PONTIFICAL AND ROYAL UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS College of Nursing A.Y. 2021 - 2022, 1st Term MESSAGE An older client’s problem is a caregiver’s problem. The older client’s safety would be of great concern to home-based caregivers as the physiological changes of aging place them at risk for injuries or accidents. There is a high prevalence of injuries among older adults that occur within the household, which pose serious health concerns as they can escalate to disabling sequelae, morbidity, or mortality (Moncatar et al., 2020). With the progressive functional decline in older clients, there is now a greater dependence on their caregivers–with a significant responsibility being ensuring their safety in the household. Hands-on care and constant supervision needed to prevent injury pose a challenge to caregivers as feelings of physical, mental, or emotional exhaustion and stress may arise (Gérain, 2019). Furthermore, the lack of knowledge on care provision can also pose a challenge to caregivers (Strommen et al., 2020). Your contribution in spreading information for the education of caregivers to ensure the older population’s safety through preventive measures can help reduce the burden they carry.
