extra love and attention. My biggest high in my new job of fostering is seeing this little guy grow and learn every day. I use all my skills as a nurse to help him in speech therapy and occupational therapy. When I hear him say a new word and expand his fine and gross motor skills from the fun games we play, I beam with pride. I love all his hugs, kisses and “Mommy this, and Mommy that” verbiage. My lowest low is when, as an active young boy, he falls and hurts himself accidentally. Not only do I feel bad for his boo-boo, but I also have to email an incident report to the social worker. Such incidents make me feel like a bad parent, but I also know that being human means making mistakes and learning from them. “Thor” falls often, but with determination, he gets back up each time. He doesn’t let anyone, or anything, deter him from a goal. Parents teach, but children are also great teachers. Even if I am not a perfect foster parent and make mistakes, I will not let anything stop me from accomplishing my goal of helping these children. My love for “Thor” helps me see past the bad behaviors, tantrums and lows to the hurting baby needing a mother’s love.
