SPIKE STITCHES When you make a product using different motifs joined together, it is best to use the same colour for the last round to make the joining neater. Continuing the project It isn’t uncommon for motifs to be worked in different colours for each round that you do, which is what makes them so perfect for using up the ends of your various yarns. Depending on the effect you wish to achieve, you could alternate colours, you could never use the same colour twice, or you can come up with a combination and order of colours that you can change per square to create a really neat-looking blanket, for instance. For the cleanest result, turn your work every round and fasten on at different points each round; this will stop any wobbly edge where every fasten on happens, and the joins will be less noticeable if they aren’t all in one place! To start each round, fasten on your yarn by drawing up a loop and crocheting over the start of the yarn as you work around the motif. This will make it extra secure, as you don’t want it falling apart, and with all the ends that you will end up with connecting different colours, it will take less time to darn in any loose ends if you simply crochet them in instead! Top motif tips 03Go large! You don’t need to stick to small motifs. Whoever said they didn’t want a massive granny 01Avoid having to darn With many motifs you will square? Instead of making them with only four or end up with a lot of starts and ends of yarn. We five rounds, make them larger, and then join them cannot stress enough how much easier life will be together. You may even find it easier to make bigger when you come to finish up your project if you projects faster if you aren’t having to fiddle each time crochet over any loose ends as you work. Starting you join a new colour and get into the groove. If you yarns are easy to hide in the new colour, and end think your work is starting to skew because of the way yarns will soon disappear if you crochet over those the stitches are worked slightly to the right each time, as well. By doing this you not only save yourself a simply flip your work over and this will save it! lot of time and effort, but you might not even have to pick up a darning needle if you’re meticulous 04Ignore rounded corners It’s a simple fact that when about it. you crochet a square, the corner will always look a little rounded, unless you have blocked it. But don’t 02Use the same edging colour While you can make worry, this is completely normal. When you connect motifs in various colours, it is much easier to join the squares together they will form the right shape and them together neatly with near-invisible seams if you don’t even realise they were ever rounded in the you use the same colour on the final round. This first place. If you have created one massive motif then means you can use this colour everywhere when you can block the motif instead to form the corners. joining your motifs without having to worry about it looking obvious. PICOT EDGING Give your work a delicate finish with a picot edging, often used on clothing and lace pieces Quite simply, picot edging is a collection of chain stitches that can be added to the edge of your crochet project. They are brought together by a double crochet (dc) into the next stitch (or into the bottom of the chain) or by skipping stitches to create larger loops, also know as open picot. It has the benefit of being really simple to do while managing to look incredibly effective. You can make your picot stitches as long or as short as you like, from using only two extra chains to create a small bobble or a whole load of them to create a fun fringe effect. If you are following a pattern it should state what type of picot edging, and whether to go into the bottom of the chain or into the next stitch (or, of course, how many stitches to skip!). To adjust the width add sts to the foundation chain in multiples of 3; to adjust length add rows. Don’t forget you will need more yarn to make a bigger sleeping bag. For baby’s safety it is important to ensure the bag is not so large they can slip down too far as this can cause them to get overheated. As with any bedding, their face should remain above the cover which should tuck under their arms, and make sure they are placed with their feet are at the end of their crib, Moses basket, pram etc. Simple Steps to Crochet 145

STITCH PATTERN GALLERY Armed with only a few simple stitches in your repertoire, there are many pretty and interesting fabrics you can make With just three basic crochet stitches – double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr) and half treble crochet (htr) – you can create a really wide variety of patterns, and these can be used to make many different projects. With these easy stitch patterns you could create a dishcloth, a scarf or even a blanket – anything rectangular in shape. These are all items that don’t require strict measurements, so would make a great starter project if you’re trying to improve your tension and technique. To start off these patterns, make a foundation chain to your desired length, then keep following the pattern until the piece is as large as you would like it to be. Single crochet ribbing By crocheting into the back loops (BL) you will create a horizontal ridge that forms into a stretchy ribbed pattern. Ch any number of sts. Row 1: dc in 2nd ch from hook and in every remaining ch across. Row 2: ch 1, turn, dc in BL of each st across. Rep Row 2 for pattern. 6 7 4 5 2 3 1 150 Simple Steps to Crochet
