Mackenzie Ventrello - Junior Queen Hello! My name is Mackenzie Ventrello and I am extremely honored to serve my first Royalty title as the 2016 Garfield County Fair & Rodeo Junior Queen. I am 16 years old and I attend Rifle High School as a junior. I live in Rifle with my father Loren Woody and my mother Diane Ventrello. They have done so much for me and I am blessed to have them as my parents. I have lived in Rifle and Garfield County my entire life. I enjoy spending time outdoors with my friends and family. I also love being with my horse, Boss. He is my pride and joy and came to me 8 months ago from family friends. I have been running barrels with him and goat tying in rodeos throughout Colorado. I plan to continue through next spring and summer. I would also love to start roping with him because he is an awesome horse and can do anything. When I’m not on Boss you can find me on the court playing volleyball and basketball. I also spend a lot of time working with my 4-H animals. I have been in 4-H for 9 years showing market goats and lambs. This is my third year breeding lambs and goats. Breeding and raising animals teaches incredible responsibility and how to step up and be a leader when it’s needed.I have a dream of becoming a nutritionist for animals and an equine veterinarian. I plan on attending college in thefall of 2017 to make that dream a reality.I hope to see y’all around the community, and at the Garfield County Fair & Rodeo 2016! God bless! 7 Riley Triebel - Princess Hello, My name is Riley Triebel, I am very grateful to have the opportunity to serve as Garfield County Fair & Rodeo Royalty. I am honored to serve as the 2016 Garfield County Fair Princess. I was born 11 years ago at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado where I still live today. I have two younger brothers, Luke and Landon, who enjoy going with me to the 4J Arena in New Castle where I ride. I have been riding horses for about 3 years and my current trainer is Lisa Fetchik. I have always loved horses my whole life, pretend and real ones. I have spent most of my time this past year participating in 4-H. My most exciting competition was Garfield County Fair Horse Show where I won Grand Champion for my age group. I have fallen in love with participating in Gymkhanas, doing poles, barrels, keyhole and other fun games on a horse. Competing in Round Robin at this year’s fair was a great time with all the different animals I had the privilege to meet and show. I think cattle were my favorite. I am excited to start my reign as Garfield County Princess with a newhorse named “Dude”. He is a beautiful buckskin and we are looking forward to meeting new people, and participatingin upcoming fairs, rodeos and visiting folks at community events throughout Colorado. They were instrumental in teaching young 4-H members basicthrough advanced horsemanship skills in both 4-H and AQHA disciplines. With a growing need for additional livestock projects for their sons, Mike and Craig, Alvin and Linda then started the Rifle Ag 4-H Club which is still active today. During their time as leaders of Rifle Ag, the club membership grew to more than 75 members. Their leadership continued for more than 25 years, with active roles in the Livestock Steering Committee and the Garfield CountyFair. Alvin was a “ringman” for the livestock auction, which he continued even after he retired as a leader.Richard Joseph “Joe” HansenJoe loved participating in rodeo competitions especially in Rifle, Aspen andMeeker. In 1952, he was a champion roper. Interest in the sport of rodeo ledto his being a member of the Garfield County Fair Board for ten years, andthe Senior Pro Rodeo Association for several years. Joe was one of three menhonored by that group in 1993. He was again honored on August 3, the nightof his death, at the 2015 Garfield County Fair Family Rodeo, when ChanceLucchesi (Joe’s grand-nephew) and his partner asked the announcer to tellthe audience that they were dedicating their love of the sport of rodeo to Joe.Joe also belonged to the Colorado and Holy Cross Cattlemen’s Associations. His sons Glenn and Alvin were in 4-H and FFA and Joe was also a leader and advisor. Barry began running the family ranch at the age of 14 andspent the remainder of his life doing what he loved, irrigating crops, movingcattle to the summer range, raising calves and gathering them in the fall. Even though he was busy with ranch work he found time to contribute to the 4-H program by volunteering as a leader of the Mamm Creek Round-up 4-H club for many years. One of the highlights was a fundraiser at Silt HeyDays selling homemade root beer. He found great joy in helping the children learn, grow and earn moneyfor themselves through hard work. He loved his community and strived to keep it a special place to live. His motto: “Just do the best ya’ can.” Bud SmithR.W. “Bud” Smith rode off on his next trail ride at 90 years of age. 24 CONCERT - CHRIS JANSON This year’s opening act, Chris Janson, will start the concert night off with a bang! Janson received iHeartRadio’s Music Award for Country Song of the Year in 2015, and was also recently nominated for two Academy of Country Music Awards, including Single Record of the Year, Buy Me a Boat, and New Male Vocalist of the Year. Chris Janson has never doubted who he is. He’s a devoted husband, a passionate father, a hit songwriter, a wildly entertaining performer and, now, a Number One country artist. All those elements influence Buy Me a Boat, his debut solo album. Janson does the hard work and showmanship in his own style, and insists on writing his own songs. He’s a songwriter first and foremost, penning hits for other artists, most notably Tim McGraw’s Top 10 Truck Yeah. 36THE NEW LADIES OF THE FAIRIt used to be that girls had one oftwo roles at the fair. Girls coulddress up and look nice for the socialevent, or they could roll up theirsleeves and handle livestock. Butthose lines are blurring and a newgeneration of do-it-all girls is takingover. Landyn (10), Loghan (14), andLayne (15) Teter are just those girls. All of the sisters started to competeat the fair by age 8 or 9. But it’snot what you would normallythink. In addition to showinglivestock, Layne was awardedReserve Grand Champion for hermodeling at the State Fashionreview last year. Her category wasBuymanship, an area that helpsteach youth about budgeting, clothing, patterns, and much more.Landyn has followed in her oldersister’s fashionable footsteps bycompeting in the Decorate Your Duds category. Yet, she also shows and breeds rabbits. Loghan enjoys baking, canning, steers, and horses. She finds enjoyment in the general categories but shares, “working with animalsteaches us a responsibility that you can’t learn with a goldfish.”This is the new generation of crossover youth: they have a strong interest in the old traditions of western Colorado, but also seek contemporary hobbies. LIVESTOCK & LEADERSHIPIf you were to meet the Jenkins boys from six years ago,you might not even realize they are the same kids. “Wewere really shy growing up” shares 18-year-old Daniel. He and his brothers Joe (13), Donald (14), and Tim(15) have grown and changed more than anyone couldhave imagined in such a short time. And they say it's allbecause of the Garfield County Fair & Rodeo and 4-H.Poultry is a staple in the Jenkins household. Growingup with chickens, all of the boys have been involved inPoultry nearly every year. Don is hoping to design his ownbreed while Daniel took fifteen birds to fair one year withthe dreams of winning. Which he did.But the Jenkins boys’ involvement with the fair and 4-Hdoesn’t stop with livestock. Speech, robotics, rocketry, woodworking, and County Council are just a few of theother areas they excel in. Daniel, Tim, and Don are all These former shy guys are now on the path to becomingactive members of the County Council, an area of 4-H leaders in our community. Because of the skills theythat teaches youth about government, public speaking, learned competing at the fair and being involved in 4-H,and leadership. In fact, an annual leadership project is these four young gentlemen are more prepared to takemandatory in the program. on the exciting world ahead of them.
