Books for the Beach By Alison Hurley Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina! We are blessed to live in a beautiful state, complete with white sand beaches and majestic mountain views. You can travel the state with these summer reads that all take place in our home state. Diane Chamberlain Big Lies in a Small Town Taking place in alternating timelines in Edenton, North Carolina, this book tells the stories of two young women ― Morgan in 2018 and Anna Dale in 1939. With vivid descriptions and rich imagery, you feel as though you are there in Edenton, both present and past. Many themes prevail in this novel ― love, loss, racial tension, mental illness and the restorative power of a second chance. I must thank my book club for choosing this one and introducing me to this very talented author. Most of her books are set in North Carolina, and they are all now on my to-read list. Megan Goldin The Night Swim The Night Swim is about Rachel, a podcaster whose first season, an overnight success, freed a wrongly convicted man. Now the pressure is on to create an even more talked-about second season, and this story begins here. Set in a fictional North Carolina beach town of Neapolis, Rachel covers the trial of the town’s golden boy. Set for Olympic-swimming stardom, he has been accused of raping the granddaughter of the police chief. While there, Rachel begins receiving letters from an unknown sender, asking her to investigate the death of a local girl 25 years earlier. Officially, Jenny Sills’ death was an accident, but the letter’s sender, her younger sister, insists she was murdered. This book asks you to think about the price of a reputation. Can people in a small town ever change their perceptions about what they believe to be true? Megan Miranda The Girl from Widow Hills When Arden was 6-years-old, she was swept away during a storm while sleepwalking. After being missing for several days, she was found clinging to life in a storm drain. Similar to real-life accounts, her story garnered national attention and unwanted fame. Twenty years later, she has moved away, changed her name to Olivia and is working and living in a remote North Carolina town. This is her life until she starts sleepwalking again and discovers the body of someone from her past life. A true psychological thriller, this read will have you second-guessing everything you think you know about the characters and their actions. This book is an exciting look at memory and how trauma shapes what we think we know about our pasts. Joy Jordan-Lake Under a Gilded Moon “Books can remind you, you can make of your life what you want it to be.” That’s what Kerry, the main character, has learned from her teachers. She comes from a poor and abusive home and is striving for a better life. However, after two years at college, she is called back home to the North Carolina mountains to help care for her dying father. She is forced to get a job to provide for her family, and the only place hiring is the Biltmore Estate. Many moving parts exist in this novel ― race and classism, eugenics, immigration and murder! However, it’s the attention to detail describing the beautiful mountain area, the people and their culture and the fantastic Biltmore Estate that stuck with me. After you finish, be sure to read the author’s notes ― she did her research for this one ― and check out her website . Then, you can plan your first or next trip to Asheville! Essays on Liberty Exercising the Right to Petition By Michelle Hallas L iving here in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the sights and sounds of our American freedoms can be seen and heard most every day ― from seeing the soldier next door to hearing the military range miles away. The great military members of our community fight continuously for our country and in doing so, allow the United States of America to maintain its freedom, most notably ensuring that our rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution stay intact. One of these constitutional rights we Americans have is the right to petition. Petitioning is a very common practice dating back to the 18th century that allows citizens to assemble peacefully and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Put in simple terms, this means to try to create change for the greater good when we citizens feel that the government is not making the correct decisions. Essays on Liberty Freedom of Speech: What’s Protected, What’s Not By Leslie Corpening shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.\" What does the phrase \"abridging the freedom of speech\" actually mean? It means that the government cannot interfere, punish, censor or oppress you because of what you communicate. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the path to freedom was long and arduous. Taking nearly 200 years to establish firm constitutional limits on the government's power to punish “seditious” and “subversive' speech,” the Supreme Court has wrestled with what speech is protected. During times of national stress, upheaval and war, people have been censored, fined and jailed for speaking out. An ACLU article at https://www.aclu.org/other/freedom-expression recounts that in 1798, during the French-Indian War, Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, four laws that restricted the activities of foreign residents in the country and limited freedom of speech and of the press. The policies made it a crime for anyone to publish \"any false, scandalous and malicious writing\" against the government. It was used by the then-dominant Federalist Party to prosecute prominent Republican newspaper editors during the late 18th century. In the 19th century, sedition, criminal anarchy and criminal conspiracy laws suppressed the speech of abolitionists, religious minorities, suffragists, labor organizers and pacifists. Many legal battles have been fought and won to establish precedent concerning what's protected and what's not protected under the law. The website Uscourts.gov provides several court cases that highlight these issues. What's Protected • The right not to salute the flag, West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette, 1943 • The right to burn the flag in protest, Texas V. Johnson 1989; United States v. Eichman, 1990 • The right to use certain offensive words and phrases to convey political messages, Cohen v. California, 1971 What's Not Protected • The right to incite actions that would harm others, Schenck v. United States, 1919 • The right to make or distribute obscene materials, Roth v. United States, 1957 • The right of students to advocate illegal drug use at a school-sponsored event, Morse v. Frederick, 2007 From the so-called \"communist\" McCarthy era to the \"we shall overcome\" civil rights movement to the current \"information superhighway\" social media craze, free speech has remained constant and as controversial as ever. Five years ago, former NFL player Colin Kaepernick set off a firestorm when he kneeled during the playing of the National Anthem. Explaining this act of protest he said, \"There's a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality.\" The reaction was immediate and swift. He was criticized for being unpatriotic by some and hailed as a hero by others. Former President Donald Trump was recently banned from his social media accounts after the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riots. Trump's supporters decried that his First Amendment rights were being infringed upon, while his critics countered that free speech didn't apply to private social media companies. Both cases are highly charged and politicized, lending to the debate of what is protected or unprotected expression. Regardless of your opinion. the point that we can debate them is the key. Benjamin Franklin once said, \"Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins.\"

If you can’t think of a one, feel free to use words from quotes, movies, Scripture or books that inspire you. For example, I wrote my personal goal affirmation, and it reads: I am intentional about my health. I am putting in the work to become physically fit. I am committed to my weekly workouts. My body is becoming stronger and better every day. I used a favorite quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson to affirm my financial goals: The desire of gold is not for gold. It is for the means of freedom and benefit. I used Proverbs 18:24 as a relational goal motivator to remind me to be a better friend: Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family. So, you see, whether it’s an affirmation in your own words or ones sourced from other places or people, your affirmation board can provide the inspiration and motivation to propel you to act. While competing in pageants, I’d make these boards, and instead of writing, Win Miss Universe, I focused more on how I wanted to make people feel during my reign. Winning at the highest level would’ve been incredible, but when I thought about the endgame, I knew much more was at stake. Dozens of girls were looking up to me, and I knew I had a purpose to fulfill during my time in pageantry. Referring to my affirmation boards over time reminded me to never give up. Filling my cup with positive, productive affirmations helps me stay mentally fit. It grows me spiritually when I place biblical text on my board and builds my discipline and confidence when I’m actually living out the things I write on those sticky notes. As my cup overflows, I am able to go out into my community and pour into other young women who are looking to achieve their goals in life as well. What about you? Affirm your goals and go for them today.

I enjoy these liberties every day because of the sacrifice of those coming before me, and the dedication of the ones now serving. It’s a Woman’s World: Stedman’s Small Town Feeling By Paulette Naylor I f you Google Stedman, North Carolina, you will find that it was settled in 1841, later incorporated in 1917 and currently has a population of approximately 1,400. The web giant will tell you it's a small community about 10 miles east of Highway 301 in Fayetteville and that it “hosts local merchants, churches, daycares, public schools, a dental office, doctor offices, a volunteer fire department and post office.” What you will not learn on the internet is what a wonderfully friendly little community it is. Stedman has been my home for the majority of my life. My family has farmed, worshipped and raised families in this small community, plus owned and operated the local grocery store until finally selling out to the Carroll family many years ago. They just kept coming,\" Bunce said, “and you know, we’re happy to be here for them.” The busy season usually starts up around Easter time with the strawberry season. Every year, I pick up strawberries, squash, cabbage, asparagus, potatoes, kale, eggplant, cucumbers, corn and onions. And this fall, the farm is trying something new –– Bunce Brothers Corn Maze. Look for pumpkins and cider, for sure –– and more. They've already started preparations, scheduling hours to run Fridays -Sundays, Sept. 24-Nov. 7. I know some of you might not cook. Owner Carmen Headden opened up right in the heat of COVID-19. \"People thought we were crazy, but we had a mission and had already invested a lot into the restaurant,\" Headden said. Jonathan's Café is open Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. They celebrated their anniversary June 5. Through the help of people like Headden and other lifelong Stedman?
