Making Connections, One Client at a Time Connections of Cumberland County By Crystal Bennett Self-determination, collaboration and support can quickly turn situations around for women and children at Connections’ Day Resource Center. These same assets, put into action, helped Connections open in the first place. Research on the basic needs of local women and children, conducted by the Women's Giving Circle of Cumberland County, led to the development of the Connections of Cumberland County. Several circle members could not ignore the alarming number of children experiencing homelessness and took the lead in the community to identify gaps in service. After years of researching, planning and establishing connections with other service providers to reduce duplication, Cumberland County’s only walk-in DRC with case management opened July, 2014, credited for helping hundreds of women and children in its tenure. The Fragile Relationship of Man and Nature A BALANCE WORTH PROTECTING By Jonelle Kimbrough Adam and Eve. Antony and Cleopatra. Romeo and Juliet. wTlohoenrogedledpa-ecfcopkcienkreaa.dned dthe A bird and a tree may not immediately come to mind when one considers famous couples, but in the Sandhills of North Carolina, these ecological partners are undeniably fabled. Our unique landscape thrives on a delicate balance between the woodpeckers, longleaf pines and fires, and now, more than ever, the people with whom they share their world. Red-cockaded woodpeckers are devoted but difficult companions. They construct their nests, called cavities, only in old-growth, fire-dependent longleaf pines. While the birds and the trees are faithful to each other, their relationship has been threatened by a formidable force: humans. At one time, longleaf pine forests covered 90 million acres of land in the southeastern United States. These forests are one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world — second only to tropical rainforests. Their bountiful natural resources were instrumental to the settlement of the Cape Fear River area of North Carolina, but indiscriminate timber harvests, agricultural pursuits, urban development and fire suppression have decimated a habitat that now rests on only three million acres across the entire nation. Red-cockaded woodpeckers were once quite common in the South, too. They are a vital keystone species in their domains because other creatures in the longleaf pine forest benefit from their unusual nesting customs. Unfortunately, their populations have steadily declined as the woodlands have disappeared. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service declared them to be endangered in 1970. Jonelle Kimbrough, a WVM contributor, is the executive director of Sustainable Sandhills, a nonprofit organization creating resilient environmental, economic and social resources for current and future generations in the Sandhills of North Carolina. She worked in the Department of Defense sustainability programs for 10 years before joining Sustainable Sandhills in 2019. 10 | F E B R UA RY 2 0 2 0

The Sandhills are home to one of the last Join Us tracts of viable real estate for the fastidious red-cockaded woodpeckers. Now, our region and 2020 its residents are charged with the restoration Gallery Events and preservation of this vanishing habitat, as well as its most important avian. April 7 June 23 Fort Bragg famously faced that charge in 1990. October 6 The USFWS issued a damaging biological opinion against the post for failure to defend its longleaf pine-laden lands. The opinion all but crippled training missions at the world’s largest military installation and mandated programs to recover local populations of red-cockaded woodpeckers. Since then, Fort Bragg and partners, including Sustainable Sandhills, Sandhills Area Land Trust, North Carolina Forest Service, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and The Nature Conservancy, have become the woodpecker’s most passionate advocates. These agencies protect public lands and longleaf pine forests. Their species monitoring and habitat management initiatives — especially prescribed fires — are now models of conservation. In the budding months of spring, longleaf pine forests in the Sandhills are often ablaze with rivers of flames, where foresters conduct controlled burns. Prescribed fires are essential for the health of the habitat. Fire opens the canopy, enhances seed establishment and controls “duff,” or the brush that provides fuel for destructive wildfires. As a result of these efforts, local populations of red-cockaded woodpeckers have rebounded. Fort Bragg lifted training restrictions in woodpecker habitats in 2012, and the soldiers and the birds have learned to live in harmony. Yet, contrary to popular belief, red-cockaded woodpeckers are still endangered, and the long- term wellness of our longleaf pine forests is still a concern. The people of the Sandhills will be instrumental in the future of our region’s inimitable environment. We can all strive to protect our forests from development and support the prescribed burning of public and private lands. With a bit of care from both Mother Nature and our community, the red-cockaded woodpecker and the longleaf pine will be together forever. 2 0 2 0 F E B R UA RY | 11

By Sheila Hanrick February brings the season of love and romance. Naturally, with spring on the coattails of this otherwise cold month, warmer weather soon ushers in another season — that of weddings. As is commonly known, couples wishing to forgo the traditional march down the aisle can opt for a “courthouse” wedding at the Register of Deeds office in downtown Fayetteville. Marriages are also performed by the Magistrate at the Cumberland County Detention Center, hence providing a “jailhouse” wedding instead. Cape Fear Botanical Garden offers another, and perhaps better, choice for couples looking to make their special day short and sweet. This choice is a new take on the wedding scene: pop-up favor bubbles and a small cake in the base package. After wedding days in the Garden. Girlfriends Doing Disney A Half-Marathon Race and Friendship Rite of Passage By Pam Ellis-Phipps O ur relationships def ine our lives. Girlfriends love going on trips to Disney World. My husband provides comfort and companionship. My children give me a deep sense of purpose and pride. My family loves me unconditionally; where they are is where I call home. I cherish these relationships, but my circle of girlf riends keeps me sane. In 2015, I decided that I wanted to do the Disney Princess half-marathon. Was I a runner? Nope. I was your standard couch potato, but that didn’t stop me from signing up and dragging my sister along with me. The Disney Princess half-marathon occurs in February, but sign-up happens the July prior. It typically sells out within a few hours. For the 2016 race, my sister, who lives in Florida, and I were able to snag two spots and happily started training. RunDisney provides a training schedule to all who sign up. On the morning of the race, we started the race together, but I insisted Tina go ahead after about a mile. Disney puts on an entertaining race with bands and princes and princesses lining the course, so there is plenty to distract yourself from the fact that you are trying to complete 13.1 miles. Tina finished the race, but I was “swept” after 9.5 miles. Much of the course is on the interstate, so participants in RunDisney races must maintain a 16-minute mile. I was so proud of my sister and had so much fun that the disappointment I felt lasted less time than the sore muscles. I also found that my friendship with my sister strengthened through this experience. Pam Ellis-Phipps is a WVM contributing writer and the executive assistant to the Provost at Methodist University. She, her sister Tina and friends run, walk and travel together often. 20 | F E B R UA RY 2 0 2 0

F ast forward to July 2016, and I knew I wanted to try again. This time I roped my friends Kimberly and Patty into going with me. We secured three spots. It was a first attempt at a half-marathon for both f riends. Although we all live in Fayetteville, we mostly trained separately. Kimberly was already a runner and Patty, like my sister, could walk a much faster pace than me. The date for the 2017 race arrived, and off we went to Orlando. We were staying again at the Shades of Green resort. When we arrived, we found that our reservation had been made for the day before and we didn’t have a room. You can imagine the stress that followed! To utilize the busses to the start line, participants must stay at a Disney property. We had people back home searching for hotel rooms and calling Shades of Green to try to fix the problem. In the end, we talked our way into a room at Shades and collapsed onto couches and beds once we were in. In addition to transportation to the race, Disney properties provide a bus to Disney Springs, which we took advantage of several times. We shopped, ate and laughed together. This trip was an experience from beginning to the end which had results similar to 2016. Kimberly and Patty finished, and I was swept before the end of the race. I still had so much fun with my friends that I cannot regret the experience, and come July 2017, I signed up yet again. Tina and Patty signed up for the 2018 race, both finished, and I was swept for the third time. Although I have never completed the Disney Princess half-marathon, who knows? I may still sign up at some point and try again. The Princess Half is still on my bucket list. I can’t recommend race vacations with girlfriends highly enough as a way to connect and bond. From the Ribbon Walk for Cancer done with friends in memory of a precious friend we lost to cancer and the hilly Run the Bluegrass in my home state of Kentucky to the daunting Disney Princess Half, I’ve discovered a fun way to bond with my girlfriends, exercise and vacation, too! I’m still not a runner. I have walked all my races. If you’re a slow walker like me, it’s still possible to enjoy these kinds of trips. Grab your girlfriends and hit the road! I promise you won’t regret it. 2 0 2 0 F E B R UA RY | 21
