Based on the CEFR descriptors A key to success! Hands on! 5 is a collective work created and designed by the Department of Educational Research of Editorial Eduvisión. Author: Jeannette Soto Segura Language Consultants: Jaime Morales Brenes Elaine Schlabach evn eduvisión

tBhaeseCdEFoRn Structure descriptors Hands on! is a six-level cohesive program that A key to success! guides students into the process of learning English in a developmentally age-appropriate pace through different evn eduvisión activities or tasks and specific meaningful contexts and real-life scenarios. By using the Communicative Approach and the Action-Oriented Approach, students will be able to interact and develop the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in a pleasant and exciting way through activities such as dialogues, songs, games, projects, among others. What is more, the program enables students to use the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as a way to learn English in a world that demands fast and effective communication. Main components Hands on! includes essential questions, dialogues, songs, scenarios, vocabulary in context, work-in-pair activities, and surveys to keep students willing to use the language more and more. Age-appropriate exercises, appealing songs and games introduce young students to experience English by practicing the four skills. CEvery unit encloses –beyond the school activities– critical thinking tasks, cooperative OSTA Rlearning and systematic grammar activities integrating all four skills. As a consequence, ICAthese abilities favor linguistic competences in a pedagogical scaffolding that will allow learners to use their abilities when using English as a second language. At the end of every unit, they can self-evaluate their own progress using the CEFR descriptors in order to monitor their own development. Opening Unit: Each unit begins with nit Go Green su ProhibUi1dathe themes. A picture-scenario allows Themes Making the Connection 1. Our Environment: students to activate previous knowledge 2. INFO My Project Composting for Waste Disposal One major way we can help Earth is through composting our food waste; the benefits are terrific. Generally, compost is made in large bins. On the Internet, research videos on different ways people are creating their compost spaces and why it is helpful for the environment. Next, you will look at the layout of a composting project you can start in your school and your home. There are two major components to healthy compost: green stuff (grass trimmings and food scraps) that provides moisture; and brown stuff (dry leaves, nut shells, or recyclable paper) that absorbs some of that moisture. You will want to layer these components in your bin along with a layer of soil. What you will need: • A large, airtight bin and lid • Soil • Something to drill holes in the container bottom COSTA RICA• Some sort of tray for potential fluid leakage • A way to keep the container elevated • A tool for stirring • A good place to store your compost container; it can be close to the Prohibida suschool cafeteria. Optional: 1. Decorating your bin can be fun! reproducciónWhat you will do: 2. Begin by setting up your tray and elevation pieces. This would also be Edición para revisiónthe easiest time to decorate! del docente 28

3. Next, drill about 15-25 holes in the bottom of the bin. Too much INFO moisture can make your compost rot, and you won’t be able to use it. Be sure to keep in mind the placement of the materials used to Unit 1 elevate the bin so they don’t block the holes. 4. Now you can begin layering. Start with about six centimeters of brown stuff (dead leaves, shredded/torn up newspaper, junk mail). Then comes the daily green – your banana peels, egg shells, vegetable peelings, and so on. Layer three will be brown again. You’ll always want more brown than green to avoid too much moisture. Layer four is three centimeters or so of soil. 5. Give everything a stir, and that’s it! Keep layering like this daily/ weekly until your bin is full. 6. Once full, stir occasionally and check for moisture (if it is too dry pour some water… not too much) for a couple of weeks until all you have left is a bucket of nutrient-dense soil! If you live in a dry area or don’t create much moist food waste, you may need to occasionally add water. You’ll know you’ve added too much if it leaks from the holes. For leaks and bad smells, add more brown stuff. Some people recommend having two sets of compost; while COone is full and processing, you can start filling up the other. If STA Ryou don’t have a yard with flowers and vegetables to use your ICAcompost material, try donating your compost to a community garden, using it for growing indoor plants, or starting a garden of your own!
