ABSTRACT Petrosains Math Carnival 2015 is an extension from Magical Math 2014 which received positive and encouraging response from school group participants. Petrosains Math Carnival 2015 is specially designed to expose participants with learning approach ‘Hands-on, Minds-on, Hearts- on’.Internal 1

OBJECTIVES To generate Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) through activities/programs which inculcate participant’s creativity & innovation in solving problem and making decision. School activities were organized particularly for primary andsecondary school students during weekdays, from Tuesday(28072015) to Friday (31072015).Maths in the Mall is an activity implemented specifically forprimary school students, aged from 10 to 12 years old. This is a“shopping” themed activity where students get to learnmathematics by buying goods using mock money provided at the‘mall’. For this activity, students need to buy goods according tomathematics questions given in order to answer them. Clothes Shop PETRO Shop Just Desserts Habiba Shop ShopInternal 11

Juice Box Geometry require students to construct a juicebox which can contain the amount of juice given by using the leastpackaging material. For this activity, students learn aboutmanufacturing process of a juice box packaging. Creative, practicaland no leakage would be an added value to students’ product! Thisactivity is designed for lower form students which are form 1 to form3 students. Many students managed to construct the juice box wellwith various creative designs!Internal 12

Booth ActivitiesThere were six outdoor booths opened during Math Carnival 2015 – HatchDay & Raising Chicken, Square-Wheeled Tricycle, Movement, Math Magic,Puzzle and Probability.Hatch Day & Raising ChickenThis booth for visitors to discover fertile chicken egg developing intochicks. For hatch day’s activity, visitors are required to select an egg andcandle it to identify the air sac space area and guess the stage chickenembryo!In raising chicken activity, visitors get to discover day-old chicken weight byweighing at least 5 different day-old-chicken weight and plot a growthchart. Many visitors who visited this booth get a chance to experiencein handling the real chicken themselves!Internal 13

Square-Wheeled Tricycle This is a booth where visitors get to explore on how square-wheeled tricycle cycle smoothly on a special track which suits the wheel shape.Internal 14

MovementIn movement activity booth, there were five sub activities prepared forthe visitors. Among the activities are Colour Sequence, Jumping Pipe,Magic Square, Math War Game and Math Bowling Hula Hoop.Magic Square and Jumping Pipe are ongoing activities while otheractivities were run on time slots.All activities in movement booth, generally, involve coordination,sequence and arrangement. Math Magic Hi-Lo Magic 3 Bottle CrateMath Magic booth promotes activity that are mainly Longestusing poker cards tricks. Each activities need two Railwaypersons to play against each other.This booth is one of favourite booth among visitorsespecially during the weekend. Children weredelighted over card tricks show by our sciencecommunicator.Magic 3, Hi-Lo, Longest Railway and Mind Reading hastheir own significant tricks by using calculations.Internal 16

PuzzleA good majority of people enjoyed puzzlebooth activities as to compare to otherbooths according to survey done.There were four activities in this booth –Match Sticks Puzzle, Origami, Tangrams &Colourful Geometric Creations.The main attraction at this booth is wherechildren gets to explore things differently.They were given options in each activity.For instance, colourful geometric creationsand tangrams, there were differentdiagrams and need to arrange the blocksaccording to the diagrams.Children’s cognitive capability was tested insuch activities with fun manner!Internal 17

ProbabilityIn probability booth, all activities require two players for each game. InLeprechauns Luck, Tallest Building, Marker and Skunk, players aredepending on dices.Each number of movements or steps, depends on the two dices thrown. Intallest building, the “building” was constructed based on the sum ofnumber on both dices.One must have a good “luck” in order to be a winner!Leprechauns Luck Tallest Building Marker SkunkInternal 18

FAMILYACTIVITIESFAMILY ACTIVITIESAll indoor and outdoor stage activities throughout the event onthe weekend is considered as family activities. Activities at thestage were done in a larger number of audience, unlike at thebooths.Participants were put in a team of a family to join activitiesconducted by the science facilitator. Tangram Challenge andGeometry Creation were the two activities run as stage activitieswhich also been conducted at the activity booths.Other activities include Sifira Battleship, Juice Box Geometry, PriceIt Right, Minute 2 Win It, Speed Trap Quiz, Human Bingo, MathShow & Magic Show.Internal 19

KIDSACTIVITIESSifira BattleshipParticipants for this activity was instructed toarrange 4 x 2 battleship size to attack thechallenger’s ship. Participants start to attackchallenger’s ship by mentioning the coordinateof the ship!The winner is then determined by the total ofpoints collected from the “war”.Juice Box GeometryA creative, relevant and no leakage are theimportant elements for a good juice box. Manygroups of family managed to construct a juicebox without having science communicatordetailed guidance.This activity was full of excitement during theirjuice box being tested.Internal 20

Price It RightIn this stage activity, participants need to guess the price of the items usingmathematical equations.Minute 2 Win ItComplete the challenge in 60 seconds!Speed Trap QuizHuman BingoParticipants were given a set of card number and instructed to arrange it in 4 x4 order.Math Show & Magic ShowMath and Magic Show were conducted by our science communicator. It isanother interactive ways to approach participants that come from differentbackground.Internal 21

KIDSACTIVITIESKIDS ACTIVITIESKids’ activities were designed to generate interest amongchildren to learn mathematics with fun learning approaches. Weinitiated our mathematics carnival by coordinating workshopactivities for students from both primary and secondary schoolon weekdays.Coloring activity and Kaedah Mokhdar are the two activitiesimplemented in our program especially for kids.Internal 22
