The two pieces are joined in the middle inorder to allow turning capabilities and optimal balance. If you want to moveforward, you apply pressure to the front of your feet (Like tippy toeing). If youwish to go backwards, you apply pressure to the heel of you feet. In order toturn left, you would apply pressure to the front of your right foot OR applypressure to the back of your left foot. In order to turn right, you would applypressure to the front of your left foot OR apply pressure to the back of yourright foot. While, this sounds complicated, it's simple once you are on thedevice.
