Kingdom: Animalia Order: Galliformes Phylum: Chordata Family: Phasianidae Class: Aves Genus: Pavo Species: P. cristatus Most people have seen an Indian peafowl. Though they originate in India, the brightly colored birds are known for their incredibly beautiful feather displays. The male peafowls, called the peacocks, have trains made of over 200 feathers that can be six-feet-long. Normally, the feathers are folded and trail behind the bird with only the grey and brown backside showing. When they are startled, or to find a mate, the peacock will spread its feathers in a large, distinct fan. Their feathers have eyespots and are generally iridescent blue, bronze and green. The bodies of the peacocks are also covered in iridescent blue feathers. The more eyespots that a peacock has in its tail, the more attractive it is to females. • Females are called peahens. • Peafowls are a type of pheasant. • The peahens are usually plainer looking than the male birds. Their feathers are grey and brown so they can blend into their surroundings. • The main diet of a peafowl is flower petals, seeds, ants, termites, ticks and locusts. • Peafowl eggs are brown and are usually laid between April and September. animalcorner.co.uk/animals/peafowl/ • A peahen will sit on her clutch of six-12 eggs kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals/peafowl animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/peafowl for 28 days. kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals/indian-peafowl/ • Peafowls can live 40-50 years. • Babies are called peachicks. • Peacocks and peahens both have feather crests on their heads. • A group of peafowl is called a party or ostentation. • They are the national bird of India. • In the Hindi religion, the peacock is sacred because the eyes in the tail represent the eyes of the gods. • Males will start growing their trains at age three. • Peafowls can fly, but they do not fly very far. • Often, they will fly into nearby trees to avoid predators. • There are three species of peafowl: the Indian peafowl, the green peafowl and the Congo peafowl. • The Congo peafowl is native to Africa. • Their natural habitat is forests and rainforests. • Most weigh between six and nine pounds. • Males can be twice as large as females. • They can run 10 miles an hour. • They live in small groups. 6 www.kidsvillenews.com/cumberland September, 2019
Weather in Space The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). The forecasters at SWPC monitor the sun all day and night, using sensors on satellites and on the ground, to watch for solar storms. If a solar storm is detected, the SWPC can issue watches, warnings and alerts, similar to other hazardous weather forecasts, including flooding and hurricanes. Hans Zimmer provides a dramatic score that works with the feeling of the new film. The message in this film is that we may doubt ourselves, but it’s important to remember who we are, and that our friends and family can help remind us. There are some violent and intense scenes, so I wouldn’t recommend the movie for very young viewers. Kids from ages 6-18 will enjoy it, as well as adults. I give this film 5 out of 5 stars because Disney has created a brand- new, can’t-miss classic. 18 www.kidsvillenews.com/cumberland September, 2019
