The pièce de résistance of his home is the dining room. Hidden behind a sliding glass For Melvyn Yap, this preference took the door, the divider was modelled after form of the combination of an izakaya, an traditional Japanese shoji screens. Typically informal Japanese bar, and a ryokan, a fashioned from latticed bamboo, washi, or traditional Japanese inn. Having lived in his mulberry paper, Yap’s interior designer, Eric home for 17 years with his mother, he decided Chua of interior design company Sync Interior, to make a change after noticing how the place opted for a plexiglass alternative and hand- was falling apart. The original intention was to pasted shoji paper embellished with gold sell, but it didn’t take — even after numerous flakes on one side to complete the traditional look. When the doors are closed, all outside “A HOME IS A REFLECTION OF HOW YOU WANT TO LIVE YOUR LIFE, AND I WANT MINE TO BE PEACEFUL AND QUIET” — MELVYN YAP From the thoughtfully noise is effectively shut out. Yap shares, “While the look is style are expanded in traditional, there’s actually modern technology Melvyn Yap’s home incorporated into this space.” Reinforced with a customised table, the counter can be raised (or concealed) with the flip of a switch. And hanging overhead is a short noren curtain with the word “izakaya” printed in hiragana, as if it wasn’t already obvious that this is where friends settle comfortably when they come over to drink. When there are guests, Yap takes delight in laying out his extensive collection of crockery and glassware. While Western dishes and plates are usually presented in sets, 181
LIFESTYLE/SPACE Japanese tableware subverts the uniform aesthetic with a plethora of shapes, sizes and designs. It’s the most personal element of Japanese dining and the sense of customisation inspires a spark of fun and even intimacy. Yap explains, “I do it so each person can identify their plate, chopsticks and cups at a glance. I have many mismatched plates from Japan and I love to buy something different every time I find myself back in Japan.” Indeed, Yap’s home is filled with things he brought back from Japan with every trip. An inky black kimono adorned with aureate details is displayed proudly on a standing emonkake, and you’ll also be able to find a traditional paper lantern in red and white, novelty hina dolls and a hanging lamp customised to look like shimenawa, the sacred ropes often found at Shinto shrines, Torii gates, trees and landmark rocks. Yap’s love for Japan extends past the material and has also resulted in a series of sake sommelier certifications. What started as an accidental accreditation (lured by a friend on the pretense of drinking) earned him a WSET Level 3 award, an advanced level of qualification worthy of professionals working with sake. He has finished over 1,000 bottles of sake, after all. Looking back now, with four years of hindsight and the current context of the pandemic, Yap shares, “I’m really glad I renovated. It feels like I am having a holiday every day.” He adds, “A home is a reflection of how you want to live your life, and I want mine to be peaceful and quiet.” And when the shoji screens are closed, and the traditional sounds of hogaku fill his home, it’s easy for Yap to imagine that he’s back in his favourite country. It’s a shared sentiment for Maverick Mak. As a corporate high-flyer in the travel and hospitality arena, it’s no surprise Mak has a great passion for globetrotting. So much so that when he was planning to refurbish his condominium, he looked to the hotels he frequented — the ones that felt like home. Mak goes on to share, “There is no shortage of great design hotels and resorts and it is almost impossible to visit them all. But the few brands that have inspired me are Aman and Alila.” 182
SPACE/LIFESTYLE Inspired by the architectural likes of luxury hotels, Maverick Mak’s home sees the union of industrial and raw materials that lend a certain heft and substantial dignity to the space “IT IS A PLACE OF LOVE, Reason being, while hotel designs are typically incorporated to lend a certain heft and A PLACE WHERE commercial so as to cater to transient substantial dignity to the space. Which to me is essential in home design.” This sense of serenity is reinforced with the addition of a skylight. Taking cues from the seaside homes found on the coasts of Australia, the generous natural light lends a sense of airy openness and creates an element of repose and quietude. The same balanced philosophy extends to the other parts of Chu’s home as well. The living room is vacant, save for a hanging projector doubling as a TV, and the clutter of children’s books (belonging to his two kids). Upstairs, the colour palette shifts to a darkened design that’s reminiscent of an explorer’s workspace. A study shared with his wife is finished with strong, durable elements like shelves clad in dark wood, a handsome workbench, an emerald-shaded banker’s lamp and an antique apothecary chest, complete with labelled drawers. Under “Brain”, you will find a transparent bottle holding a lump from his neck that was surgically removed — or as Chu jokes, “It’s a part of my brain.” The drawer labelled “Ink” contains a handful of pens wrapped together by a rubber band, while “Faces” houses a stacked pile of identity cards and passport photos; and “Perseverance” holds a shiny metal sphere that was made from a sheet of aluminum foil and relentless hammering. Each shelf holds a memory in time and it’s clear that this chest functions as a physical catalogue of his life and experiences. Indeed, no matter what glossy concept a bachelor pad takes on, whether sleek and stylish, traditionally masculine or hedonistic and high-living, these living spaces are also ultimately liberating because they increasingly make room for sentiment, nostalgia and lived out experiences in tangible form. As Chu simplifies, “Every addition to my home is [there] because there is a good memory associated with it.”
