E xEtqruaisotrriedninneaire By Cindy Reich South Africa is a beautiful country. A bountiful country. An unforgiving country. It requires hard work and dedication to succeed in this country. And hard work and dedication is what Francisca Strydom is all about. From her earliest recollection, Francisca was devoted to horses. Growing up on a farm in Makwassie, Francisca rode before she could walk. Any horse was fair game. When she was very young, her father got a palomino Saddlebred cross horse and it is said that Francisca was on the horse day and night. And why not? There was plenty of space to ride and plenty of horses. Any good horseman will tell you that you cannot become a horseman had no formal instruction but learned by doing. unless you have been thrown. Francisca rode the horses on her Francisca and her younger sister, Patricia, would parent’s farm without a saddle and yes, she fell off. A lot! But she start every day riding horses on the farm on any also learned to develop an excellent seat and sense of balance and harmony given day: Boerperd, Saddlebred, Thoroughbred on the back of a horse that would not have happened with a saddle in the cross, ponies — whatever there was that they way. In fact, Francisca was 18 years old before she got her first saddle!! She could ride. However, they were also responsible for the feeding, mucking out and all of the work Francisca Strydom with another one of her all time favourite horses, that had to be done as well. There was no trainer, *Baywatch V (USA), after collecting yet another set of roses. no formal education — it was all a process of trial and error. Finding out what worked and what didn’t. Spending all day every day, bareback, riding a variety of horses gave Francisca an education far beyond what any riding school could’ve taught. “My father was very strict”, said Francisca, “You have to feed them yourself, learn to ride yourself and do everything yourself”, he instructed me. “Yet, he would then get angry when I was away all day on the back of a horse.” As she grew older, Francisca considered concentrating on hunters and jumpers, but the cost of running in those circles was beyond her. Then, at the age of 16, she borrowed a black horse to compete in an endurance ride. Francisca and “Baby” completed the 30km ride, with Francisca riding the entire ride bareback! It was an early portent of what was to become a passion for Francisca Strydom — Endurance riding! However, we must first go back to a horse show that Francisca attended. She was there to see an Arabian stallion that she had seen a picture of. He was the ethereal white stallion with a high tail flowing out behind him. So although she was in a short skirt at the time, she climbed up on top of him and he promptly threw her in the dirt! Completely undaunted, Francisca admired the spirit of this white stallion and was determined to have an Arabian horse. She had ridden and trained every other type of horse, but never an Arabian. The die had been cast. With her father’s ethic in mind, Francisca started raising money to buy an Arabian horse and at the age of 17, bought Koringkloof Sidi, a registered Arabian stallion. She had to convince her father to travel over a thousand kilometers 6 Strydom Arabian Horse Magazine Vol.10 No.1
to fetch him at the town of Springbok. Koringkloof Sidi and Francisca formed an unbreakable bond, and all it took was a whistle from Francisca to bring him running from whatever part of the farm he was residing. They were inseparable. After a few years, however, he was exported to Namibia. No one knew at the time that the connection with Koringkloof Sidi was far from over. More on that later. From this point on, Francisca was determined to breed and train Arabians. So although she was barely out of high school, she registered her Arabian Stud and breeding program. Her goal? “To breed to ensure the perpetual existence of this amazing breed!” It was obvious that Francisca had a talent with horses, but how to use it in a productive manner? Where Francisca was living in the North-West Province, there was not any sort of organized horse activity. She had thought of going into hunters and jumpers, but the cost was prohibitive and she didn’t have the facility and equipment to do it at the level that she wanted to compete. However, she COULD do endurance riding. All one needed was a good horse and plenty of space. Space was something Francisca had in abundance — and what breed of horse was better at endurance riding than the Arabian horse? As she did with everything in life, Francisca was single- minded in her resolve to become a serious endurance rider. “Endurance is the ultimate test for you and the horse”, says Francisca. “You must both work together in partnership and both horse and rider must be in peak condition”. From that first bareback endurance ride on “Baby”at the age of 16, Francisca has amassed over 10,000 km in the saddle across some of the roughest terrain in the world, gaining National and International titles along the way. One highlight was the African Endurance Championship in Namibia in 2012. This extremely challenging ride, over rocky mountains, shifting red sand dunes, gravel roads and the beach alongside the Atlantic Ocean takes it toll on both horse and rider. Yet Francisca emerged as the overall winner as well as with the coveted “Best Conditioned” (horse) award and “Best of the Best” award. All serious horsemen and women yearn to win the best Condition award, as it validates their care, conditioning and training of their horse throughout the ride. Interestingly, she won this award on her homebred gelding, Baahir Jireh Zuhrah, sired by none other than Koringkloof Sidi! Baahir Jireh Zuhrah deserves his own story, as it is a testament to a “never-give-up attitude” that is not uncommon in Arabian horses. Zuhrah was bottle raised as a foal, as his mother did not have adequate milk for him. As a young stallion he survived a very severe chest injury that should have killed him. Francisca started him on an endurance career in 2007 where he completed three 80km rides. While training in 2008 he injured a tendon so badly that the veterinarians said he would never compete again. However, Francisca’s superb care and conditioning and Zuhrah’s “never-say-die attitude” saw both compete at Fauresmith in 2010 and later that Continued on page 8 Francisca Strydom with one of her all-time favorite companions, *Magic Dream (CAHR) Strydom Arabian Horse Magazine Vol.10 No.1 7

As they were preparing for their first ride in 2011 disaster struck again when Zuhrah’s foot broke through a pipe and cut his foot so seriously that only Francisca’s quick actions to use her coat to create a pressure bandage stopped him from bleeding to death. Again, Francisca used her innate skills as a horsewoman and her knowledge of Zuhrah’s mental state to nurse him through this latest setback. Knowing that Zuhrah lived to work and loved his job, she slowly brought him along so he could do the job he loved to do! A year later, the unconquerable team were back at a ride in Walvis Bay where Zuhrah finished first overall and was awarded “Best Conditioned” and “Best of the Best”! In a sport where the horse and rider must depend on each other in grueling circumstances, the bond that Zuhrah and Francisca had was unmistakable! Each one looked after the other — always! “The biggest obstacle was always keeping Zuhrah from going too hard”, said Francisca. He would die running — he just has a drive that is unbelievable. I couldn’t let him go as hard as he would like and clearly I was able to strike the right balance in as much as he won “Best Conditioned” and “Best of the Best”. Only a consummate horsewoman could possess the innate talent, and ability to execute a carefully crafted plan with absolute precision — in a sport that entirely unpredictable — to achieve the success that Francisca has within the International Endurance Racing community. She has competed in the toughest endurance ride in Africa — the Fauresmith 200km an unbelievable 14 times, winning the lightweight division in 2008 and being the first standard weight woman home in 2014! The Arabian horse was evolved to cross vast distances efficiently — that is what they were bred to do. Francisca Strydom is showing not only Africa, but also the entire world just how good the Arabian is at this job! However, it was perhaps inevitable in her equestrian pursuits that Francisca would be exposed to the show world. For the first time, she sought professional help for her riding form from Johan Pienaar, thinking it would improve her endurance riding. HalterExtraordinary Continued from page 8 “All the farmers do endurance riding in South Africa”, said Francisca with her parents, Tol and Rika Kirsten Strydom, “and I didn’t want to look like that!” At first, it was Top and bottom: Unanimous Champions in halter at the rough, as no one would help her with the exception of Ros Krige and as usual, she more or less had to figure it out for 2013 Scottsdale Show: Francisca and Victoria WP. herself. She started out in the standard performance classes — English Pleasure, Western Pleasure, Hunter under Saddle, etc. Francisca says that how she learned to prepare show horses has helped her in endurance riding. However, Western Pleasure was very difficult for her to get right. “Everything in endurance is fast, fast, fast”, said Francisca. “Western Pleasure is all slow, slow, slow. It was really hard for me to learn to go slow!” She won National Championships in every division in South Africa, so she set her sights for the largest Arabian horse show in the world — Scottsdale, Arizona. In a show where there are over 2100 Arabian horses from around the world, shown in every discipline imaginable, Francisca was a unanimous Champion showing in halter (in-hand) and a finalist in Western Pleasure with Fausto in 2013. Yet again, her own “figure it out” attitude and innate horsemanship put her at the top of the world’s horsemen and women at the largest Arabian horse show in the world! Not content to win Championships in Africa and North America, Francisca showed at the Brazilian National Championships. She had gone to Brazil to source some new bloodlines and ended up showing a borrowed gelding in Western Pleasure where she just missed a Reserve Championship placing 3rd in the Championships. Not bad for a farm girl from South Africa who never had professional training and didn’t get her first saddle until she was 18! It is not only in the saddle that Francisca Strydom has made her mark. Probably her greatest accomplishment is the breeding program she has set up at Strydom Arabian Stud, bringing in horses and genetics from around the world to breed a better Arabian horse. Due to its remote geographic location, Africa has often had to rely on horses for breeding that come from small genetic pool. Francisca has actively traveled around the world — to North America, South America, Europe and the Middle East to source the very finest Arabian horses to build her vision. Therefore, not only has she raised the bar for the quality of Arabian horses being produced in South Africa, other breeders in Africa benefit by using stallions standing at stud at Strydom Stud. Francisca is the very best candidate to found a dynasty of breeding animals, as she requires a horse that is not only beautiful, but is also capable of being a riding animal. Too many breeders do not ride their horses and require no performance quotient in their breeding programs. However, if one looks at the history of the Arabian horse, it is the breeders that demanded performance as well as beauty (Poland and Russia, for example) that bred the very best horses! It is therefore no surprise that Francisca has bred numerous Champions in South Africa: FS 10 Strydom Arabian Horse Magazine Vol.10 No.1

All of her many accomplishments could never have happened without great talent, determination and a loving family! EnduranceExtraordinary When asked now, what it was about the Arabian horse, specifically, that captured her heart so many years ago, Francisca replied, ““They bond with you like no other animal, they’re incredibly intelligent and caring, they make a difference in your life and they’ve meant so very much to me then, and consequently throughout my life. You can see it in their eyes: the love, intelligence, the wish to please, the will to live and enjoy life” For everything the Arabian horse has given to Francisca Strydom, she has given back—many times over. Gazing at the farm where the stallions are hanging their heads out of their back windows, supervising the mares grazing the fields, one will see young foals capering about their mothers, a young woman trainer working with a rider in the arena, a groom giving a horse a well-deserved bath after a training session… a small paradise of world-class Arabian horses. All from a small girl in South Africa who was in love with horses who would work very, very hard—and never give up. ZuhrahThe Amazing by Dr Paul van Dam Bred and owned by Francisca Strydom, Baahir-Jireh Zuhrah started his life on 14 May 2002 in Wolmaransstad, a small town in the North-West Province, where the average temperatures in May range from a low of 3°C to a high of 22°C. Soon after his birth, the winter started, with temperatures dropping to lows below zero and highs around 18°C. Probably not the ideal time for a foal to start his life. On top of this, his dam did not produce milk and the colt was removed from his dam soon after birth. It fell on his owner’s mother, Rika Kirsten, to bottle-feed him. Zuhrah, as he was affectionaly known, lived amongst a herd of cattle and could easily have claimed a split personality, having cows for company and a human being as surrogate dam. But this remarkable horse developed a strong-willed personality and became a fighter, a survivor, believing in himself, probably seeing himself as a mighty Arabian stallion, not knowing the limits of his being. Not only did he posess the ideal personality for an endurance horse, but also a personality that helped him overcome the accidents that he was destined to be involved in. He was aptly named “Zuhrah”, Arabic for “Brilliance” or “Brightness” (and the name used by the Indonesians for the evening star, Venus). The stud name, from Hebrew words, can be translated as “To provide brilliant (horses)” (Baahir – dazzling, brilliant, Jireh – to provide, to foresee). In many ways prophetic! RRem-Talheriknaeble of the Strydom Stud As a member of as one of the Arabian breed’s most prestigious broodmare bands, *Ricochet V (USA) has emerged as a broodmatron par excellence. A multiple National Champion in both halter and performance, *RicochetV (USA) has had a profound influence on the breeding program of the Strydom Stud and, indeed, the Arabian breed in South Africa. This classic and exotic mare of exceptional femininity, elegance and athleticism, has created the renowned Royal bloodline of the Strydom Stud: the celebrated and remarkable R-line. Very few mares are blessed with extreme qualities and talents in the show ring as well as being a consistent producer of exceptional foals. This convergence of greatness in both phenotype and genotype defines the legacy of *Ricochet V (USA). Sired by Jullyen El Jamaal out of Ravvens Skylark, she was bred by the legendary Sheila Varian and imported from the USA by Strydom Arabian Stud as a three year-old. As soon as her first foal was born it became evident that she would become an outstanding producer. The promise shown by beautiful babies such as FS Rosalinda, FS Raconteur, FS Ruqayyah, FS Royal Silk and FS Ruby proved justified as they proceeded to rapidly collect championship titles in the show ring. Now firmly established, the Royal R-line of the Strydom Stud will certainly continue to magnify the legacy of one of the greatest Arabian mares to grace African shores. Eternal Dream; Enduring Magic This article appeared in the Canadian Arabian Horse Magazine, Official Publication of the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry, August 2014 Of all of the stallions bred on Canadian soil, Magic Dream has to be one of the most influential sires this country has ever produced. A U.S. and Canadian National Top Ten, Scottsdale Champion and sire & grandsire of numerous National and Scottsdale Champions, Magic Dream has left his mark in the history books. In 2008, he topped the CAHR’s list of Canadian stallions with the most registered progeny, eclipsing the immortal Dalul. His foals have gone on to fantastic success in the show ring and their importance is well recognized in breeding programs around the world. That, and the good fortune of having a great mare. Bred by Jo-Anne Campone, a small breeder from British Columbia, Magic Dream was the product of an extremely exacting selection process. It was Jo-Anne’s unwillingness to settle for anything other than her ideal that led to his creation. Jo-Anne’s love of the Arabian developed as a young girl, in the pages of King of the Wind & The Black Stallion. It was a love she never outgrew. In 1983, she would take the first step towards her lifelong dream with the purchase of the purebred mare, Myrilinan Acledo. A beautiful Gai- Adventure daughter, she had the classic Gainey type with enormous black eyes and the sweetest disposition. More importantly, she had just been bred to Aristo Kossak.“After seeing several of Kossak’s foals, I was very impressed with the consistency he put on all of them,” states Jo-Anne. This, paired with the fact that Aristo Kossak had been a Canadian Reserve National Champion Futurity Stallion and U.S. National Top Ten Informal Combination, appealed to Jo-Anne and convinced her he was a worthy choice as a stallion. On July 14, 1984, The Dreamspinner was born. “I can’t begin to explain what she has meant to me both as a broodmare and a friend,”says Jo-Anne. The following year, Jo-Anne saw and fell in love with a young stallion named Ali Jamaal. He was the epitome of type and had just been named 1985 U.S. National Champion Futurity Stallion. She decided he would be the perfect match for her mare, but before she was old enough to breed, Ali Jamaal was sold to Brazil. “I continued to search for an alternative stallion, Everlasting Magic! *Magic Dream (CAHR) was crowned Gauteng Supreme Champion Stallion at the age of 22. The Dreamspinner was bred once more and on June 8, 1992 the colt Jo-Anne had originally hoped for was born. From the moment he was born she knew he was ‘magic’. “His enormous eyes and those tippy ears, his overall presence made me think he was special,” Jo-Anne beams. She was certainly not alone in her opinion of the youngster. His first mare was booked to him at 3 days old – the result of that breeding was GF Forever Magic+, a multi-Champion regional stallion. A repeat breeding produced GF Simply Magic, also a Regional Champion and the dam of RD Fabreanna (x Falcon BHF), who was bred by Murray and Shirley Popplewell of RaeDawn Arabians. RD Fabreanna was the first Canadian-bred filly to be named 2007 U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly. Greg Knowles came out to see the dark bay colt when he was five months old and saw the potential that Magic Dream had. He tried to convince Jo- Anne to sell, but she wouldn’t hear of it. Finally, when Magic was in his two-year- old year, Jo-Anne agreed to syndicate him and the Magic Partnership was formed. By the time Magic Dream was three, his first crop of ten foals had arrived. “We were all thrilled at how prepotent he was,” says Jo-Anne. Whether the foal was out of a Spanish, Polish, Egyptian or domestic-bred mare, the foals all had the “magic” look. Five of these foals made the trip to Scottsdale as yearlings and in huge classes (this being before halter classes were divided into age groups), both colts and all three fillies made their qualifying cuts. Of those, all but one of the fillies ended up in the Top 10. It was a real boon for Knowles’ Arabian Expressions – from Strydom Arabian Horse Magazine Vol.10 No.1 21

In a dehydrated horse (and all horses are dehydrated to some extent after completion of an Strydom Arabian Horse Magazine Vol.10 No.1 25 endurance ride), this will further exacerbate the dehydration and could even be the last straw to break the proverbial camel’s back. This probably is one of the factors that cause a horse that seems to be “OK” after a ride to crash two to three hours later. It is advisable to rather give the horse some time to rehydrate before providing it with dry feed. At the very least, dunk his hay in water and provide it to him in a bucket or trough (not a hay-net or similar, from which the water will merely drip to the ground), helping him to ingest at least some water with the hay. In closing, something that has been said often before. Electrolytes lost in sweat are chloride, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Electrolyte supplements should therefore contain: • Only these key ingredients in the right proportions. • Some sugar (sucrose, the same you add to your coffee) and flavouring agents to make the mix a bit more palatable. • Some dextrose to aid absorption from the gut. • Sometimes there will be low levels of silicon dioxide in the mix; this is added to absorb moisture and prevent the mix from going all lumpy. The final take home message? You cannot successfully participate in endurance riding without the use of a high quality, balanced electrolyte supplement!
