This Annual Report will discuss the excellent workand activities carried out to support people affectedby cancer by the SMISS from January 2015 toDecember 2015. It will give a background to and adescription of the service in 2015. The report willlook at all the work undertaken by the serviceincluding the excellent work of its numerousvolunteers. The report will use a combination ofquantitative and qualitative data and a descriptionto give a rich picture of how it supports peopleaffected by cancer. The report will also use serviceuser feedback in an attempt to show how its work has contributed towards improved outcomes forpeople affected by cancer. Salford has the second highest rate for new cancers in the country andalthough treatments continue to improve late presentation of patients in Salford means significantlyhigher mortality rates than the national average (1). Along with partners in public health and thirdsector organisations, the SMISS is well placed to improve the cancer outcomes of Salford residentsby encouraging a greater awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and encouraging peoplewith such symptoms to seek the appropriate medical support. With the numbers of people livingwith cancer anticipated to rise at rate of 3.2% every year (2) and a growing appetite to improve thesupport on offer to people living with cancer, the SMISS must ensure that it continues to grow anddevelop its survivorship support. The service aims to broaden its reach into the community, and is inthe process of widening awareness of the support throughout Salford. The SMISS promoteshealthy living and cancer awareness in areas of deprivation and has continued its partnershipworking with Salford City Reds Foundation and Greater Manchester Public Health Network todeliver healthy living and cancer awareness campaigns. 5CancerLine 0808 808 00 00 www.macmillan.org.ukMacmillan Cancer Support, registered charity number 261017. Staff and volunteers at the SMISS understand that adiagnosis of cancer can affect many aspects of lifeand often clients need practical support. Thispractical support can vary enormously and staff atthe centre will endeavour to either provide this helpor refer clients to services that can help. Some ofthese services include: Macmillan Solutions, CALL,British Red Cross, AGE UK and Buttle UK.During 2015 the SMSS has continued to grow itsvolunteer driver scheme which provides transport to hospital for people having cancer treatment.During 2014 this service made 220 trips covering 4,708 miles. The SMSS volunteer driver scheme uses a community based model that currently operates in twoareas of Salford. Each area is supported by a community group of drivers who live within thecommunity they serve. The groups provide transport to people in their own postcode, funding isprovided through their own fundraising efforts and the drivers are reimbursed via their committee.Patient bookings are made via the Salford Macmillan Information and Support Centre. Look Good Feel Better celebrated their 6th year at Salford and the workshops have supported 184 women attended our 20 workshops in 2015. 8CancerLine 0808 808 00 00 www.macmillan.org.ukMacmillan Cancer Support, registered charity number 261017. 2015 saw our Macmillan community allotment grow from strength to strength and our team ofdedicated volunteers ensured that the allotment was used to grow a variety of produce and gave allthose involved an opportunity to get outdoors, get some exercise and share their experience in whatcan only be described as an urban oasis. Produce from the allotment has been sold to raise fundsfor more tools and seeds. Let’s hope 2016 brings another bumper crop! 11CancerLine 0808 808 00 00 www.macmillan.org.ukMacmillan Cancer Support, registered charity number 261017. Isle of Man charity number 604.
