Adventurous Women Traveling the World By JILL MERRILL Women purchase 80 percent of all travel booked worldwide. Women earn more and spend more than ever before. They not only plan weddings and honeymoons, but they now dominate every category of travel purchased. We women are travelling to more exotic locations, taking part in immersive experiences, such as foodie or cultural experiences, travelling with a purpose of helping save the environment (eco-tourism) or helping people in areas of immense need (social impact tourism). We want to see, taste and experience the world in ways we have never experienced it before and we are sharing these experiences with a wide group of people in our circles and even explore some on our own. Twenty years ago, solo women travelers were unheard of. Now it’s becoming quite common. Just a few short years ago the largest segment of travelers were people in their “golden years” spending their children’s inheritance trotting the globe. When they started sharing their experiences by paying for their children and grandchildren to join them, something happened. A new appreciation of travel was born to the younger generation and they have embraced their wanderlust. Social media has added to this boom as the younger generation posts pictures of their latest adventures. So, where to travel - that is the question! And how to travel. On our next adventure, do we want to take an ocean cruise, CONCEALED CARRY HANDGUN TRAINING river cruise, fly, drive, tour in a group, have a private tour, FIREARMS FOR FEMALES FAMILY FOCUS SPORT SHOOTING explore on our own or a combination of some of those? Family Fun Awaits at NC Beaches For many in the state, an annual trip to the beach is on the “must do” list. For some, the developed beaches like Myrtle Beach or Wrightsville Beach are favorite destinations. But many find the tranquility of North Carolina’s family beaches a better way to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. Below are a couple of the best beach destinations in the state: Ocean Isle Beach Ocean Isle Beach is just a short drive from Fayetteville. The island is comprised of seven miles of south-facing beaches. The spring season begins in March, with the summer season kicking off in June. The island has a small town flavor that is hard to beat. When you drive across the beach to the island, you can literally feel your stress slipping away. There are numerous homes for rent on the island to fit the needs of families of all sizes. Most houses on the channel have docks where you can fish, swim or kyak, while the oceanfront homes give you breathtaking views of the Atlantic. There are a few restaurants and bars, and it wouldn’t be a beach town without an arcade, putt-putt and ice cream shop. Ocean Isle has all three. The beaches are clean and even during the height of the season you can find a comfortable place to plant your chair. Instead of the rowdy behavior you find at some of the more developed beaches, you will find families picnicing, playing bocce ball or tossing around the football. The beach also has a great number of tidal pools that you can sit your chair in and stay cool when the temperatures start heating up. Many of the potters create special pieces specifically of art. On Friday, you can attend the Potters Gala and for the holidays. And if the great outdoors, wildlife and art are not enough to convince you to visit the Uwharrie’s you may want to check out the Uwharrie Wine Trail. Less than 45 miles separate four wineries along the Uwharrie Mountains Wine Trail, making it ideal for you to enjoy a day trip involving all or most wineries. The trail winds from Salisbury, which is just 45 minutes to the northeast of Charlotte, and heads southeast to Albemarle near the Uwharrie National Forest. It ends on top of Stony Mountain, where you can toast the panoramic views of the Uwharrie Mountains and the lower Yadkin Valley. Old Stone Winery was founded in 2001 and is currently owned and operated by Army veterans Darin and Naomi Griffin. Old Stone Winery is a 130-acre estate with 20 acres of muscadine grapes making award-winning wines. The winery also sources wine grapes as locally as possible, with many grapes from around Rowan County. Along with varied Muscadine offerings and several fruit wines (think blackberry and more), you’ll likely find Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Seyval Blanc, Chardonnay and more. There are tours, a tasting room and a gift shop. The Uwharrie Vineyard offers a wide variety of wines in its tasting room and gift shop. During tastings and tours, you’ll learn about the unique style of red and white wines made here, as well as blush wines, fruit wines and port-style wines. Live music events are frequent in the formal banquet hall and also on the large outside patio. Plus the winery's chef enjoys doing the food pairings with the wines. Dennis Vineyards features a variety of Muscadine wines, as well as several varietals and fruit wines. The ice wine-style Harvest Gold is the most-requested and least- available wine. Stony Mountain Vineyard offers a perfect ending to the Uwharrie Mountains Wine Trail. Stony Mountain features many varietal wines, including an interesting blend of Syrah and Sangiovese, as well as a half-dozen fruit wines and red and white Muscadine table wines. www.womensviewnc.com NOVEMBER 2016 – Page 15

Something for every taste... While at Cape Fear Vineyards & Winery, you will get a rare glimpse into the remarkable personal art collection of owner Alex Munroe. Munroe said he has been collecting art since he was a teen-ager and is proud to showcase it throughout the winery. Having a look at the collection of art is worth the trip itself. The collection ranges from original paintings to prints and lithographs, sketches, photos and celebrity memorabilia. You will see examples of works by Renoir, Picasso, Chagall displayed with pieces by Paul McCartney, Muhammad Ali, Jimi Hendrix and original paintings by Janis Joplin. There is something for every taste. • The Celebrity Hallway is lined with autographed photos of athletes, musicians, stars of television and movies, and even politicians. The sheer mass of photos make it a fun addition to Munroe’s vast collection. You can see the likes of Van Halen, Snoop Dogg, Kiss, Fats Domino, Richard Petty, John Glenn, Walter Cronkite, Chuck Norris, Dolly Parton, Brad Pitt and Tom Selleck on the wall along with President George H. W. Bush, astronaut John Glenn and explorer Edmund Hillary. • In The Cork Room is “The Game,” an original painting by Grace Slick, of Jefferson Airplane, dedicated to Munroe and Cape Fear Winery. It is a mesmerizing depiction of Alice in Wonderland and a particular white rabbit on a giant chess board with the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter among others. • Munroe has a collection of signed original lithographs by Salvador Dali from 1975-76. The original etchings were made by Dali on copper plates and the impressions were pulled in a studio in Paris. Together, they reveal flashes of scientific insight by the artist prompting some, at the time, to call Dali a modern day Da Vinci. In one, Dali depicts spectacles with holograms and computers for seeing imagined objects on a “radio phone.” • Ted Geisel’s (Dr. Suess) earliest and largest painting, “Abduction of the Sabine Women,” from 1930 depicts Rome’s legendary episode at the city’s founding celebration around 750 B.C. Roman men abducted women to take as wives to populate their new metropolis. The tradition of a groom carrying his bride over the threshold dates to this event. Geisel’s painting is on display in the gallery ballroom, which hosts wedding receptions. • There are several personal items on display from some of the biggest names in music history: Elvis’ shoes, sunglasses and necklace; a jacket worn by Michael Jackson; Ringo Starr’s shirt; handwritten song lyrics by Madonna; a hand-made Winnie the Pooh card by Britney Spears for her son inscribed with a verse ”… beyond the seas/ you’ll always mean/ the world to me.” • There are prints by Tom Everhart, a close collaborator of Charles Schulz, featuring the Peanuts characters. Before his death, Schulz gave Everhart permission to use the characters in his own artwork. Any establishment that displays “My Homie Ace” on the walls in the same room and with the same respect and admiration as works by Picasso and Dali, is a place you want to visit. www.womensviewnc.com NOVEMBER 2016 – Page 19
