Traditionally, it was always an integral part of seating across all realms of Indian architecture. Urbanization and subsequent shortage of space resulted in the jhula giving way to more compact furniture. We at studio TAB always try to introduce the jhula in its pure form or an interpretation of it based on the conceptual planning of the project. The jhula adds character, flair and a distinct sense of home within the given space. It is functional as much as it is aesthetic. It is a piece of furniture that encapsulates multi-fold functions - be it leisure, lounging, reading or a siesta.” The Ideal Home and Garden December 2020 | 51

We have all grown up with vivid memories of spending our childhood on a swing or listening to our grandmother telling us stories while she sits on her swing like it was her throne. This piece we made for the open house comes from a similar thought. The children of the house loved spending time with the grandmother, huddling around her and playing with her. The swing was just apt in her room, where she could entertain her grand-kids while swaying away.” “Swings are seating options often seen in Gujarati households. Their unique design transforms space into a fun retreat by bringing back childhood memories leaving us nostalgic. Swinging has proven to be beneficial for health as it enhances sensory integration. Nowadays professional stress is commonly found in people, even after returning to their homes they are still occupied with work stress while swinging helps them to relieve stress. Generally, we prefer having a swing with a common sitting. Every swing we design is considered as an element of space that is intricately detailed base for the concept of the home. Volumes of voids and devoid are fused together with various veneers. Design evolves around the emotional core - a space which invites the user to feel at home and spend some quality time being in the common area with other family members. It stands as a strong and prominent element of culture in functional terms for ages.”

It’s need to be filled with love, care and your personal touch to make the space your own. For me every blank wall of my home is a blank canvas which I filled with the colours of my imagination. In this painting I used stencils from Berger Paints to make those flying birds. Just choose the colours and your patterns, and then fix the stencil with masking tape and just paint over it. Let the paint dry fully before carefully taking out the stencil and your wall painting is ready. Use this to bring life and positive vibes to your home with colours and paintings,” says Shilpi Ghosh. And what else can cheer up your surroundings more than adding plants to it. The idea was to utilise the vertical space so I got these shelves from my own brand Furniblooms and added plants, which are just perfect for small spaces. With a built-up area of nearly 10,000 sqft, a design program was required to include large living spaces, a master bedroom and two additional bedrooms to accommodate the families of their visiting children, library, kitchen and utility room and other ancillaries along with an organic garden and landscaped outdoors to provide for ample spill-outs. TIHG Special Ace Associates : Location: Anand, Gujarat | Area: 60,000 sqft | Image: Tejas Shah Photography “Drawing inspiration from Balinese architecture to create a resort-like ambiance, the architects have designed a traditional home with sloping roofs and has extensively used wood for the exteriors as well as the interiors. A large plot size provides a plethora of opportunities as well as challenges for any architect. As multiple areas have to be created while maintaining the design sensibility, having a clear vision is imperative for any architect or designer. For this residence, Anand-based architects Ashish Patel and Nikhil Patel of Ace Associates created a resort like structure that allowed its exteriors to seamlessly flow into the interiors. Binding the outdoors with the indoors was the main requirement of the owners. The residence is linearly spread with a garden in the middle that acts as the focal point. A cobbled driveway with an asymmetical garden in the center, leads to the 18,000 sqft residence that is defined by its traditional sloping roofs. The porch with its Balinese lions on either side marks the entry to the house. Walkways on either side of this porch lead to the interiors of the house.” 60 |December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden

The approach on the north side of the plot meant that any siting of the built form would obstruct the view of the surrounding. The house needs to respond to the site and importantly not be obstructive in its manifestation but dissolve into the terrain. The house and its program have been treated like a play of ‘jenga’ blocks. Two volumes sit over each other. The shift of one volume further creates the necessary design and functional requirements that need to be accommodated. Since the south façade of the built form faces the south but also the brunt of weather, it was necessary for this volume to ‘shift’ outward and sideways to create the necessary overhang for protection for weather. The ‘Shift’ House, is an existential and displaced geometry set in the surrounding with a minimal barefaced transparent experience.” The Ideal Home and Garden December 2020 | 61

The owner is an avid bird lover and on reaching the site, we were welcomed by birds belting out their melodious chirps and beautiful incantations. This sparked as a basic concept for the design. And thus, the name ‘kalrav’ means chirping of birds was given. The aim was to create a raw and organic environment for our clients to relax and be close to nature. The entrance is done using traditionally carved door and theme wall with mud plaster. This brought a sense of belonging and humbleness on arrival. Along with viewing the complete drama of the site, the hanging deck is where you can sit and enjoy the entire waterscape. Apart from this, an enclosed area for servants and various maintenance services is provided. The rest of the area is kept open and green. The core part of the design are the tiered waterscapes, so as to attract more birds. ‘Kalrav’ is a paradise not only for our clients but also birds, insects and many other living creatures aiming to regenerate a perfectly balanced ecosystem. The absolute connection with the natural elements like air, sky, water and earth makes one want to come here again.” 62 |December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden

Amardeep Gulri of Deco-Arte was excited when approached with the prospect of transforming this space in accordance with a brief that gave room for creativity to truly flourish. Mukul Gupta, a commercial pilot and the owner of this 3200 sqft home in Faridabad, wanted aviation elements along with the rustic to be melded into the interiors of his home. Amardeep thus reveals, “we planned to create a space where the eye travels quickly from nook to nook, creating the sensation of flying and travel.” And this feat is achieved by drawing on artistically envisioned graffiti walls and furniture accents that stand out beautifully. A simplicity and warmth binds together thematically all the various spaces of this charming apartment. But it is the rustic décor, carefully integrated with delicate precision, that defines the interiors. It plays a significant role in weaving together the design vision that this apartment captures. From material choices, to the chosen warm tone colour scheme and the interior enhancing accent pieces, each element comes together to create a refreshing version of rustic charm that has seamlessly found home within a contemporary space. Natural materials dominate the aesthetics of the space, with wooden beams along with stone and clay inflections. These infuse the space with natural warmth which soothes when combined with comfortable furniture choices. Pushing the design further Amardeep points out, “while wooden rafters for ceiling are certainly a good start, it was also worth considering original framing, flooring and bricks.” And the awe-inspiring results convey the importance of such detailed considerations. Key among these was the seamless integration of quirky and distinct elements that are meaningful reminder of Mukul’s love for travel and aviation. Moving from one space to the other, propellers, vintage plane models and world maps greet us in charming ways. However, it is not just in décor additions where the client’s needs have been beautifully met. Amardeep reveals that “the client wanted to block their open kitchen and also wanted to have additional storage for their crockery.” After much careful thought, the decision was taken to introduce a crockery unit to this space, which effectively blocks the kitchen space, while simultaneously also providing additional storage. The space savvy designing remedy, addresses both the expressed need for separation, as well as for additional storage, thus serving both function and aesthetics. As one walks from one space to another in this striking abode, the power of carefully and creatively placed graffiti becomes truly evident. Explaining his reasons for utilizing graffiti here, Amardeep states, “creative, captivating and always popular, graffiti has the power to add innovative appeal to the home.” The seamless integration of this element brings in a distinct character that distinguishes this home from others, while still fulfilling the need for the home to be a healing sanctuary. Garden Gardening Words: Vinayak Garg If WInter comes, can sprInG be far behInd? Well, this winter season might be a fresh challenge for most of our young amateur gardeners as most of them started gardening in response to the depleting state of the pandemic. And incredibly, many are still continuing with their green pursuits as it become a new-found hobby that they can adhere to. The curb appeal of the cold season is enhanced by pretty Petunias and Gerberas. Plant parents await this season to explore the winter blooms extravagantly in their landscape. As the weather cools, it’s time to make your garden ready for the winter. It may look like not much is happening in your backyard as you watch your plants drop their colorful foliage and slow their growth as they prepare to go dormant. However, there’s a lot going on under the soil especially with the new divisions of perennials, recently transplanted trees and shrubs, and hardy spring bulbs, which require new roots to anchor themselves. Also, there is a full array of winter plants you can put your hands on to further explore their beauty. While nature has its own unique ways of adjusting to the cold months, we rounded up the top five activities you can perform to beautify your garden in winter. 78 | December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden
