Near? DOG-FRIENDLY FAYETTEVILLE Frequent walking and playing are important parts to keeping our furry friends happy and healthy. While a stroll around the neighborhood is fun, eventually sniffing the same mailbox post might not be as engaging as it once was. Luckily, Fayetteville has some wonderful places to add little more variety to the daily adventure, for you and your dog. The Cape Fear River Trail is a paved path that takes walkers, joggers and bikers through the woods and alongside the beautiful Cape Fear River. One-way, the trail is 5.3 miles long and includes a 1,000-foot bridge that spans the wetlands and marsh. It offers a beautiful view of some of the different ecosystems native to North Carolina. It even includes interpretive signs detailing 700 species of plants and 150 species of birds. As long as they are on leashes, pets are welcome to explore this trail with their owners. Dog parks are another great option. They allow friendly dogs to socialize and play with other four- legged friends. There are two options for dog parks in Fayetteville. The first is the Riverside Dog Park at 555 N. Eastern Blvd. It is a simple setup that includes two separate areas for large and small dogs. It is also entirely free. The other option is the Blessed Oasis Dog Park located at 7355 Stoney Point Road. A $20 membership fee is required, but the park includes a five-acre leash-free park, agility equipment and waste stations. All members are required to have shots and pass a temperament test.Page 10 – MARCH 2017

Our pets make us happy, help reduce stress and are a part of our family. But,in the eyes of the law, pets are personal property. If our pets are negligently harmed, such as Laci, a beloved JackRussell Terrier in the case, Shera v. N.C. State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, monetary damages arelimited. Laci was diagnosed with liver cancer at nine years old, and her veterinarian referred her to the state veterinaryhospital for treatment. The treatment was successful, and the cancer was in remission. Unfortunately, in 2007, Lacistarted vomiting, had a poor appetite and had difficulty urinating. She was admitted to the hospital and died threedays later. During her last hospitalization, the veterinarian negligently placed a feeding tube into her lungs insteadof the stomach resulting in her death. The family spent more than $28,000 for Laci’s veterinary treatment. Her owners sued and lovingly spoke of the joy Laci brought to their family, including her calming influence. Herowner had a heart condition, and Laci helped him reduce stress. The family had owned Laci for 13 years, from theage of five weeks. Although a beloved pet, Laci’s owners were awarded $350.00, the replacement cost for the dog,and $2557.00, the cost of the last hospitalization. According to the court, “the sentimental bond between a humanand his or her pet companion can neither be quantified in monetary terms or compensated for under our currentlaw.” Emotional damages for the loss of a pet are not recoverable in North Carolina. Under current law, if our pet is negligently harmed or killed by another person or animal, the damages availablein a lawsuit are limited. Even though homeowners insurance may cover the damages of your pet harming anotherperson, it will not cover veterinary bills for our own pet or for its loss. With limited damages available after a lawsuit, pet owners may want to consider a pet insurance plan for theirbeloved dog or cat, especially for our pets like Laci, who are older, beloved members of our families for whom wewant to ensure the best veterinary treatment at each stage of their life.Page 18 – MARCH 2017

A Cat's View DID YOU KNOW? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.
