Suede Smarts Suede jackets and boots are beautiful when new, but winter weather can make them look dingy in no time. Keeping suede supple and spot-free is easy if you know what to do. Here are my top tips: Before wearing: Protect it from water and stains with a suede-safe spray, like Kiwi Suede and Nubuck Waterproofer. Apply a light, even coat and allow it to dry, then reapply. If it gets wet: Blot it — don’t rub it — with a towel, and stuff shoes or jacket sleeves and pockets with paper towels. Allow items to dry overnight in a well-ventilated area away from heat. Once dry, brush lightly to restore the surface. For other stains: Blot and sprinkle on baking soda to help absorb the stain. Brush when dry. Buff out dry stains or re-fluff a matted nap with a gentle pass of an emery board in one direction. 4 8 GH JAN/FEB 2021

Norwegian researchers Magnhild Nicolaisen and Kirsten Thorsen discerned that these were the ages filled with the most regret, with memories of a more carefree life still fresh in people’s minds. Nicolaisen also points to the “sandwich squeeze,” when many women in their 40s and 50s are caring for both children and elderly parents. She notes that having limited time to just hang out with friends and have fun leads to disappointment and, ultimately, loneliness. Additionally, though we enjoy our own achievements and our children’s milestones as we move through our 40s, things tend to change then. Parents die, couples divorce, children move away, people lose their jobs — and we may be too busy to properly attend to the emotional fallout. Vulnerability to loneliness peaks in

What is fill power, and why does it matter? —CYNTHIA P. A: This term applies to down insulation and is labeled on products like coats, comforters and sleeping bags. In technical terms, it tells you the volume of down in cubic inches per ounce. In real life, it lets you know how warm and cozy the garment will feel. A higher number means the down takes up more space, so more air gets trapped, offering better insulation. Fill power can range from 300 to 900, and anything over 550 is considered warm. Keep in mind that it’s not the same thing as fill weight, which is how much down is used. For the warmest garment, look for a high fill power and a heavy fill weight. 8 4 GH JAN/FEB 2021 See more top-tested picks at goodhousekeeping.com/wintercoats.

WHAT ARE THE BEST FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS? A. I get this question a lot, especially now that we’re all cooking at home more often. I like glass containers with straight edges (easy to stack and store) and tight-fitting lids, like the new Rubbermaid Brilliance Glass line. Unlike some plastic, glass holds its shape, is long-lasting and won’t discolor. Plus, you can safely put it in the oven or the microwave for reheating. But before you pick a set, think about how you’ll use it. Do you tend to store single portions or large amounts of leftovers? Will you take it on the go as well? Glass containers can be a little heavy and can break, so if you often carry food with you, consider BPA-free plastic ones with clip-on lids. 86 GH JAN/FEB 2021
