CONTROLLING A SPILL Safe Chemical A DIVISION OF CARTIER CHEMICALS Spill Response HSE recommendation on chemical spills r Liquid spills involving hazardous materials should first be contained to prevent the spread of the material to other areas. r Once the hazardous material has been contained the material should be neutralised to render it safe. r Acids and alkalis should be treated with appropriate neutralising agents. Due to the differing properties of the various groups of chemical, an appropriate treatment strategy with suitable chemicals should be established in each case. r Treated material should be absorbed onto inert carrier material to allow the material to be cleared up and removed to a safe place for disposal or further treatment as appropriate. r Once the material has been treated the cleared up area should be washed with large volumes of water r Vytac neutralisation products are recognised as an important element of spill response safety. r Vytac’s unique colour indicator systems allow for safe, easily visualised neutralisation r Disposal costs can be reduced by converting hazardous waste into general waste CHEMICAL NEUTRALISATION PROCEDURES FOR SMALL CHEMICAL SPILLS 1. Identify appropriate neutralisation 2. The application should commence from the outside of the spill, working inwards as this reduces the risk of the responder contacting untreated material 3. Sprinkle neutraliser on chemical until desired colour change indicates complete neutralisation 4. The non hazardous compound can now be swept up and disposed of through the general waste system Acid Vytac ACX Alkali - Vytac CS FOR CHEMICAL SPILLS UP TO 20 LITRES 4. Add the appropriate Vytac neutraliser until the colour change indicator shows neutralisation is complete 1. Vacuum the spilled chemicals using a chemical wet vacuum 2. Dispense the aggressive chemical into a container for treatment 5. Dispose of the neutralised non hazardous chemical through 3. Dilute the chemical to the required dilution to prevent heat general waste system. build up On adding Vytac ACX to an acid, the pale pink/orange colour will gradually change. ACID NEUTRALISATION Continue to add and mix Vytac ACX until the colour is permanently red indicating a neutral solution. SODIUM HYDROXIDE NEUTRALISATION On adding Vytac CS to an alkali, the purple colour will gradually change. Continue to add and mix Vytac CS until the colour is permanently dark yellow. FOR CHEMICAL SPILLS GREATER THAN 20 LITRES r Call Spill Response Team r Spill Training for chemical spills accredited by British Safety Industry Federation is available for operatives handling chemicals. 112

Site Survey Assessment Responsibility for the correct handling and storage of liquids lies with the owner organisation (including protection from wilful acts of vandalism). The pollution of both land and water is regulated against by law and whether accidental or deliberate, can result in prosecution leading to fines and other related costs both tangible and intangible (i.e. damage or harm to both image and reputation). The Environment Agencies policy is to vigorously pursue prosecution of both company and individuals responsible for any infringements of these regulations. We are able to assist you in identifying your needs and requirements and in finding solutions to your spillage problems with the following service. A site assessment of your company’s current status to deal with a significant spill. The assessment key aims are to: q Review all aspects of spillage response on site including liquid types and quantities q Review how liquids are handled and stored, particularly the condition and suitability of secondary containment systems or fixed bunds q Identify potential routes for the escape of liquids from site q Identify potential spill hazards and or sensitive areas q Audit current spillage response products and equipment q Identify any shortcomings or non-compliance with statutory regulations/legislation q Provide a comprehensive report incorporating images, recommendations for proposed additions and improvements. Please see example on the following pages q Address specific training needs This report can help provide the basis for an Environmental Management Spill Contingency Plan and can be used towards your ISO 14001 compliance to improve upon your sites current level of spill awareness and response. Please contact your local distributor to arrange a site visit by one of our experienced spill control specialists. 133
