ZERO RTI FOR DMU ROLLING STOCK! i is for INNOVATION WWW.FLOTECINDUSTRIAL.COM/RAIL
Return to Idle (RTI) Issues with DMU Rolling Stock Historically, DMU’s have encountered RTI issues in warmer months. “ Causes are usually geographic topography (such as steep landscapes and inclines) or seasonal contaminants (such as pollen) or a combination of the two. Inevitably, this leads to end-user delays through to train cancellations which results in passenger disruption as well as significant costs to the rail rolling stock operator. Such failures are typical across most DMU assets. WWW.FLOTECINDUSTRIAL.COM/RAIL
The Flotec Rail Division Solution The underlying cause of RTI is not often clear where it can be one, a few or all the components within the system. Flotec has developed a series of innovative solutions to address seaFsolonatleDcMsUuRgTgIecsomtspltihcaetioinnss:tallation of the RailtecTM coolant hose and associated bc•••luaARHrmeddysdvepearnronivnsscotegaiwdrtisMcFhyaHainsilonstCsteteeomnngAatpusrnopacltleirocaantoiotvenesericnogmleeaskufcrhee n•oVna-rfiaabilleuDreissplabceetmwenetePnumscph(VeDdPu) lIentdegoravteiornhauls. • Variable Pitch Fan (VPF) Innovation and Installation Flotec has designed an engineering solution to combat traditional rail specific complaints ensuring rolling stock fleet reliability between scheduled overhauls. Reliable for over 750,000 miles of engine use! Hydrostatic Hose Solutions Poor routing and support are major factors in premature hose failures. Shorter hose lengths to reduce the amount of material and weight whilst improving the routing to avoid ballast strikes. Utilises correct clamping and bracketing, eliminating the need for spiral wrapping. The RailtecTM MED-HT hose can withstand temperatures of up to 150oC! 6I0MC0PY,0UC0LLS0EES Railtec TM THREE times longer lifetime than other hoses on the market! Who says leak-free is not guaranteed? Within the MegaCrimp® is a remarkable ‘C-insert’ component ensuring the con- nection stays round to the shape of the hose, eliminating the issue of the ‘polygon’ effect which is known to contribute to leak paths. Reservoir Maintenance Cleaning reservoirs is often overlooked where Flotec has witnessed some DMU reservoirs not being maintained for up to twenty years. Overhauling of the reservoirs is offered as a basic level solution. Neglecting the reservoirs can lead to a build-up of debris resulting in component contamination and failure. Flotec can either overhaul or replace the reservoirs to ensure optimum efficiency.
Fan Control The speed of a rolling stocks engine fan is paramount for overall engine efficiency. Original electronic fan controls proved unreliable and were replaced with valve thermostatic controls. However, these in themselves have created issues, where they fail to work to the correct cut in temperature With advancements in electronic fan control technology, Flotec recommends this as a more reliable solution. Upgrade to a Variable Displacement Pump (VDP) Traditional Fixed Displacement Pump Issues: • The pump output is dependent on engine speed • If the engine is running slow, the fan will also run slow Installing a variable displacement pump (VDP) modification ensures that when cooling is not required, the pump automatically shuts down and only pumps oil around the system where necessary. This is successful in reducing unnecessary heat generation, less wear and tear of all components, thus, creating a more optimum engine performance, and fuel savings.
i is for INNOVATION! Variable Pitch Fan “ Committed to capitalising on the latest rail technology, Flotec recommends installing a variable pitch fan! More traditional fans are fixed and only draw air in through the radiators. These existing fans create an efficient cooling process, but due to the one rotational direction, also pull contaminants into the radiator fins. Blockage of the radiator very quickly effects the air flow and the radiator becomes inefficient, forcing the system to work harder to maintain the cooling temperature to a point where the thermostatic control engages, shutting down the engine. WWW.FLOTECINDUSTRIAL.COM/RAIL
The blades of the variable pitch fan rotate on their own axis to change the pitch and reverse through the cross position. This guarantees the air will always be increased and in the optimum position to produce maximum air flow when in both cooling and cleaning modes. A hard-wired fan control system installed Fitting a VPF effectively maintains into the existing electronics of the train radiator cooling efficiency by ensures that the ‘cleaning’ process is not eliminating blocking contaminants, engaged when the vehicle is either maintaining air flow through stationary or drawing into a station. the radiator, increasing energy savings and eradicating RTIs. Installing a variable pitch fan reduces the frequency of radiator washing which in turn, reduces damage and maintenance costs whilst extending their lifespan and effectiveness.
“ Flotec offers rail clients a plethora of differing methods to get their rolling stock fleets up to speed! 1 The four levels of modification will suit different rolling stock operators, for their varying requirements such as geographic location and natural environments or cost. Flotec can advise on the most appropriate option for rail clients. Leave the system as standard, renew the hoses, service the reservoir, check system pres- sure and performance check. 2 Modify the system. Hose improvement, reservoir service, remove the thermo valve and pipework, fit electronic fan control valve, in place of thermo valve. WWW.FLOTECINDUSTRIAL.COM/RAIL
3 “ Flotec supports rail clients by 4 creating all necessary and compliant documentation. • Renew any hoses and service the reservoirs • Replace the fixed displacement fan pump with a variable displacement fan pump • Replace the Thermo valve with a thermistor • Fit a programmable CED controller, to electronically control the fan speed in relation to the engine coolant temperature, by varying the displacement of the new fan pump. In the event of an electrical failure the fan will revert to full speed. The same as option 3 but also adding a reversible pitch fan. This will help keep the radiator clean.

Features and Benefits: Thermal Actuators with Elastomer Insert The variable pitch control is completely reliable. Flotec uses thermal actuators for the adjustment of the blade angles. These wax driven devices have proven reliability. In a defined temperature range, the wax expands and moves a small piston incrementally, which adjusts the angle of the blades from a low to a steep angle. Since all the blades are connected via a piston, the synchronization of their movement is ensured. This gives the system the highest possible level of reliability. Less power consumption! The power consumption of a fan depends on the angle of its blades. The variable pitch fan automatically adjusts its blades depending on the cooling requirements, it also automatically adjusts its power consumption. By using a low blade angle, savings of up to 60% in horse power consumption is possible.
